A STARTLING DISCOVERY This is a remake of the episodes Dead ringer and maybe a little bit of Look Alike with a totally different spin. Hope you like it. After an auto accident Steve receives some shocking news from his mother Steve had just completed an assignment. He sat in his living room in front of the T V. He had the Redskins football game on and was just getting ready to enjoy a thick juicy steak. He was just about to take the first bite when the doorbell rang. “Dam” He grumbled. “I’ll give you five to one odds its Oscar If it is, he’s getting the bionic boot to the moon.” Steve opened the door. To his shock and dismay Helen and Jim stood on the doorstep. “Mom, dad, what are you doing in DC? Come on in.” Steve held the door for them. “Here have a seat.” He cleared away a weeks worth of mail he had thrown on the couch so he could go through it later. “Oh Steve! we’re interrupting you dinner.” Jim interrupted when he saw the TV tray with Steve’s steak dinner on it. “Don’t be silly. So what brings you to DC?” Steve asked again. “We have decided to do some traveling.” Helen started. ‘We thought we might as well scope out the East Coast first. So here we are.” “How long will you be in Washington?” Steve asked His mouth watering for his steak. “I guess we can stay as long as we want.” Jim chimed in. “Look don’t let us stop you eat your dinner. I thought we taught you better than to let a perfectly good piece of steak go to waste.” “Thanks!” Steve declared as he began to dig in. “Well” Steve began between bites. “I just got back from an assignment. I have an appointment with Rudy tomorrow. Tell you what I’ll do. I’ll hire a tour guide for you. He can get you into places most tourists can’t.” “That would be great son.” Jim stated. “But we don’t want you to go to any…” “No trouble.” Steve cut him off. “I want you two to see everything the City has to offer. I’ll arrange it before my appointment with Rudy.” “That would be nice.” Helen exclaimed. “But like Jim said if it’s to much trouble…” “No I have pretty good connections here. You’ll get the VIP treatment.” Steve told them as he guzzled the last of the beer from his glass. “Don’t worry about a thing.” “Well that will be great. Will we see you tomorrow?” Helens eyes pleaded “More than likely not till late afternoon. I don’t go into Rudy till about ten. I told him I wanted to sleep in. Anyway it usually takes about three to four hours for everything.” “Maybe we can have dinner.” Helen suggested “It’s a date.” Steve showed them to the door. “I’ll call you tomorrow then.” Steve said as he opened the car door for his mother. Steve walked back into the house. He put the rest of his steak in the oven to warm then he called Oscar. “Yes Steve.” Oscar said as he picked up his private line at work. “Is anything wrong? Rudy is right here.” “No, nothing is wrong. Oscar my folks are in town…” “That’s great Steve. What are they going to do a little sight seeing?” “That’s the plan Oscar. I was hoping…” “Say no more what hotel are they at. I’ll have a tour guide for them first thing in the morning.” “Thanks Oscar tell Rudy I’ll see him around ten. I’m having dinner with them tomorrow night if you want to join us.” ‘We just might at that.” Oscar hung up and gave Rudy Steve’s message. At Steve’s house he finished his steak while the Redskins went into overtime with the Dallas Cowboys. The next morning Steve was in Rudy’s office at ten sharp. “Glad you’re back Steve.” Rudy greeted. “Now let see if I need to do any repairs. “I think you might. By the way did Oscar tell you we’re having dinner tonight?” “Yea he did. I’d be more than happy to join if I wouldn’t imposing.” “Rudy you could never impose.” Steve informed him.’’ “Well that’s great.” Rudy exclaimed, and then got down to business. “Now about those repairs.” Rudy began to repair whatever damage had occurred. “There! Steve, try that out.” Rudy exclaimed when he finished “Works great Rudy thank, look I’m going to go ask Oscar if my folks got off all right, who knows maybe I can catch up with them. This didn’t take as long as I thought.” “The repairs were minor this time. That sounds like a great idea I bet they will be pleasantly surprised.” “See you tonight. We have 7:30 reservations at Drisco’s:” “I’ll be there.” Rudy muttered as he interested himself in the file he was reading before Steve had walked in. “With out disturbing Steve quietly slipped out of Rudy’s office and headed for Oscar’s “Steve!” Oscar declared. “Are you done with Rudy already?” He glanced at his watch. “Yea the repairs were real minor this time around. In fact the whole mission I had to only use my bionics once.” “Really, it went that well?” “Yea The formula I retrieved is in Rudy’s lab. Must be pretty important there were a lot of people who didn’t want me to have it.” Oscar removed his glasses and looked at Steve. “I thought you said it went well?” Steve gave a slight laugh, “Well it did. I guess. But I used my head more than my bionics.” “Oh I see.” Oscar remained behind his desk. “Anyway Oscar did my folks get off ok?” Steve was anxious to catch up to them. “Yea they are enjoying Washington in grand style.” Oscar started shuffling papers on his desk. “Anything else I can do for you?” “I was hoping I could catch up with them. You wouldn’t happen to know where they are would you?” “As a matter of fact…” Oscar handed him a sheet of paper. “This is the schedule. I’m sorry Steve I should have figured that’s what you wanted.” “That’s ok Oscar.” Steve glanced at the paper. “According to this they are at Washington Monument.” Steve mumbled as he headed out the door. “What did you say Steve?” Oscar glanced up and Steve was gone. After leaving Oscar’s office Steve got in his car and headed for the Washington Monument. He caught up to his folks, as they were just getting ready to leave. “Steve!” Helen cried. “I didn’t think we would see you till tonight.” “I finished early. I thought I would join your tour.” “We would love to have you.” Jim stated. “This is Tom Star. Oscar hired him to give us the full treatment.” Steve and Tom shook hands. “I was hoping to get to meet you Col. Austin.” Shall we continue with the tour?” Steve suggested. “The tour guide gave him a puzzled look “Are you joining us.” “That’s the idea.” Steve gave a snarl. “Do you have any objections?” “No sir. I just thought… Oh never mind.” Steve