In honor of Richard Anderson and his legacy, I am putting up three chapters from my second book, temporarily titled "Mlidlife. Richard, I never met you but I enjoyed your work, your book, and your life example. You were Oscar! And so much more. RIP.

Chapter Twenty

Two Days Before Thanksgiving

Steve piloted a small plane from Washington D.C. to the Grand Tetons, Wyoming. Jaime was beside him and the two were enjoying the cockpit view while catching up with each other. They had both run themselves a bit ragged since returning to Washington D.C.

The complete Family would not get together until Christmas this year. The family members who had other “birth” families would be spending time with those families this Thanksgiving. The remaining family members often gathered in smaller groups spread out over the country. This time Steve and Jaime were headed to the Grand Tetons, in Wyoming, to host some weddings.

Once Steve had taxied to a small hangar at the Jackson Hole Airport, a van advertising a private ranch on its side showed up followed by a SUV from a rental car company. They were greeted by the ranch caretakers, Mr. and Mrs. Holyfield, as they de-boarded the plane. Jaime took off in the van with Mrs. Holyfield, as previously planned. Oscar, through one of his numerous connections, had arranged the rental of cabins near Moose, Wyoming, at this time of year when the park and private lodging inside the Grand Tetons Park were closed to visitors.

While Steve did the post-flight check and spoke with the mechanic, Mr. Holyfield emptied the plane of their luggage, packing it in the SUV. Steve and Mr. Holyfield, upon seeing the things Jaime had packed overwhelmed the vehicle, decided to drop off the items at the ranch then return to Jackson Hole to rent the skis and snowshoes the group would later need. They returned on their second trip to the cabin to find Mrs. Holyfield and Jaime unpacking the ranch’s van of groceries and flowers and all types of “frilly” wedding things. Steve sneezed from the flowers and they all laughed. Taking that as a cue, Mr. Holyfield led Steve outdoors to show him the other two cabins they would be using as well as the snowmobiles and fire wood piles.

The men returned and the Holyfield’s departed leaving Jaime and Steve to finish stowing the items. Jaime left to put the flowers in an empty cabin for the night. She returned to find Steve had “bionic” straightened the room and plated Mrs. Holyfield’s gift of chili and cornbread. The couple ate, without words, then retired to a comfortable leather sofa in front of the fireplace and draped a quilt over them. Exhausted from the pace they had been leading, they quickly fell asleep waking later to find their way to a bedroom, after the fire had banked itself.

Such a peaceful, idyllic setting; perfect for hosting weddings! And your dedication to Richard was very touching. I can't wait to read more!
