Yep, that is definitely a woodpecker. We have Gila (Hee-la) woodpeckers out here. They look very similar to this little guy except that they only have a red crown instead of it going down the back too. Chatty fellows (think the seagulls from "Finding Nemo" -- Mine, mine, mine -- and you'll get the gist), particularly at 6 or 7 o'clock in the morning. They can be destructive too, unfortunately. Our neighbor had to do a couple of thousand dollars of repair on their house because the woodpeckers tore up everything around their metal flashing on their roof trying to make nests. Apparently it was a real mess. But when they aren't up to malicious mischief, they do make me laugh because they are so chatty. |

The woodpecker comes back nearly every day now; I recognize his call. The feeder is very low, though, even lower than my window, so I have to get up and sit on the window ledge in order to see him. Not a problem for me (most days, anyway) but if the movement of me getting up there catches his eye, it scares him away... and I want him to always feel safe and welcome. There's plenty of suet in my fridge and freezer for him (and his bird friends) and I'll happily buy more if needed. |

I can't put up my hummingbird feeders anymore because the woodpeckers think they're for them. The ones I've got here are kind of audacious. I'll pop open the blinds when they're on the feeder and they'll look at me, surprised, but not surprised enough to fly away from the hummingbird feeder. If I go away, they'll usually hop onto the house's brick facade and start tapping out a territorial rap. So when I open the blinds, I'll tell them to go away (especially if it's 6am), which usually gets their attention but not enough to fly away, usually just gets them argumentative. So I'll rap on the window and say, "Yeah, I'm talking to you, buddy!" That's usually when they take off, somedays for the rest of the morning, a lot of days for about 15 minutes and then they're back at it again with the feeder. |

There's a robin's nest under the awning over my back door. The robin has been there on-and-off for what seemed like a l-o-n-g while. This morning, I was looking outside just as she was returning to the nest with something in her mouth... and suddenly half a dozen tiny little wide open beaks rose up to meet her. SO CUTE! |

Just had a Harris hawk (I think) hanging out on the telephone line in the backyard. The songbirds and doves were making themselves scarce, no surprise there. What was a surprise was a Cooper's Hawk (about 50% smaller than the Harris hawk) divebombing and harassing him till he took off as if the Cooper's Hawk was saying "You're in my territory and it's ticking me off! Scram!" And about 5 minutes later, the Harris hawk did. |

I'm really glad I got that picture when I did! In the last several days, we've had some strong, heavy thunderstorm... and the flowers were all flattened and killed! |

What do I see from my window? Heat waves, lots and lots of heat waves. "Wind chill" at 7am was 85F and high today is suppose to be 112F. I hate spending pretty much the whole day cooped up in the house because it's too hot to do anything outside. Sighs. |

- - Wow! That is AWFUL! And quite dangerous to be outside; I'm glad you stayed in! How long is that weather supposed to last? (I'm really hoping you don't say until September! - - |

Nope, we didn't go out that day, but went out the next (when it was 110F) because the squirt and I were getting a little stir crazy, but to someplace nice and cool inside. Last really hot day is suppose to be tomorrow (06/23) with a high of 109F, then it's suppose to cool down to normal (which is usually 102F or 103F and yes, it's typical for this, meaning the normal weather, to last till September, even October) within the next few days. From what I've heard, having a few really scorching days helps bring the North American monsoon northward and there is already a forecast for monsoon weather as early as the end of this week and the beginning of next. Which means I should probably get anything that's going to blow around easily outside a bit more secure because if a haboob comes through, there might be a few things I end up waving bye bye to that I really didn't want to do. |

SNOW!!! Out my front window, out my back door... SNOW. BLECH! And for our first snow of the season, is it a light dusting that looks really pretty... and then melts away? NOPE! We are getting socked, big-time! A 'healthy' covering already on the ground and it's still coming down! Ick. Yuck. Blech! UGH!!! Gee, thanks, Mother Nature. - - |

Well, if it's any consolation, I think the forecast due to El Nino is suppose to be lower precipitation and warmer than normal for your area, so you might not have as many snowstorms like this one this winter as there normally would be. Though if you normally get 30 storms like this and lower would be, say, 25, I could see how it wouldn't seem like much of a difference. :/