enjoyed the tour as much as his parents did. When it was finished he gave them a ride back to their hotel “I’ll send a car for you to pick you up for dinner.” Steve said as he escorted his mother back up to their room. I’m going to go clean up I’ll see you at Drisco’s.” “That sounds wonderful. We’ll see you then.” Steve left the hotel and headed for home. He never made it. He was thinking about the wonderful time he had had that afternoon with his parents. He only wished they would stay in Washington, then maybe on the other hand he could move back to Ojai. Oscar would have to go out of his way, but… Steve was so preoccupied in what he was thinking he didn’t see the truck in front of him had come to a stop. Steve slammed on his breaks and swerved to avoid the collision. Steve’s car went off the road smashing into a tree. Feeling he wasn’t hurt Steve let himself out of the car. He looked around to see if anyone had spotted the crash and might be willing to help. In the distance Steve saw a group of trees as he stared at them He saw a very familiar person standing in the distance, then he lost conciseness and fell back on to the front seat. At Drisco’s everyone had arrived. “Steve’s not here yet?” Oscar asked as he sat across from Rudy, leaving the chair opposite Helen vacant for her tardy son. “No I’m surprised to.” Jim stated. “Steve is usually on time.” “Yea I know. Maybe he’s stuck in traffic, it’s pretty bad most of the time in the City. Why don’t we order drinks? I bet he’s here before they come.” The drinks arrived and Still no Steve. Rudy turned to Oscar “I’m getting worried.” Rudy whispered. “Yea me to” Oscar whispered back. “I wonder…” The host who had walked over to the table interrupted them “Dr. Wells? You have a phone call.” Fearing the worse Rudy took the receiver. “Yes I’ll be right there.” He replaced the receiver then thanked the host. “What is it Rudy?” Helen was shaking. “Is it Steve?” “I’m afraid so. There’s been an accident.” Rudy turned to Oscar “He’s at National right now.” Oscar left money for the drinks and Rudy threw some in for a tip and the four of them left the restaurant and headed for the National Medical Center. Oscar and Rudy pushed through the doors to the Special Bionics Section. With Helen and Jim trailing behind. Rudy let the pair into his office, then the two of them headed to check on Steve. Steve was just coming around when the stepped in. “Oscar go get Helen.” Rudy said. Since Steve is coming around I think his mother should be here, well since she’s here anyway.” While Oscar went to retrieve Helen Rudy began to check Steve over. “Well no major damage.” He reported. “You have a concussion, but other than that I think your going to be just fine.” Helen stepped in with Oscar. “It’s ok mom.” Steve assured it’s not as bad as it looks.” “Well I hope not.” Helen exclaimed. “Steve?” Rudy asked do you remember what happened. Steve told Rudy in detail about not seeing the truck in time and swerving to avoid it, “It was the weirdest thing.” Steve started. “What’s that Steve?” Rudy wondered. “Well it was right after the crash. I thought I was fine so I got out of the car. I was hoping to find someone to help.” “Go on.” Rudy encouraged. He wanted Steve to remember as many details as he could. “It was the strangest thing. I saw this person in the distance just staring…” Rudy shook his head. “Some people, they see an accident and all they can do is stare…” “Well this somebody could’ve been my twin brother.” At these words Helen’s hand flew to her mouth, she let out a loud gasp. “Oh my g-d!” She cried. “Scottie?” “Scott?” Oscar turned toward her. “Who’s Scott?” “Scott is Steve’s identical twin brother…” |

Ooh! I did not see that coming! Was guessing it might've been the tour guide that Steve saw. What a great twist! I'm looking forward to seeing where you take this one. |

Oscar, Rudy and Steve stared at her in disbelief. “Twin brother?” Oscar finally broke the silence as he shook his head. “He died before I took them home from the hospital. Anyway that’s what they told me.” Helen began to cry. “Now I wonder…” “Wonder what?” Oscar turned to her. “If that was actually the case….I mean if Steve saw…” “Helen.” Rudy began. “Steve had a concussion. I’m sure he didn’t see what he thought he saw.” Helen shook her head. “No Rudy you’re wrong. Ever since the day they told me he had died…I never believed it, but what was I supposed to do? I was a single mother, back in a time when people frowned on it.” “But your husband had been killed in the war.” Oscar reminded. “Yes I know, but it didn’t matter. It was believed that children should be raised by a mother and a father…” “I just can’t believe they would take one…what about the funeral I mean…I’m sorry Helen. I don’t mean to sound well insensitive ” “Oscar could still barely speak. “They suggested it be a closed casket.” Helen began to cry at the memory. Steve lay back on his pillow hardly believing what he was hearing. “Mom? Why didn’t you ever tell me this before?” “I don’t know. I guess by the time you were old enough to understand it was past history.” “I don’t mean to interrupt.” Oscar broke in, “But you said the casket was closed?” “Yes it was.” Helen choked back the tears. Oscar thought for a moment. Then spoke again. “Did you ever see the…well the…Oh I’m sorry, Helen. There just is no delicate way to phrase it? You never saw the body?” “They said it wasn’t a good idea.” Helen sobbed. “I see. If you will all excuse me.” Oscar started out of the room. “I’ll be right back.” Rudy followed Oscar out into the hall “You don’t believe that do you?” “As a matter of fact I do. I just don’t know how I’m going to approach Helen to get permission to have the ‘body’ exhumed “ “You can’t be serious?” Rudy grabbed his arm. ///////////////////////////// Back in Steve’s room Steve stared blankly out the window. Helen stepped over to him. “Oh honey. I’m so sorry I never told you. When you were a little boy, I was afraid you would feel sad about your brother, then when you grew up it seemed like it really didn’t matter.” Steve continued to stare out the window. As he did once again he saw himself standing on a rooftop across the street. “There he is again mom.” Steve cried out. “Where honey.” Helen turned in the direction he was looking. “Never mind he’s not there now. Look I’m tired if you don’t mind.” “Not