After the end of the bionic TV shows, you are a movie producer hired to write a script for a new bionic TV movie. An idea for a romance comes to light for Jaime but with who? Someone suggests Oscar Goldman. You ask yourself why Oscar or why not Oscar? How would you bring them together?

Oscar finds it harder and harder to send Jaime on dangerous missions. He becomes visibly distraught when she appears to be in trouble. When she pulls out of it in one piece and returns to his office for debriefing, her brush with death has rattled her. He takes her hands in his to try and soothe her and she ends up crying on his shoulder. At first, he doesn't know how to react. (We can see the turmoil in his face.) His arms tentatively circle around her, then draw her in. Then their eyes meet and there is a spark - but they quickly pull apart. Too late. They both felt it. The inferno has been ignited.... |

Why not Oscar. It's simple. He and Steve are too close as friends for him to ever hone in on Steve's territory. Yes, he has always had feelings for Jaime, but that doesn't mean he would ever really act on those feelings. Maybe there could be a story where Oscar runs over his feelings for Jaime again and again, but I don't think he would ever really pursue Jaime because he is way too close to both of them to ever come between them. |

I agree that Oscar would feel disloyal to Steve if he persued any romantic relationship with Jaime, especially seeing everything Steve went through. There is also the matter of Oscar being Jaime's boss. For me there is also the problem of the age difference. Don't get me wrong, he was good looking and in shape for a 45-50 year old man (I am in that age group now), but personally I would not be interested in a man more than 20 years my senior (or junior). |

As a side note, I don't think they would be able to get away with having a male boss on TV today calling his female subordinate "Babe", even though Oscar was always respectful. |

You have made some very good points. On the othe other hand, I think the fact that Oscar called Jaime Babe was the female version of him calling Steve Pal. It might have even been a "Richardism," something of an idea for a nickname that Richard came up with on his own that stuck and became as part of the cannon because it was a frendly reference to Jaime that just happened to sound good. Pal and Babe are simply Oscar's friendly terms of affection for both Steve and Jaime.

I agree, it probably is nothing more than an affectionate nick name, as I said Oscar was never anything but respectful. I still feel they wouldn't try that in today's PC climate. |

It's pretty rare for me to have a problem with age. What pulls me to ship a couple is their chemistry and commonalities, for me, it's much more highly dependent upon who the people are as opposed to their age. Yeah, I wouldn't ship say, Lindsay Lohan and George Clooney in anything (mostly because Lohan is just a hot mess), but say, Chris Evans and Sandra Bullock? Definitely. Because they've both got this subdued boy/girl next door down to Earth charm about themselves that I think would do great if they were in show or movie as a couple. I think Jaime and Oscar have this sweet and relaxed chemistry between them that could take them along way, despite the age difference. My argument against Oscar would be Jaime's reactions to Steve, the one that really comes to mind for me is the scene where Steve comes to visit Jaime in the hospital in Kill Oscar. When she sees him, she literally lights up like the sun. The closest I've ever seen her react like that to Oscar was in Fembots in Las Vegas at the end and to me that seemed more like she was just happy that they were all alive moreso than romantic feelings toward Oscar, though at that point Bionic Woman was on NBC and I can see if the writers there would want to run with a Jaime/Oscar romance that episode would have been a good starting point. |

To the credit of LW and RA, though, they did play well off of each other; some major sparks were generated there! I agree that it was Oscar's sense of loyalty to Steve (and his professionalism) that kept him from pursuing a romantic relationship. - - - - - - |

I did not mention chemistry previously because it is a matter of opinion. In my opinion, Jaime and Steve have plenty of chemistry. I liked SMDM, but I truly became a fan when Jaime was introduced (I was a little girl at the time). If I hadn't already become a fan of this couple, Kill Oscar would have convinced me. I agree with Inanna about how Jaime lit up when she saw Steve in the hospital scene in Part 2. She never looked at any other man like that, not Chris, not Michael, not Roger and not Oscar. She was happy to see him in that episode because he was in great danger the last thing she remembered. Don't get me wrong, Lindsay and Richard seemed to have a good relationship which translated into a good onscreen chemistry, but I didn't see the romantic sparks the way there was with Lee and Lindsay. The age issue was at the bottom of my list, but I did think of another reason why not Oscar. Before her accident, Jaime expressed concern about the life they would have with their careers. Much later, Steve alluded to the same thing with Kimberly in the last reunion movie saying that the job didn't leave room for much else. This would have been a greater problem with Oscar since Steve was never married to the OSI the way Steve was. Anyway, that's just my humble opinion. End of rant. |

So true. It really was like Oscar was "married" to the OSI. At the same time, I do believe he always had a special place in his heart for Jaime. |

Well I guess as a kid, Oscar seemed way too old for me to think about as a love interest for Jaime. Steve was certainly no spring chick to me then either. My shipping S & J never came from going gaga over Steve. Of course, now as a middle aged woman, I can certainly appreciate Steve's looks a lot more (and boy, can I)...heck, even Oscar looks a lot better to me now, for that matter. S & J's story just really grabbed me back then. The whole childhood sweethearts thing, their wonderful chemistry and everything they went through together. You have to admit, it was all pretty melodramatic and quite unusual at that time for an action adventure/sci-fi show mostly aimed at kids...to have Jaime die, then brought back to life with no memory of Steve. Then you throw in her infatuation with the doctor who saved her life. All the while, poor Steve remaining very stoic as he hung around helping Jaime adjust to her bionics again and telling the good doctor, "I guess we'll just have to wait and see which way she goes"...instead of telling him where HE could go! Now if that's not a story to tug at your heartstrings! At 10 years old, S & J were the very first tv/movie couple that I ever rooted for...and I guess in some cases, your first tv/movie romance is like your own first personal romance in the sense that you never really forget it. I could never see Jaime with anyone other than Steve. But putting all that aside, watching the series as an adult has given me another perspective on why J & O wouldn't work for me as a couple. While they had a nice rapport with each other, they had very different lifestyles. Oscar had little life outside the OSI (that we saw anyway). For some reason, given my impression of him, I think if he had pulled himself away from the office long enough to have a relationship, it would be a very cultured one at that...museums, opera, ballet and fine dining all the way (Steve did once say that Oscar looks great in a tux). Not that Jaime could never enjoy all those things with Oscar, but I couldn't see her making a habit of it. She's more the adventurous type and enjoyed that kind of life with Steve...jumping out of airplanes, getting launched from a torpedo tube in the ocean, tennis, racquetball, swimming and horseback riding. Then unwinding with some simple pleasures like needlepoint, a walk around the lake and pizza at the Capri. Oh, and Jaime loved to bake pies...which Steve loved to eat while she sat on his lap as Oscar barked over the phone about him getting back to work...because after all...it's all about work with Oscar.
