The Brigadier said, “The Master doesn’t kill aimlessly. He’s here, in California, for a reason and these men got in his way somehow.” The Brigadier looked into the distance before matter-of-factly continuing. “He usually wants to rule the universe or, at the very least, this planet. Here is his photo although he could look different.”

Jaime and Oscar both looked at the photo. The Master was a middle aged man with dark hair and features. He had a moustache and go-tee. A severe looking man that looked straight into the camera if trying to control it. The photo made Jaime’s skin crawl.

“He can be quite charming if he wants,” continued Lethbridge-Stewart. “He’s brilliant of course and is adept at mind control. We’ve had a number of dealings with him which is why we are here.”

Jaime noticed that Oscar was wearing a very troubled look and she understood exactly how he felt. “Uh, I’m not sure…this is something we should be…I mean where do we start?” Jaime was scared and not afraid to show it.

Benton piped up for the first time to confidently declare, “We can capture him Miss, don’t you worry.”

With a glance at Benton then looking to the Brigadier, Oscar asked, “And just how are we going to…capture…someone that we don’t know for sure what he looks like or what he is doing, a man that can control our minds and has the power to kill us with a deadly weapon?”

Lethbridge-Stewart looked Oscar straight in the eye, “We just do. The dead men both worked in electronics. Are there any special electronic experiments or testing happening in Los Angeles?” He shifted slightly in his seat before continuing, “I’ve a call into my scientific advisor. When he shows up I’m hoping to have details on the Master’s whereabouts.”

“How long before he shows up?”

With an annoyed sigh and a glance to Benton who was looking at the ceiling, the Brigadier replied to Oscar’s question, “The Doctor? Who knows.”

That evening over dinner, Oscar was preoccupied. The air was heavy with unsaid worries and doubts. Oscar had called for Rudy to join them in California. He thought Rudy would be able to work with this mysterious doctor, if he showed up. Despite his hatred of the NSB, Oscar called Bill Parr to gather more agents to find the Master. There was to be a meeting with the NSB, OSI and UNIT personnel to make assignments.

Oscar moved to the couch as Jaime cleared the table. She kept looking at him not knowing what to say. Jaime felt his terror and shared it. This felt like the most dangerous mission she had ever undertaken but as terrified as she was, this killer had to be stopped. Oscar didn’t even flinch when Jaime sat next to him and took his hand.

“Penny for your thoughts,” Jaime lightly told him.

He responded with a troubled look in his eyes, “I don’t even know where to begin.” They sat looking into each other’s eyes for what seemed like ages before Oscar took a deep breath, let go of Jaime’s hand and moved towards the fireplace. “This…situation is…Jaime, I can’t deal with it. I’m the director of the OSI and as such, I have to send agents into this. Some may die.”

Jaime could see his face go red and his whole body tense up as he fought his conflicting emotions. His reaction took her by surprise as she listened and watched him lose control.

“You are an agent, one of my best. As director I need you to join the search for the Master. But…my…personal feelings…are stopping me. Jaime, I can’t stop thinking of what that…that…monster might do to you. Since seeing those photos of the shrunken men, I can’t get the vision of seeing You like that out of my head. I can’t let that happen. There will be hell to pay but I can’t send you in. I just can’t…”

Jaime walked over to take him in her arms. She could feel him shaking as he tried to deal with the situation. Thoughts and emotions rolled through her. “Oscar, it’s okay. Let it out, let it all out.” The realization of what he had revealed made her all the more willing to give him comfort. He’s in love with me. She’d always had a soft spot for him and thought there was some chemistry between them but Jaime never thought he would put his guard down. She hadn't allowed herself any thoughts that he would be more than a boss and friend.

As she still held on to him but pulled back to look up at his face, “Listen, I’m afraid too. I don’t want to lose you. I can’t let you go in there and me stay in safety. We’re a team and a really good one. We have to stop the Master. I’m willing to, no, I’m more than willing - I want to help.” As she looked in his eyes she could see tears. Jaime on impulse kissed him, paused, then kissed him again each time kissing him a few seconds longer. In the heat of the emotionally charged exchange, Oscar passionately took her in his arms to kiss her like she’d never experienced before.

They fumbled and stumbled in their haste to find the bed. Clothes were beginning to be discarded when Oscar momentarily came to his senses. “I don’t think…’this’…will help me regain objectivity in assigning you to dangerous missions.”

Jaime looked up at him then took his face in her hands, “Oscar, the director of the OSI and Agent Sommers are somewhere else. Right now, we’re just Oscar and Jaime.” Jaime paused to let what she had to say sink in, “I want to be with you tonight.”

With that statement, Oscar’s heart melted and what control he had disappeared.