at all, I’ll be right over here if you need me.” Helen sat in a chair on the other side of the room. ///////////////////// “I’m very serious Rudy.” Oscar continued. “Helen was right. A lot went on in the 40s concerning single women and children. If they could provide for them that was one thing, but if they asked for help many people lost their children. Not just babies, but older kids as well…” “I remember reading about that.” Rudy stated. “You think that happened to Helen.” “I’m sure it did. Look I had an assignment ready for Steve. I was holding off till his parents left because it’s really not priority, well I didn’t think it was until now. There are two scientists who slipped into the country.” “Really?” Rudy questioned. “Yea, and they are experimenting with bionics. Rudy if they somehow have Steve’s brother Scott…” “Oscar that is highly unlikely.” Rudy emphasized “That’s why I want the casket brought up, Rudy if what I suspect is true, there will be either no body, or that of some poor infant that didn’t make it. You could determine if the baby is Steve’s identical twin…” “What if they weren’t identical, what if they were fraternal?” “You could still determine if they were at least brothers.” Oscar hammered the point. “I suppose…” “Good, then I’ll get a court order, I really don’t want to upset Helen. She’s upset enough.” Oscar left to make the arrangements. Rudy went back into Steve’s room. Helen was standing over him. “So how is he Dr. Elgin?” Rudy laughed. “I think he’s going to be just fine Rudy.” Helen smiled. “He fell asleep just before you came in. But he insists he saw that man again. The one he says looks like him” “Really? Where?” “Just outside over on the rooftop oh Rudy if it is Scott…” “Helen the chances of that are a million to one” Rudy told her. “Well anyway I think he’ll sleep for a while anyway.” “Good. I need to speak to you about something. Why don’t we go down to my office?” “It sounds serious Rudy.” Helen stated after Rudy settled her on the couch in his office. “I’m not sure how to go about this. Like Oscar said, there is really no delicate way to put it. Oscar wants Scott’s body exhumed.” Helen stared at him for a moment. “Yes I do suppose it is for the best. What do I need to do?” “You don’t need to do a thing. Oscar is getting a court order right now.” < “I guess we sit back and wait then, imagine after all these year, my babies together again.” Rudy didn’t have the heart to tell her that that if what Oscar suspected was true, her other baby more than likely was an enemy agent working for the other side and was probably out to kill the only child she had left. ///////////////////////// “Yes Mr. Goldman. We’ll get right on it.” The man on the other end of the phone told him. “I want hourly reports.” Oscar ordered. “Yes sir.” Oscar hung up and headed for Rudy’s office. “Rudy. I’m going out to Ojai. I want to take personal charge of this.” “Ok Oscar, I told Helen what was going on. She is very anxious to hear.” “I’ll let you know as soon as I know anything.” Oscar left for Andrews where a jet was warming up for him. Rudy and Helen were both standing over Steve when he woke up. ‘Hey you two, what’s going on?” Rudy thought long and hard before he decided it was ok to share the information with Steve. “Oscar is in Ojai. He is overseeing, well they are exhuming the casket that is to have the remains of your brother.” “Easy Rudy, my mother is right …” “I already know honey. After all these years my questions will soon be answered.” “What questions? Mom I wish you had shared this with me a long time ago. Maybe we could have already done this.” “I suppose you are right dear, I just didn’t know how to tell you.” “Yea I guess that isn’t a topic for the dinner table.” Steve turned to Rudy. “So when do we find out? “Oscar said he would give us, or try to give us hourly reports.” “Well you be sure and keep me posted.” Steve closed his eyes and drifted back to sleep “Rudy?” Fear rose in Helen’s voice. “He’s just sleeping. Why don’t we go to my office again and see if Oscar has called. The phone was ringing as they entered. “Rudy it’s Oscar they finally broke through. We should know in less than an hour whether or not there is well if there is a body in that casket.” “We’ll be standing by Oscar.” Rudy hung up the phone and turned to Helen. “They should know in about another hour.” “That long? Well I suppose I’ve waited thirty years and better, another hour won’t hurt.” “That’s the spirit.” Rudy smiled. “I’m going to check on Steve. Why don’t you just relax there’s a deli around the corner that delivers if you are interested.” “Thank you I am a bit hungry.” “I’ll inform the gate some one will bring it up to you.” “Thank you for being so helpful” Helen gave him a hug. “Think nothing of it. I’m like Steve though this information would have been nice to have had a long time ago.” “I know now that it is out in the open I am relieved.” Helen exhaled deeply. “I have kept it inside for so long.” “Well now that it’s out in the open, maybe something will come from it.” He was just getting ready to leave the room when the phone rang once again, “Oscar any news?” “Not yet Rudy, they are very close though.” Oscar spoke from the excavation sight. Rudy turned to Helen. “Would you go see if Steve is awake?” Rudy asked. “If he is tell him I’m on the phone with Oscar and I’ll be there shortly.” “I will” Helen left the room and started for her son’s. “Ok Oscar I just had to send Helen out…” “Yea? What is it Rudy?” “I just thought of something, obviously who ever is doing this. He either knows he is Steve’s twin, or he looks enough like him to pull this off. I’m ordering round the clock guards for Steve I don’t want them to get Steve before we get them.” “I agree. I’ll make the arrangements.” “Thanks. He still claims what he saw is real. I’m beginning to believe it myself. I would have said something were very wrong with Steve if Helen hadn’t mentioned Scott to us.” ‘Yea I know…. hang on a minute Rudy. Rudy could hear confusion in the background. The Oscar’s voice though not directed at Rudy “What? Well that’s what I thought.” “Oscar! “ Rudy called into the phone. “What’s going on?” “Rudy,” Oscar stated as he got back on the phone. “The casket is empty” <<<<<<<>>>>>>> “Ok Oscar so what you are trying to tell me is that Steve’s own twin brother is involved in this?” “I’m on my way back now. If you can hold Steve off till I get there I would appreciate it.” “I’ll try, but you know Steve. He wants answers and he wants them now!!” “Yea I know. I’ll be there first thing in the morning.’ “Ok I’ll try to hold them both off till then.” Rudy hung up the phone and went back down to Steve’s room. “Helen I think you should go back to the hotel and get some rest.” “What did Oscar say?” Helen was anxious “He said they wouldn’t know until morning. He’s going to be here as soon a possible.” “Well then I guess I’ll wait till morning. If there are any changes”…she pointed to Steve. “I’ll let you know.” Rudy assured. “I’m sure he’ll be just fine.” Rudy led her down the hall “Oh wait here. You’ll need this to get back in here in the morning.” He turned to the guard. “Will you be on duty in the morning?” “No sir unless…” “I would appreciate it if you were. I don’t want her to have any trouble in the morning.” “I’ll be here sir.” The guard promised. Rudy watched Helen walk down the hall; he then headed back to Steve’s room “I heard most of that. What did Oscar say?” Rudy shook his head. “Spill it Rudy!!” “Ok, ok. The casket was empty Steve.” “So that means that I do have a twin brother out there.” Steve looked toward the window. Rudy nodded. “Yea Steve, it looks that way. Unfortunately he’s working for the other side. Now weather or not he’s one of the scientists I don’t know. Chances are he works for them over here.” “There is another possibility.” Steve continued looking out the window. “What’s that?” “They took him by mistake” Steve muttered more to himself than Rudy…. |

This is fascinating - what a novel idea! And I think Steve is onto something that no one else has given voice to yet. His twin could be a totally innocent bystander, grabber by mistake and now trying (somehow) to contact him for help. Then again, his twin could be a psychotic murderer - I can't wait to find out! |

(3) “I doubt that is very likely.” Rudy explained. “Steve it’s just not possible. “That’s what you said about the possibility of my brother still being alive.” Steve reminded. “Well I think it is very possible. When do I get out of here?” “Not till day after tomorrow at least.” Rudy shook his head. “Look, why don’t you get some rest, ok?” “How can I rest Rudy knowing my brother is out there somewhere and in danger?” “I hate to tell you this but you’re the one in danger Steve.” Rudy told him. “I don’t believe it. I want you to let me out of here now. I won’t sleep anyway.” “Well this will help.” Rudy injected him with a mild sedative. “Now just let that take an effect I’ll be here first thing in the morning.” “Yea well I uh….” Steve drifted to sleep. /////////////////////// “Oscar was standing outside the Bionic’s Section when Rudy left. “How’s Steve?” He asked. “Sleeping I gave him a sedative. He’s worried that who ever is in on this grabbed Scott by mistake.” “No Rudy. No mistake. He’s working for them.” “You have proof? Maybe Steve is right.” “No I don’t have the proof yet, that’s why I didn’t want to say anything till morning. I’ve got everyone I can think of on this case.” “Well you know Steve. He wants on it too.” Rudy informed him. “Well I’m afraid that won’t be possible.” Oscar spoke softly. “I don’t want Steve involved in this at all. If I had my way, Steve would stay right here. Rudy, could you come up with…” “Oscar, no way!” Rudy protested. “You want Steve under wraps, then you tell him yourself, and tell him the truth.” “Yea I guess you’re right. He’d just figure it out anyway.” Oscar presumed. “Well listen Rudy I’ll see you in the morning. “ /////////////////////////// The next day Rudy arrived at the same time Helen Did. “How’s Steve today?” She asked. “I haven’t seen him yet, but I spoke to the nurse a assigned him last night He slept through the night at least. Come on let’s go see if he’s awake?” “I’m surprised he was able to sleep after that blow I delivered last night.” Helen sighed. “I know I had trouble sleeping.” “Well Steve took the news pretty well. I spoke to Oscar he said he would meet with us in Steve’s room at 10:00” “Did he tell you anything? I mean was my baby, well you know…” Rudy wasn’t real sure how to handle this one. “Helen I’m going to be very honest. What I say may sound harsh. The casket was empty.” “So that means they lied to me 34 years ago?” Helen cried. But remained calm. Rudy nodded “That’s about it.” He told her. “So my baby, Steve’s brother is alive, and out there somewhere?” “It’s a little more complicated that that Helen.” Rudy tried to explain. “You see if what we suspect is true…” By now they had reached Steve’s room. “Well …” “Mom!” Steve called out “I suppose Rudy told you.” “Yes. Oh Steve. I can’t believe it. What were you saying Rudy? If what you suspect…” “Rudy! What have you told her?” Steve was furious. “Nothing Steve. Just what I told you last night about the casket being empty…” “That’s all she needs to know!” Steve barked. “Now. When the hell….” Steve stopped and turned to his mother. “Sorry Mom” Then he turned to Rudy. “When are you letting me out of here?” “Keep acting the way you are now and maybe one day next week.” Rudy shot at him. “I’m sorry Rudy.” He turned to Helen. “Mom will you leave us to talk alone for just a minute?” “Sure honey.” Helen left the room. “Rudy I don’t want her to know that her ‘baby’ works for the other side. She doesn’t need to know that and besides we aren’t for certain that’s the case.” “It would stand to reason Steve.” Rudy sighed. “That may be true but she doesn’t need to know it, yet anyway. “Ok Steve I suppose you’re right. Now let’s see how you’re doing.” //////////////////////////// “I can’t believe it. I won’t believe it Oscar!!” Helen shouted. “Helen I’m sorry it’s true. It’s not his fault. The family that adopted him has worked for the other side for years. Long before they adopted Scott.” “Is that still his name?” Helen wondered “No it’s not. They changed it to Marcos” Oscar told her. “My poor baby. Oh Oscar you don’t know how angry this makes me. You’re sure they are after Steve?” “Yes Helen. You know about Steve’s bionics?” “Yes I do.” Helen was feeling a little better now. “They are experimenting with bionics only they aren’t sure what to do, they need Steve to make it work. And since Scott/Marcos looks just like Steve…” “Does he know he’s Steve’s twin?” Helen