In Between, TBW 3.16x, Sanctuary Earth

Chris Williams was wide awake at 5 a.m., having tossed and turned in his bed. He had returned from California to his Washington D. C. apartment just a few hours before and was expected to meet with his CIA boss at 8 a.m. While he was technically a shared employee of the CIA, he had actually been planted by the CIA inside the OSI to find any agency duplicity the CIA could exploit. He knew his boss wanted to merge the OSI into the “Company.” When he had started out with his assignment he was focused to find ways to do so—the Director had promised him a big promotion. Now after spending several months inside the OSI, he was conflicted.

He and Dr. Wells had just returned on a transport plane from Los Angeles. They had brought the artifacts and specimens they had gathered from under the old Fort, along with the satellite that had lost its orbit due to an alien catching a ride. They also had found Jaime's depleted bionic battery pack. The scientist wanted to further his study of the items for alien “footprints” in his D.C. lab. The doctor explained to Chris the advances in DNA, light imprint detection, and other methods of study.

He had bonded with the doctor and felt honored that Oscar had let him tag after him. The man was a genius of many disciplines. He had numerous lifetimes of knowledge compressed inside his head. He recognized the leadership of Oscar by permitting the doctor free reign to follow wherever his interests took him. Amazingly, the doctor also was tuned into the D.C. political scene. He, as a hardened Company operative, had yet to detect the sources the doctor held. The doctor had talked with him on the plane and given him some seeded advice. He knew the man recognized Chris' CIA objective! He respected the man and did not discount it at hand.

He was pleasantly surprised to discover he liked and admired Mr. Goldman too. He learned the unassuming and very effective Director had several advanced degrees. He surrounded himself with loyal and talented people, giving them the authority and responsibility to execute their jobs. In turn they knew he stood behind them. He was like a gruff, favored uncle to those employees that had the fortune of directly dealing with him. They provided him their loyalty and dedication in exchange. He should never to be underestimated. Character weaknesses were quickly detected and swiftly handled. He knew Oscar had Mark Russell as his right hand man protecting him with the endless bureaucratic paperwork; but he had yet to detect who his left hand man might be (both Steve Austin and Rudy Wells).

He needed to pinch himself with the alien adventures that had dropped into his lap—let alone learning the OSI’s secret of bionic technology. He had seen “Part Numbers” for other bionic assets when Dr. Sarah Wiser had left a computer program open. Rudy’s assistant, Lynda Wilson, saw him. With no apologies, she swiftly shut the computer program down, just as he was posed to open the files. She was terse in her admonishment that he needed Dr. Wells’ authorization, and he had been treated with a New England chill from her ever since. He admired her loyalty and respect for Jaime and Dr. Wells and the OSI—something rarely seen at the CIA.

The true reason he could not sleep was Jaime had become furious with him when she had learned from Rudy that he had revealed the secret of the aliens underneath the old Fort to Oscar and Rudy. If he had not witnessed the events at the Fort himself, he would never have believed it--or the alien catching a lift inside the satellite. Yet Oscar immediately believed her; followed by Dr. Wells. The doctor then proved the experience--as far as he could. He had taken things from her house including a destroyed macrame plant hangar to carbon test.

Unfortunately he and Rudy left before he had patched it up with Jaime.

He did not understand her. On the flight back, after being coaxed by Rudy, he began to recognize her point of view. She had pledged to the alien to stay silent and her word meant everything to her. Oscar had wisely not squelched her code of ethics--he trusted her assessment--he also knew she would have broken her silence if she thought it was necessary. Rudy in his talk also revealed, without doing so, that this was not her first alien encounter. He now realized he had tromped on her honor (but he still had no idea why this was important to her.) Rudy did convince him he should have first talked with her--before he told their superiors.

Jaime! She was probably off, God knows where! And here I am in D.C. I have never felt this way--like part of me is missing. She sucked the air out of him. Could he expose the existence of this woman when he wanted to spend the rest of his life in her presence? “No!” He startled himself with his outburst.

Snap out of it, Chris! This is your big chance! I can’t. Okay let’s explore this as a trained analyst. The people I have met at OSI are people I would want to handle alien life forms and protect the scientific discoveries and develop new technologies. The CIA would never fathom alien life forms—nor would they put any money toward that end. They’d never get the purpose of scientific exploration—other than to benefit the spy craft. What about the other bionic “parts”? There could be an army of them for all he knew--Well--back off Chris--I only saw five files on Dr. Wiser's computer screen. I can’t stay silent about that—or can I? If they are anything like Jaime, they would be effective and should be kept secret. But are they? Knowing Oscar as I now do, I believe he would minimize someone that was mentally defective. Would it be okay to stay "silent" while Oscar's in charge?

Jaime! What a sensitive woman! I cannot fathom being unable to touch or feel my arm and legs! What must it be like for her? Chills swept over him. No wonder she can be a bit prickly at times! It’s obvious she has supportive people around her that love her—including Oscar and Rudy and Lynda. I hope they were there when she was made that way. She shuts me down whenever I prod her about being made bionic. It's as if she has shut that door on her mind. I want to be the one to help her heal. Chris, focus! Okay so how am I going to handle the meeting with the CIA Director?

Fully awake, Chris rose to put on some coffee. He needed to come up with a plan ASAP.

Note to Readers: I never liked the character of Chris Williams; but I wanted to ponder the redeeming qualities Jaime might have seen. I hope you enjoy this perspective.

In "The Antidote" Chris flashed his ID at the Georgia base and he had double ID--a card for the CIA and OSI. Steve Austin also had dual identification cards for NASA and OSI.

Yes, I like it a lot, it's very well done (as all your "in between" stories).

I really enjoyed this look at Chris - at his mindset, his feelings especialy what he was doing there. Fascinating! He has, for the most part, accomplished what he was sent there to do but if he tell's the Company's director everything, he will lose anychance he might have with Jaime. I think I'm nearly as conflicted as he is, on what would be the 'right' thing to do!

Well done - and I'll be watching eagerly for more!

Thanks all for taking the time to add feedback. RudyWells I do plan to continue this. I started in the middle of Season 3--so many more plot holes to fill in after Kenny J left--but plan to go back and do the whole series. Thanks to the Betsy of the BionicBlonde who told me Season 3 was a good place to start! Again, thanks all!
