Were we ever given any sort of background on Mark Russell ("Russ") on the show? Was he ever a field operative? I'm assuming he was because of the way in handled himself in Mirror Image and another I can't think of. He does know how to handle a gun. Or could he have come into his position after working Security detail for the OSI? What do you think - was Russ ever a field operative, out working missions/assignments? Could he train a new operative? (If, for whatever reason, Steve could not...) |

As Oscar's 2nd in command, I would think he had some sort of intelligence training. Oscar was from Naval intelligence so maybe Russ also had military training. We only saw Russ trailing after Oscar but I would believe he had various duties. My guess is that Oscar was involved giving assignments to the bionic team but Russ probably gave out assignments to other agents. I can't imagine the director would give assignments to every agent in the department. There were probably other deputy directors besides Russ but he was probably the most senior. |

I think that it was in "Which one is Jaime?" because it's the only other episode in which this character have action scenes. I remember him protecting Callahan when the villains shooted at the rescue team but I don't remember if he had a gun (well I think so because Oscar was carrying one and so must do the other members of this team) . This is an exellent pretext for watching again this episode. Bionika |

Thank you, Bionika. Have to admit I still haven't seen that episode...but this is very good to know. I think I am remembering him in Jaime's Mother. I know he was at the gravesite but am not sure if he was with Oscar for the rest of the episode. Great excuse to watch that one again! |

Yes, we know few things about this character. Watching at the show we can think that he is responsible for O.S.I - L.A. (and perhaps West Coast agents). I think that in this position he should at least have received a training for learning how to use a gun because like Oscar (and if he like it and not only paperwork) he should have sometimes to go on the field with agents or act as bodyguard for threatened scientist...And as you said, we can see that at least in "mirror image". But as said SnowWhite&Dopey, I imagine him more giving assigments or providing means or gathering information than training himself a new operative (and if this operative is bionic , for me, the answer is "no". Only Jaime or Steve can do it because trainig a bionic operative doesn't not involve only how to do but also how to deal with feelings inherent to bionic condition and that only a bionic person could do it. ) In fact, to have no knowledge of his background on the show gives to writers freedom because we have no canons to respect and we can invent whatever we want. I remember some fanfictions telling that he has began to work for N.S.B....one giving him a brother.... Bionika Edited by Bionika, Oct 15 2012, 03:38 PM.

"Jaime's Mother" is his first appearance, he stayed with Oscar but there's no action scenes for him or Oscar in this episode. In "Jailing of Jaime" the character had circa two lines of text and it's only inside O.S.I. building. In "Mirror Image", he is seen in Washington, perhaps because Oscar needed help there during vacation period (it's only my opinion). In "Doomsday is today", he mainly coordinates the informations for Oscar during this big crisis. And perhaps Elijah Cooper complex was located in West Coast area? (Don't remember ==> another episode to watch again! )In "Brain Wash", Oscar prevented Russ from doing anything else than waiting for him! Bionika Edited by Bionika, Oct 14 2012, 04:08 PM.

As I have read the last chapter of "Doubts, dangers and decisions", with the talk between Jaime and Steve about her future training as an operative I'm guessing what you have in you minds and I'll change a little bit my position. Yes, even if it's not completely in his usual assigments, Russ could train Jaime for things about intelligence only (use a gun, a datacom, give all necessary information, resist to questioning, protect somebody, ...). It could be Oscar's choice in order not to have Jaime trained by an average instructor (lamda) but by somebody she knew as a colleague and a friend (she welcomed him by a kiss on cheek at beginning of "which one is Jaime? ") and who knows her too. No doubt that Oscar should have prefer to do it personnally like he had probably did the first time (cf "On the run" : "use all the skills that I taught you..." ). Will be starting it in just a few days, as soon as SUMMER is complete. (After it sat waiting for 3 years, it deserved to go next...especially since I kept promising back then and never delivered.) |

I have watched again the episode...Yes of course he carried a gun. Like in "Mirror image" for saving Jaime, Oscar didn't hesitated to have Russ belonging to "Callahan's" rescue team so it make me think that this is completely in his line of duty. And he shows his skills for that when he watches the surroundings in the last minutes of the episode. Bionika Edited by Bionika, Oct 19 2012, 03:59 PM.