wondered “No, I don’t think so.” Oscar wasn’t sure himself. “I really doubt it. I mean Steve only found out yesterday. I doubt that the agency that placed Scott with the family told them he had a surviving twin.” “I suppose you’re right. Are you going to tell Steve?” Helen was still a bit shaky. “Yes. Are you going to be all right?” “I believe so.” Helen seemed much calmer now “Good. I’m going to go on in and talk to Steve. Is there anything I can get you?” Helen shook her head. “No Oscar I’ll be fine. Thanks for being honest with me.” Steve hit the ceiling when Oscar told him how Helen had taken the news. “You had no right to tell her!!” Steve screamed. “Steve she asked for the truth.” Oscar tried to calm him down. “She understands. I told her it wasn’t Scott’s fault…” “And that helped?” Steve’s voice lowered. “Rudy let me out of here. I need to get cracking on this.” “Steve. You’re not ready to go out in the field yet.” Rudy explained. “Oh come on I’m more than ready….” “No, no you’re not. You need at least another 72 hours. “72 hours? Rudy Those guys could be out of the country by then…” “Not without what they came for Steve.” Oscar said. “I have Fisk and Martin working on it.” “Fisk and Martin Come on Oscar.” Steve even I want you to stay ‘under wraps’ on this.” Oscar said. “At least till this is cleared up…” “I want to be the one to clear it up…” “No Steve I mean it. Even when Rudy does let you out, I wouldn’t let you on the assignment. Fisk and Martin are doing just fine.” “How can they be?” Steve demanded. “Steve you need to just take it easy.” Oscar assured “Don’t worry about Martin and Fisk.” /////////////////////// In a bar on the other side of town three men sat at a table in the back. “You are doing very well Marcos.” The first man said. “What is our next move? He is still in the hospital.” Marcos replied. “It is a good thing I resemble him so much.” “Yes, for that we are very lucky. Anyway we wait until he is released. I have done some snooping. He’ll be released in the morning.” The second man added. “Then we take him.” “And…” “Then you assume his identity until we have what we want….” |

< 4 > “All right. I’ll accept that for now. But if they haven’t cleared it up by the time Rudy let’s me out of here I want on the case.” Steve demanded. “No Steve. That’s not going to be possible.” Oscar muttered. “What do you mean? ‘Not possible’?” Steve eyed him suspiciously “Just what I said Steve. Look these guys are not going to stop till they have you, Fisk and Martin feel that once they have you, they’ll kill Marcos, or should I say Scott?” “You didn’t tell me that one.” Steve protested. “We aren’t sure mind you, but we just have a feeling they are using your brother to get to you. Only they don’t know he is your brother.” “Are you sure of that?” Steve asked. “No Steve, not 100% anyway” Oscar barely whispered. “If we know then they must know. I mean that would seem logical to me.” Steve interrupted. “Steve we aren’t certain they do know. Like I told your mother, you only found out yesterday yourself. “Yea I guess you’re right.”
“Steve one of the main reasons I don’t want you on the case is because of your personal involvement with the case. Even if he is your brother, he has worked for the other side longer than you have worked for us.” Steve turned toward Oscar. “He’s the enemy Steve. He is not to be trusted.” “Alright. I get your meaning. I just don’t quite understand it.” Steve sighed.
“Steve, we are only trying to protect you.” Rudy spoke for the first time He had listened to Steve and Oscar going back and forth. “I don’t need to be protected.” Steve protested. “Well maybe “protect’ was the wrong term, but…” “Oh come on Rudy ‘protect’? How many assignments have I been on? Oscar never seemed to worry about ‘protecting’ me then. No you’re just worried about your investment.” Steve stormed. “That’s not true Steve.” Oscar objected. “We care about you, and yes we don’t really want them to ‘take you apart’ and see how you work.” Steve slumped back on the pillow. “Yea, I get what you’re saying now.” “So then you’ll stay here?” Oscar’s hoped “I would like to be able to spend some time with my folks.” Steve reminded. “I was planning on releasing him in the morning Oscar.” Rudy stated then added. “I can’t keep him here forever.” “I suppose you’re right. Besides if they are going to make any kind of a move, I suppose Steve better be out of here any way.” “So you are putting me on the case?” Steve wondered. “Only as a decoy, I don’t like it very well. Fisk and Martin will be with you every minute.” “Ok then I guess I better get ready for tomorrow.” The two men left and let Steve get enough rest so he would be ready for the next day. ////////////////////////// “You are for certain he will be released in the morning?” Marcos asked. “Yes we are certain, our source at the hospital confirmed that Wells will release him first thing in the morning.” “That’s good.” Marcos laughed. “Then what happens?” “We capture him and just so they don’t miss him, you will take his place for a day or two at which time you will announce you are taking a vacation or something, then you will join us.” “Ok Parker.” Marcos said to the first man just as he left. “You sure he’s ready for this Parker?” The second man asked after Marcos had made his departure. “He’s more than ready Briggs. Don’t worry about it. It’s working perfectly.” “We couldn’t have asked for a better…well you know I mean the resemblance between him and Col Austin in mind boggling.” Parker noted. “Yes I know. We had planned on finding some one who resembled and then improve it with plastic surgery, but with Marcos we didn’t have to. The resemblance is uncanny though.” Briggs started. “I want you at the hospital no later than 8:00. Briggs. We can’t blow what may very well be our only opportunity.” “”Don’t worry Parker. I’ll be there at 7:30 if I have to. The sooner we get Col. Austin the better.” “I’ll see you after Marcos has assumed Col. Austin’s identity.” Parker continued “You will bring Col. Austin to me. I don’t care if he is dead or alive. From what I understand, we can find out all we need to know by performing an autopsy, so I would prefer you deliver him to me dead.” “Let’s hope we don’t have to go to those extremes Parker.” Briggs sighed. “But if there is not other way…I will deliver him dead.” ////////////////////// That