I'm going to try NaNoWriMo again this year - with a BW story, of course. I have a great idea but really need some input and opinions. It's going to be set mostly in the abandoned Six Flags New Orleans (destroyed by Hurricane Katrina). My question to you is: would it be too jarring to simply write our 'Core Four' as they are...but in the present day? (Perhaps with an author's note.) Or would it be better to write them at the age they would be today? It would really be a better story if they were the ages they were in the series but I'm worried that it might not work for the readers.

The author's note would read something like this: For storyline purposes, I have transported the characters to the year 2011. I promise to return them unharmed (well, most of them anyway) when I am done.

What do you think?

Hello Beth

I think that with the author's note, it's OK.

Moreover at 62 and 70, Jaime and Steve would perhap's not have the same agility...and on their eighties, Oscar and Rudy should have retired.

Thank you, Bionika. I could probably make the lack of fitness and agility work...but the story would be so much better if they were their 'usual' ages. And I really want to use this abandoned theme park. I've got a wonderful site bookmarked that has photos of what's left of the rides and the midway - and it's a really eerie place now. Will be a lot of fun to write.

I'm eager to read you. When the "NaNoWriMo" will begin?

50,000 words (or more!) in 30 days starts on November 1st.
I've completed the NaNoWriMo (National Writing Month) 3 times: 2007, 2009 and 2010. Had no computer access in November, 2008 and was fresh out of surgery in 2011. Really hoping to make it through again this year. (I think I can...I think I can...I think I can!)

I don't think you need to mention a year at all. You could explain that a hurricane had hit whatever area and there is this abandoned Six Flags. Put the story in their time. It's fiction anyway - you don't have to have the history accurate. Writer's discretion. Have fun!

Thank you, SW&D. Not sure about that though, as the park wasn't built until about a decade ago. But it's great to have another option to think about. :)

There was a theme park in New Orleans during the 70's on Lake Ponchatrain (sp?) that you could use and have a fictional hurricane. I think creative license would allow that due to the fact you want to keep the story set where they are the younger age. Can't wait to read it!

I have dozens of these pictures. I don't think I can get permission to actually add them to the story but they will be the basis of some great descriptions - and the situations I can throw the 'Core Four' into are endless!

down30...thank you! This is the suggestion I will be going with. It probably won't be set in New Orleans, but our Core Four will not be leaving the 70's, after all. Instead, Season Four will continue with a 3-episode arc set in a fictional (destroyed and abandoned) park. I've amassed more than 100 photos of the old Six Flags-New Orleans and will still use them for inspiration and descriptive purposes...but the rides and the park will not be named. I am very excited to get going on this one! It'll be hard to wait another week! (Then again, have to finish episode 4 first - LOL!)

Can't wait to read it! I went to the theme park in the 70's in New Orleans. So many ways you can take that and work with it. New Orleans is lucky it was not hit by a hurricane Katrina many more times!

Instead of the tag line you could have the part of the story our friends some how being shot in to the future. Even meeting their future selves???
