If we keep in mind that we're writing for a show that aired during the Family Hour in the 1970s, how much violence is too much violence? And should we even be worried about such things, as writers of fanfic since - as someone once pointed out - we can do anything we want in fanfic...even make them circus performers! (Even though she said that, I think she was a little surprised when...I took her up on it - and put Jaime on a tightrope - LOL!)

Still, back to the question I'm raising. What crosses the line, for you? (Should there even BE a line?) What about language? Characters in the 70's were (if I remember) allowed the mildest expletives. Is "Oh God" crossing a line? (Because Michael is about to say exactly that...)

There are certain things I would never be explicit about - not even in an 'M' story. I had a story about a serial rapist...but the actual act - NOT in my fanfic repertoire.

I've been watching a LOT of episodes, now that my VCR is (finally!) hooked up. Haven't heard a single 'damn' or 'hell'. Oh well, using them anyway when needed. QUESTION: does this language offend anyone?

Are you kidding. My brother throes the 'f' bomb every other word. 'Damn' and 'he'll are nothing. Of course I can't speak for the rest of. The board...

Those words do seem to be tumbling out more in this particular story (than they usually do when I write).

QUESTION: does this language offend anyone?
These words don't offend my eyes and ears of not English native speacker. In my dictionnary, it is said that they are colloquials, not more and the French translation is far from swearing.

Anyway, I think that on the site, theres a control of what is posted. I remember to have post in a fanfiction a very bad word and only the first letter appeared with *** after.

Sorry about that, Bionika. There are only 3 or 4 words that I've set filters on. You must have accidentally hit one of them. (I'm guessing they don't translate quite the same from one language to the other.) So yes, there's a control on certain words here...but I set it myself.

Don't be sorry, Beth. it's normal that there's a control on it. I could edit the post using blast/shoot instead.

Speaking of "Allowed in the 70's"...how on Earth did they get away with "Sister...you'll have to get the flock out of here." ?

Could you explain me what is "wrong" with this sentence? Due probably to a lack of knowledge about English sentences, I see there nothing irregular huh?!?? I searched in dictionnary : a flock is ...a flock and there were a flock in the middle of the road in the serie...

"Flock" isn't the bad word. But the way it is used in the sentence "Get the flock out of here" makes it sound like another word...one that I can't write on this forum because it's blocked.

naer I've understand witch word you were meaning...and the dictionnary gave me the translation for the sentence with this word...Then, yes, it's more than colloquial...and Oscar couldn't have said or think that.

In the serie, the characters were very polite. (I remember Jaime complaining about having been given a ticket in very soft words...well, I think that it's not really the case when it happens to us in our real life!).

It was meant as a joke by the writers...and actually was pretty funny, in the off-hand way Oscar looked at the flock of sheep and delivered the line. I'm just really shocked that the Network censors let that one get by and didn't make them pull it. Especially since this was the era where (on the Brady Bunch, for example) if Mike and Carol were both in bed, one had to have one foot on the floor! The censors were quite strict. I'm glad this line got through, as it really made me laugh. Just very surprising.