night Helen and Jim paid Steve a visit in the hospital. “Look Mom, I want you and dad to go home.” Steve ordered. “Steve. We want to make sure you’re…’ “I’m fine mom, but it may not be safe for you here. Russ has agreed to drive you to the airport tonight.” “Steve.” Jim objected. “I think your mother wants to find out more about Scott.” “Mom. Oscar told me what he told you. Even if it is Scott, he’s not going to want to be with us.” “How can you be sure?” Helen argued “I just know.” Steve cut her off. “I mean it. I want the two of you to go back to Ojai on the next flight. Oscar has it all arranged. If I discover that Scott is actually on our side I’ll bring him to Ojai personally, but don’t get your hopes up.” Helen leaned over and stroked his hair. “Ok I’ll trust you on this one. If you need any thing just give us a call. “ “You can count on it. I’ll call you in a couple of days and let you know how everything turned out.” Russ was waiting for them when they left the hospital. “I have a special cab for Helen and Jim Elgin…nonstop service to Dulles.” “Thanks Russ.” Helen sighed as she slipped into the back seat. /////////////////////////// “The next morning as Steve was preparing to leave the hospital. Briggs was also preparing for the awaited time. He and Marcos sat in his van about a half a block from the hospital. “Don’t forget, the minute I grab him you take over.” Briggs reminded Marcos “Don’t worry I have been waiting for this for weeks.” “Very good” Briggs nodded as they continued to watch the street. “You’re sure he’s up to this Rudy?” Oscar asked for the fourth time in ten minutes. “Yes Oscar.” Rudy assured. “You think they will try and make their move as soon as we let Steve leave?” Oscar nodded. “I’m certain of it. I have Martin and Fisk ready to follow him the minute he leaves this area.” “Well Steve.” Rudy said as he entered Steve’s room “I guess this is it. If you have any problems, just give me a call.” “I will Rudy, don’t worry everything will be just fine.” The instant Steve left the Special Section of the hospital Fisk and Martin watched his every move. Steve rode the elevator down to the lobby then found his car and got in. He had only gone up the street a little ways when he saw Briggs standing beside his car with an appearent flat tire. Steve stopped to offer his assistance when Briggs struck him in the back of the head with a tire iron. The instant Briggs threw him in into his trunk Marcos climbed into Steve’s car and drove on with Fisk and Martin right behind him. //////////////////////// “Thanks Fisk.” Oscar spoke into the phone. He turned toward Rudy “That was Fisk. He and Martin are right behind Steve, so far nothing out of the ordinary has happened.” “Well that’s good.” Rudy sighed with relief. “I just hope if they are going to make their move, they do it soon so we can get this over with.” “I agree. At least we would know one way or the other.” Oscar muttered. He reached for the phone. “I want Russ on this one too. I don’t know. I just have a feeling…Russ? It’s Oscar. I want you to join Fisk and Martin.” “I was just about to call and ask you if you wanted me to. Let me know where I can catch up with them.” Oscar gave him the last know whereabouts of Steve and party and Russ quickly went to catch up to them. ////////////////////// In a small one room shack near Baltimore Harbor Steve slowly came around from the bump he had received several hours earlier. “I wouldn’t move to quickly if I were you.” Parker sat with a gun pointed at him. “And may I suggest no bionic heroics or you’re dead where you sit, Col Austin.” Steve rubbed the back of his head where the lump was slowly forming. “Well you’re one up on me.” Steve scowled. “What’s that supposed to mean?” Parker barked. “It means you know me, but I’m sure I don’t know you.” Steve wanted to enlighten them as to the fact that he knew all about the replacement, but that would be letting them know that he and this Marcos guy were twin brothers. He was hoping that when all was done and said that maybe Scott / Marcos would be willing to join him. “Let’s just say we are friends with a business proposition.” Parker laughed. “Well it that’s the way you want it.” Steve kept rubbing the back of his head. “I’ll say one of you gave me a pretty good knock.” “For that I am sorry, but it was necessary.” Briggs stated coming out of the shadows. “I thought I told you to stay out of sight.” Parker shouted. “The less he sees the better off we will all be.” “He’s not going to tell anyone about us.” Briggs laughed. “He’ll never get out of this alive.” “I suppose you’re right. Have you heard from Marcos?” Parker asked. “He said he would stop by the OSI in just a while, then announce he’s going out of the country, after we finish with him.” He pointed to Steve. “We will take him to the country Marcos indicates. And poor Col Austin will have had a terrible accident while on vacation.” “Sounds like you have it all planned Briggs?” “Yes I do.” Briggs laughed. ‘I wonder just how many more are in on this?’ Steve thought. ‘Neither one of them look like they have brains enough to tie their own shoe laces much less wonder how bionics work…’ |

Ooh...this is not looking good for Steve. Not good at all! How did Martin and Fisk let him out of their sights, even for those few moments? So glad Russ is joining the case! Great work keeping the tension level going - and I'll be biting my nails, waiting for the next installment. |

