Thanksgiving Day

Chapter Twenty-Two
_____

Lynda and Jaime, without word, rose early Thanksgiving morning. It had begun to snow and the flakes outside the window were beautiful. They took in the view and then hugged tightly relishing the “healthy” time they had together—without Lynda nursing her. Afterward Jaime bionic lit a fire in the fireplace, they set out their plan for the day’s activities. The two women first put a turkey and ham in the oven to roast and then set about making breakfast trays to take to the cabins.

Bill rose next and began to make each person a personalized espresso; Steve packed the espresso and breakfast in a Coleman chest. He then donned his now duct-taped snow clothing and snow shoes and took off to the “bachelors” cabin with the first delivery of breakfast. He found the two men up talking and a bit nervous. After teasing them, he returned and refilled the chest and headed to deliver breakfasts to the “bachelorettes.” The two “girls” asked him a bunch of questions about the bachelors—and Steve grinned and hugged them and left—telling them he’d see them at the altar!

He returned to find the group in the living area. Jaime had already begun to decorate the long log dining table for the Thanksgiving wedding dinner. The couples, after prayer, talked about logistics while eating, a bit hurriedly. They then each set about their individual chores. The Rector and his wife, had on their own, called up the park ranger and called in a favor to have the road plowed between the cabin and chapel, eliminating the need for snowmobiles. Jaime and Lynda had loaded up one of the SUVs and picked up the brides at their cabin. They were greeted at the chapel by the Rector and Marjorie. Pastor Clinton and Marjorie showed the brides the Chapel and gave them the time they needed to enjoy the beauty of God’s nature from the altar window. The scene was surreal that morning.

Meanwhile Jaime and Lynda arranged the dresses in the bridal cabin and dressed quickly so they could assist the brides. Marjorie brought the brides back, just as the nervous bridegrooms, escorted by Bill and Steve, arrived in the other SUV. Clinton joyously greeted his longtime friend and put the grooms at ease while they waited. His wife joined them shortly and retrieved her violin and tuned it quickly. She then began to play “Jesu’ Joy of Man’s Desiring” while her husband arranged the nervous men at the altar. The Chapel doors opened to reveal Jaime and Lynda blocking the brides from the grooms’ view and then marching down the aisle now to Marjorie’s rendition of the wedding march and then standing next to their husbands.

Dr. Cory Weston entered next, stunning, in a beautiful short length dress, with her gorgeous wavy brown hair, perfectly styled to accentuate her pretty face and green eyes, and belying her 60 something age. Jaime had helped her find the dress and it said “wedding” for those that would know—but any pictures taken could pass her off as a guest to Serena and Tim’s wedding. (While Jaime knew she was at peace with that; she was glad Cory had a most beautiful wedding and dress when she married her beloved James.) Jaime’s bionic ear recognized Oscar had stopped breathing. She smiled.

Once Dr. Weston had gracefully walked the aisle to stand next to Oscar, Serena appeared in a stunning dress, who was anything but serene, until her eyes caught Tim’s and she beamed, almost running to his side. They then all pivoted to turn toward the Rector. The sun shined through the altar window, reflecting from the Cross perfectly. A light snowfall gave a foreground to the Cathedral peaks, knocking the breath out of everyone.

Momentarily the prayer uttered by the Rector was lost on Steve and Jaime while they squeezed hands and celebrated being there together. They then turned their hearts into the service and focused their energies on the soon to be marrieds. The bridal couples had determined they would not choose attendants among the large family--except Oscar had been adamant that Steve was his Best Man. Standing next to Oscar, Steve insured there was no ring fumble, as did Bill for Tim. The pastor’s wife had slipped from violinist to camera operator. She knew while the wedding was in secret the couples would regret no pictures and she had successfully performed this role many times. The Rector announced Mr. and Mrs. Goldman and Mr. and Mrs. Atwood and all the couples embraced their spouses and kissed before Bill and Steve gave out a jubilant shout of “Woo Hoo!” This was followed by a round of hugs.

Marjorie continued to take pictures until her husband said “enough” and they signed the documents. She then picked up her violin and began to head out the door while she played Amazing Grace with Steve and Jaime leading a march to the Rector’s SUV conveniently parked just beyond the chapel arch. Pastor Clinton and Marjorie drove the newlyweds back to their home to toast their marriage and palm off a few more tidbits of wisdom to give the others some needed time. Once they were just out of view, Jaime and Lynda headed to the bridal cabin to repack the belongings strung about. Bill and Steve returned to the Chapel to blow out the candles and lock up. Both men sheepishly paused at the altar and took in one last view.

Steve headed to the cabin to help the gals carry stuff. He walked in and the three simultaneously caught each other’s eyes and burst into pent up happy tears. None of them thought they would see the day Oscar Goldman married—and to such a wonderful woman. Bill, waiting in his car, eventually cut off its engine and joined them. He recognized what had happened and quickly joined them in their group hug and shed joy tears too. He knew these friends had a unique bond with Oscar. Eventually, Steve, looking at his wife’s running mascara, quipped, “Honey, you may want to unpack some of that primping stuff.” The group laughed and re-grouped. They quickly grabbed up stuff while Steve texted the Rector to hold the wedding party up a bit.

They drove back to the cabin and changed to warm, festive sweaters (and the gals touched up their makeup). Jaime and Lynda met in the kitchen. Without word they divvied up kitchen duties with Jaime taking on things that she could “bionic” do. Soon they heard “jingle bells” and recognized the married couples had arrived at the Thanksgiving wedding dinner in a horse-drawn carriage driven over back country. (Something Oscar had arranged through the Rector.) The park employee dropped them off and then returned to his family. Pastor Clinton and Marjorie showed up on a snowmobile shortly thereafter—the snow had picked up obliterating the plowed road.

The turkey and ham came out beautifully. They sat down in seats at the log table and each participant felt truly blessed as Pastor Clinton prayed over their feast.

Beautifully done, with such careful attention to detail that I can just feel the rays of sunshine pouring in thru the chapel windows. When your books are published, I hope I can get signed copies so I can say "Oh yes - I knew her when...!"
