Do not copy or disseminate without the written approval of Cherri Poe of cherri@cpoego.com Chapter Twenty-One _____ A pounding on the door early the next morning led them in a scramble to unpack their robes. Steve opened the door to the Holyfield’s and another couple. Mrs. Holyfield, seeing their state, quickly poured out as she barged in, “Sorry! We should have called ahead but we only have Oscar’s cell number. I have brought cinnamon rolls and my egg dish. Oh! This is the rector and his wife, Pastor Clinton and Marjorie.” Steve graciously retrieved the dishes Mrs. Holyfield held, passing them to Jaime. He then took the couple’s coats while they pulled off their snow boots. He restrained himself from bionically building a fire in the fireplace. Mrs. Holyfield continued, “Jaime, go ahead and get dressed. I do apologize. As you know our children are coming in at noon and based upon Steve’s sneezes last night I thought Marjorie and I could help you arrange the flowers and decorations at the chapel before our children arrive. Go, get dressed. I know the way around this kitchen’s pots and pans better than you do and will get some coffee started.” Her actions reminded Jaime of Steve’s mom dropping randomly in on her and she quickly shifted and said, welcomingly, “Great idea! Give me just a minute.” She returned to the bedroom they had claimed; with Steve joining her shortly thereafter. They bionic dressed, warmly, for the day. It was several degrees below zero outside. Their bionics still did not work well in cold—remaining to be their personal form of “kryptonite.” The three couples relaxed over Mrs. Holyfield’s tasty breakfast. Jaime was truly appreciative of this kindness and her thought of helping to decorate the chapel a day early. With things being so remote and businesses geared to Thanksgiving, they had to accept the florist order the day before. The group took off for the chapel after breakfast. The bionic couple stood in awe inside The Chapel of the Transfiguration. While they had heard about it, and seen photos, nothing could have prepared the couple for the beauty of the Teton’s Cathedral peaks displayed through the large window above the altar with the reflective cross, nor the view from outside. The two couples with them, never not dazzled by the chapel, provided Jaime and Steve time to absorb it. After a bit, the ladies began to set about the festive Christmas Reds and Greens, while the men checked out the bridal cabin and ensured the plumbing and heating were in working order. As they worked, Steve learned the Rector was a good friend of Oscar’s. After finishing bionic snow shoveling (after the couple had left), Steve and Jaime left for the airport to greet the first party flying in from Seattle. Lynda Wilson was the first to appear in baggage claim and they were greeted warmly; followed by Serena Moon and Tim Atwood and Bill Wilson. The couple was a bit surprised to see Serena had allowed her hair to return to its natural brown for the occasion of her marriage to Tim. Jaime also noticed her fingernails were free of audacious colors. Serena was very quiet and Jaime, through their telephone conversations, recognized a somber wedding was very important to her. The couples retrieved their luggage and Tim charmingly carried the box holding Serena’s wedding dress—he had yet to see. Bill Wilson rented another SUV and the Seattle area couples headed off to the cabins while Jaime and Steve left for last minute groceries and then headed to the commuter terminal and waited for the upcoming arrival of the participants from Washington D.C. Soon the plane landed, and with it Oscar Goldman and Dr. Corrine Weston! Due to the threats that come with being Oscar Goldman, only the intended guests and Rector and his wife were to know of Oscar and Cory’s marriage. Oddly, while Jaime and Steve thought they would be the only ones to recognize the unique qualities of Serena and Tim and had a desire to parent the adult orphans, Oscar and Cory and Bill and Lynda had also latched onto them. Oscar and Cory were excited to share their day of union with the young couple. The second group arrived at the cabin to find Pastor Clinton had taken Serena and Tim to a cabin to counsel; while Marjorie was in the kitchen helping Lynda whip up soup and sandwiches. The group eventually hunkered down to a light meal and then the pastor couple left with Oscar and Cory for a private cabin to talk with them about their wedding vows. (Jaime bionic eavesdropped to hear the pastoral couple, even with Oscar, take the act of marriage solemnly and provide sage marriage counseling in the compacted time. While she did not want to listen in on their personal conversation, she listened enough to be very impressed and assured.) Marjorie returned and asked Serena and Tim to join them. Lynda and Jaime used that time to discuss meals and arrangements and do some prep work for Thanksgiving. Bill and Steve inspected and set out snowshoe equipment. The two “old, married” couples were going to stay in the larger two bedroom cabin while the soon-to-be newlyweds would stay in the two smaller cabins. Pastor Clinton and Marjorie left and the group spent the rest of the day snowshoeing. Steve experienced a big rip in his old ski pants and the bionic couple returned early so he could warm his exposed leg. (Jaime supported him a bit when they were out of view of their friends.) The other group trudged back at dusk to wake the bionic couple asleep on the couch in front of the fire. Oscar catered to Steve without appearing to do so. Lynda made a mental note to talk to Rudy about getting the couple updated cold weather suits and other extreme equipment while OSI was still officially intact—she was a realist and recognized the couple could still be asked to do “something” anytime and anywhere. The soon-to-be marrieds, at Serena’s request, stayed in separate cabins for the night. Serena wanted Tim not to see her until the next day at the altar. The other three willingly obliged. After dinner Pastor Clinton came and took the men to his house to give his old friend, Oscar, a bachelor’s party, along with Tim. Marjorie stayed with the women and they had a bridal shower. While their groups were small, a lot of fun and merriment was to be had. Steve texted Jaime when the men were on their way home. It was after midnight so Cory and Serena were tucked into a cabin before they arrived for Serena’s wish. They were soon all snug in their various beds with happy thoughts in their heart. |

I'm thoroughly charmed by the setting here and (of course) riveted upon learning who one of the grooms will be! It's about time (past time, really) for Oscar to grab some well-deserved personal happiness! But... at what cost? One line in particular made me shiver: while OSI was still officially intact. |

With this being set in 2005, in the first novel I had some upset for OSI in relationship to the creation of Homeland Security. Got you wondering, huh! |