(5) “Steve? I must say I’m surprised to see you back here so soon.” Oscar eyed him suspiciously. “Well I had this wonderful idea.” Marcos began. “And that would be?” Oscar speculated. “I’m taking a vacation. I thought I would go to Rome for a week or so.” “Rome? why Rome?” Oscar was very dubious. This was very out of character for Steve. “I just need some R and R Oscar.” Marcos continued his deception. “Well maybe in a few days. I don’t think…well after all you’ve been through I don’t think Rudy would approve” Oscar wasn’t’ buying it for a moment. Just why did they want him to think Steve was in Rome? “Look I’ll talk to Rudy. I’m sure he won’t mind.” Marcos left Oscar’s office and headed down to Rudy’s Oscar dialed Rudy’s number the instant Steve / Scott / Marcos left. “Rudy I think Steve’s brother is on his way to your office. He wants to convince you that as Steve to let him leave the country.” “I got ya Oscar. Don’t worry I’ll advise it is not a wise…here he is.” Rudy abruptly hung up. ‘Steve what a pleasant surprise I was just going to order from the deli. Want anything? “As a matter of fact yes Rudy. I need a little R and R I need you to approve a trip to Rome.” Rudy shook his head. “I really don’t think that’s a good idea right now Steve. You just got out of the hospital a few hours ago. I think it’s best if you stay close to me.” “Rudy come on I really could use the rest.” Marcos protested. ‘No. Steve I really can’t approve it at this time. Maybe in a week or two…” “In a week or two Oscar will send me on assignment more than likely to Rome. Rudy you have to do this” Marcos kept trying to convince him. “I’m sorry Steve. I really wish I could. But what if you have problems?” “I won’t have any…” “Steve I’m sorry I can’t.” Rudy’s words were stern. ‘So just give up Marcos’ Rudy thought to him self. Dejected Marcos left Rudy’s lab. Oscar stood outside the door. “So what did he say pal?” “No go. Did you give him the heads up?” Marcos demanded. “No Steve Rudy is just concerned for you the same as I am. Look I’ll tell you When Rudy gives his nod, I’ll give you a two week vacation.” Oscar knew the promise was mute. Steve would never know that he had promised such a thing. “Ok I’ll take you up on it.” Marcos headed down the hall. Oscar went back to his office and picked up the phone “Russ. There has been a new development. The switch has already been made. Don’t let Marcos out of your sight. I’m hoping he will eventually lead us to Steve.” “Ok Oscar We won’t let our guard down Oscar.” Russ promised. /////////////////////// Back at the one room shack Steve had drifted in and out of sleep. He was jolted once again but a knock at the door. ‘Wonder if that’s my infamous twin now.’ Steve thought as he tried to sit up. “Dr. Richards.” Briggs greeted. “Do you have him?” The stranger’s voice asked “We sure do. I think we should wait till morning to get started. Dr. Richards.” Briggs whispered. “Why wait till tomorrow?” Richards wanted to know. “I just think it will be better.” Briggs. Suggested. “Well if you think it is best.” “That way Marcos as Austin will be out of the country and we won’t have to worry.” “I follow, I’ll be back at 8:00 sharp then.” Richards turned and left the ‘house’. ‘I guess I don’t have to figure out what that was all about’. Steve thought. “Don’t look so worried Col. Austin. You won’t feel a thing.” Parker laughed at the expression on Steve’s face. Steve slumped down on the couch “Yea, sure what ever.” He sighed. Parker turned to Briggs. “I don’t think he likes what we have planned for him.” He laughed. “Yea well he won’t have to worry about it much longer. “ Briggs commented. /////////////////////////// “Anything Russ?” Oscar was getting anxious. “Not yet Oscar. He’s laying real low.” Russ informed him. “We are watching his every move though.” “Keep me informed.” Oscar slammed the phone down. “Still nothing huh?” Rudy read the expression on Oscar’s face. “No Rudy I just wish Marcos would meet with his contact.” “At least it would lead us to Steve.” Rudy sighed. “I just hope when we do find him that he’s…well he’s…” “In one piece?” Oscar finished the sentence Rudy couldn’t. Grim faced Rudy nodded. “Yea.” “I know what you mean. Russ is working on it. I hope he comes up with something soon.” “Does he have any leads at all?” Rudy wondered. “He’s sticking with Marcos. We hope he leads us right to them.” “And if he doesn’t?” Rudy looked across the desk to Oscar. “You know the answer to that Rudy.” /////////////////////////// Steve had sat on the couch in the shack for hours when Parker appeared with a plate of food. “We thought you should have something to eat.” He snapped. “Why bother if you plan to kill me in the morning?” Steve replied. “Now? Who says we are going to kill you? If you cooperate, we may let you live.” Briggs laughed. ‘Very funny.’ Steve thought as he slowly started eating the food they had brought him. He hadn’t eaten much when the room suddenly began to spin. “What did you guys put in that?” Steve slurred. “Just something to help you sleep Col.” Briggs continued laughing. “Oh.” And Steve fell into a deep sleep /////////////////////////// “What?” Oscar shrieked into the phone the next morning. “Yes Russ I understand.” He slammed the phone down then turned to Rudy. “They lost Marcos.” “No!” Rudy cried. “Oscar they have to find him, he’s our only lead to Steve.” “I know that Rudy. They are looking.” Oscar sighed. /////////////////////////// The drugs they had given Steve the night before still had Steve in their grip as Briggs and Parker loaded Steve in to the back of a van and drove out of Maryland toward a medical clinic in Bethesda When they arrived Dr. Richard stood waiting to find out just want made this man tick… |

< End > “Anything Oscar?” Rudy asked as Oscar once again hung up the phone. “They located Marcos again, now if only he will lead us to where they are holding Steve.” Rudy glanced at his watch and slowly shook his head. “He may lead us to Steve, but I don’t think it is going to do us much good.” “What do you mean?” Oscar shouted. “Oscar they have had him for to long now. I’m sure they have already…” “Don’t say it Rudy! I don’t want to hear it!” Oscar continued to shout. “Ok, ok. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Rudy whispered. //////////////////////// As Dr. Richards pushed Steve into his operating room Marcos was getting itchy. He had to speak to Briggs and Parker. He knew they would be at the clinic so he got in his car and headed in that direction. Russ was watching from his own car across the street. As Marcos pulled out his drive, Russ slowly began to follow. As he followed Marcos he picked up the car phone and once again placed a call to Oscar. “Yes Russ.” Oscar spoke after picking up the phone before the first ring ended. “We’re on to something. Marcos is making a move. We are right behind him. I’ll let you know if we need back up.” “Ok Russ. Just don’t lose him this time.” Oscar barked. “We won’t.” Russ replied and hung up the phone. Oscar turned to Rudy. “They are following Marcos. I’m sure he is on his way to see his contacts. After all he was very upset when I said he couldn’t leave the country.” “That may be true, but like I said…. “ “I know Rudy, but maybe…just maybe….”
“Don’t count on it…” Rudy’s voice drifted off. ////////////////////////////// Russ and his team followed Marcos to the clinic. They watched as Marcos got out of his car and walked inside. The instant Marcos disappeared into the clinic Russ moved quickly. He jumped out of his car and followed Marcos inside. Briggs and Parker were standing outside Dr. Richard’s OR when Marcos approached them. “Marcos!!” You are a fool!!” Parker shouted. “I’m sorry, I had to see you.” Marcos muttered. “They won’t let me leave the country.” “What do you mean?” Parker continued. “You heard me. Goldman and Wells say I’m not well enough to leave the country” Marcos explained. “That’s still no reason to jeopardize our mission!” Briggs seethed “I’m sorry. I just wondered what I’m supposed to do. And what you’re going to do. You said everyone would think Austin was dead once they discovered his body floating down the river.” As Marcos, Briggs and Parker spoke Russ made his way down the hall listening to the entire conversation. He motioned for his back up team to get into play. “Ok Marcos. You can stay, but only for a while. We have to think of what to do next. I’m sure they know by now that Austin is missing. At least you could put those fears to rest. You may just have to pay Goldman another call.” “What if they are on to us?” Marcos stammered. “Don’t worry about it, they aren’t.” Briggs grinned. “How could they be?” He snapped his fingers. “I’ve got it. They already think Austin is going off the deep end when he told them about seeing you.” “Yea. So?” Parker added. “Maybe we can use that to our advantage. Hang on. I’ll see if Richards can arrange is so it looks like Austin killed himself.” Briggs laughed. “That sounds like an excellent idea.” Parker agreed. He opened the door to the OR. “I’ll go speak to Richards right now.” The instant there was only two left Russ made his move. He and his men rushed Briggs and Marcos. Two of the men took them into custody. Russ and the other three rushed into the OR Russ grabbed Parker while the other three grabbed for Richards. “Here.” Russ handed Parker over to one of the other three who wasn’t holding Richards. Then he quickly ran over to Steve. They were safe he felt It appeared Richards hadn’t gotten started yet. /////////////////////////// “Yes Russ. I know where it is. Rudy and I are on our way.” Oscar cried into the phone. ‘You’re sure Steve is alright?” “Yes Oscar from what I can tell he seems fine. I’ll wait here for you.” “Can I talk to him Russ?” Oscar wanted to know “No Oscar they have him drugged.” Russ informed them. “Rudy and I are on our way. We’ll bring an ambulance with us.” “That sounds like a great idea.” Russ stated. “I’ll stay right beside him.” Russ continued. “Don’t leave him for an instant.” Oscar ordered. “I won’t.” Russ hung up the phone then started his vigil at Steve’s side. “They found him?” Rudy asked when Oscar hung up. From what Russ says we found him in time. Russ says they have him drugged but other than that he seems fine.” Oscar grabbed his suit coat from the back of his chair. “He’s at Harold Clinic.” Oscar called back to Rudy as they left his office. “I know the place, it’s in Bethesda.” Rudy called after him. “Do you have an ambulance arranged?” “It’s all set. Let’s get to Steve.” Steve was just coming around as Oscar and Rudy burst through the Operating Room door. Rudy rushed over to him. ”Steve.” he called out. “It’s Rudy. You’re safe, you’re with us.” Steve slowly turned his head. He saw Rudy standing next to him and Oscar just behind. He nodded. His head then drifted back to sleep. “Rudy!” Oscar shouted “He’s just sleeping. I’m sure they gave him way too much of what ever it was. We just need to let him sleep it off.” “What about his emotional state?” Oscar was concerned. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” Rudy sighed as he lifted Steve onto the gurney of the waiting ambulance. //////////////////////////// Three days later Steve sat in Oscar’s office. “Well I’m glad to see your felling better pal.” Oscar said. “Yea Rudy says I’m one hundred percent. Look Oscar I have a favor.” “Anything Steve.” Oscar leafed through a folder on his desk. “I want to see Scott or maybe I should say Marcos.” “What ever for. Steve their plan was to kill you.” Oscar reminded. “I realize that. I just want to see my brother.” Steve sighed. “It really burns me Oscar that this even happened.” Steve was almost in tears. “I understand how you feel Steve. Ok I’ll allow it on one condition.” “What’s that?” Steve demanded. “You let me come with you. I’m not going to have this Marcos guy hit you over the head or something then try to assume you identity again.” “Ok but keep back. I’m just wondering if I can turn him around.” Steve wondered “Don’t count on it Steve.” Oscar cautioned. “I at least have to try.” Steve cried. “He’s my brother Oscar. Not just my brother we are twins.” “I see your point Steve. But Scott wasn’t raised the way you were. Steve” Oscar reminded. “The family that adopted him worked for the other side all of their lives. Scott has known nothing else. Come on though I’ll take you to him.’ An hour later Steve sat across from his own reflection. “What do you want?” His twin asked. “Nothing really.” Steve replied. “I just wanted to meet with you.” “Why?” His double wanted to know. “You don’t know, do you?” Steve pressed. “Know, know what?” His voice was full of disdain for the man sitting across from him. “Look, why don’t you just let me go back to my cell?” “Not just yet Steve pleaded. There are a couple of things we have to discuss. You look like me for a reason. I know you didn’t have surgery, this is just the way you look.” Steve commented “Yea, so what?” Marcos shot back. “My Birthday is Feb 5, 1942, when is yours?” “The same day. So what?” “Marcos, That was not the name given to you when you were born?” “Of course it was.” Marcos got up to leave the prison visiting area. “Your name was Scott.” Steve called after him. “No. As far as I know my name is Marcos.” He turned back toward Steve. Steve shook his head. ‘No, it was Scott.” “Ok so it was Scott.” Scott shouted “Scott, you and I are twins.” Steve tried to explain.” “Big deal. I suppose you want to be friends now or something. Listen Austin. I wish Richards had killed you and if I ever get out or here, I’ll finish the job.” Marcos stormed off. Devastated Steve stood and watched him go. “Come on Steve” Oscar said as he placed his hand on Steve’s shoulder. “It’s a lost cause. To many years have passed. You can never have a relationship with him.” “I don’t believe that Oscar.” Steve cried. “Deep down he’s my brother and always will be.” Steve sighed. “Come on let’s see if Rudy wants to have lunch.” Oscar suggested “Yea. I suppose.” He turned back toward the glassed in booth where Scott had been sitting ‘Maybe someday.” He commented. The End |

What a bittersweet ending! Steve is safe, but getting closer to his brother seems like it is a dead end. (Maybe this begs for a sequel...?) Thank you for a very absorbing - and very unique - story. |
