Well, if it's any consolation, I think the forecast due to El Nino is suppose to be lower precipitation and warmer than normal for your area, so you might not have as many snowstorms like this one this winter as there normally would be. Though if you normally get 30 storms like this and lower would be, say, 25, I could see how it wouldn't seem like much of a difference. :/
That's actually VERY good news; thank you! I think last TWO winters were worse than normal - in terms of both snow AND cold - because there were several times we couldn't get to the pain doc... and once, he was snowed in himself, at a conference in Chicago. While I dread those half-hour car rides, I'm on the sort of meds that cannot be called in or faxed to the pharmacy; if we can't ge to the pain doc, then I don't have my meds. And even more frightening... if my pump goes empty, it is a medical emergency! So yes, a milder winter would be a true blessing.

BTW, I know you probably haven't gotten a lot of snow so far this winter, Beth, but I'm also hoping you haven't floated away either...

We got hit pretty hard this past Monday, with snow, ice, sleet, high winds that all seemed like they'd never let up! My daughter's plane (back to NYC) just barely made it out before the storm hit; it almost looked like they'd be delayed or even canceled. They made it out safely though - and when she got home, no snow at all there; just a whole lot of WET. It wa a really ugly day or 2, weather-wise, but - knock on wood - not nearly as rough of a Winter as the last few have been!

I had heard on the news that the governor of Illinois had issued state of emergencies for several counties in south and central Illinois (river flooding), so I was a bit worried for you.

I think we have less snowbirds this year too, because it's been relatively mild in the northeast quadrant of the US. IIRC, Buffalo has yet to get any real snow for the winter or didn't get until sometime in December. Usually people from there are saying that summer is someday in July and the rest of it's winter.

Glad to know your daughter got back okay. I remember starting one spring semester at the UofA (want to say 1995) where many of the classes I had started with about 5 to 10 people short because of blizzards back east.

We've been very, VERY lucky so far this Winter - knock on wood! We did have 3 or 4 days when the rain never let up at all but thankfully our rivers were quite low when it started, so it never approached the level of what happened further south. Usually by now, we've had several VERY heavy blizzards and subsequent melts and run-offs... and last year, we had flood warnings and watches through most of the Winter and well into Spring - so this time we were quite lucky, indeed.

From my bedroom window, I see the tiny purple flowers that are the first heralds of Spring running alongside my house. The iris stems have broken through the topsoil. And on the ground... a light blanket of SNOW!

A couple of weeks ago, the hyacinths and irises outside my back door were already beginning to bloom... but then we had an overnight frost and a dusting of those awful white flakes! It was over as quickly as it began... but it was enough. There are tall green stems - strong and healthy - lining the end of the sidewalk. There are no flowers - not even the tiniest bud. wdc

I've got bearded irises out front. They (irises in general) can be tricky. If it's too hot or cold for them right before or just as they are beginning to bloom, they just go phht!

It had been cool enough for a couple of weeks for my orange ones to bloom, but then we had a heat wave for about 3 or 4 days and the white ones never bloomed. Bearded irises can be even trickier because if you water them too much or too little, they won't bloom. I only water them once every 7 to 10 days and it's still a crap shoot on whether they'll bloom in spring or not. They're very pretty when they do, but they sure can be a hassle to get them to bloom.

Mother Nature was good to me, after all! A few days ago, there were still tall, barren stems. It appeared that the late freeze had killed off the irises for the year because the early (still small) blooms were gone and so were the buds. Today, I happened to glance over there while throwing out my garbage... and there were three bright purple buds - tall and strong and BEAUTIFUL!

And now there's no risk of frost.

This should perhaps go under GRRR-ARGH... but on closer inspection today, I discovered my landlord mowed over the hyacinth stems, giving them no 2nd chance at all. :'(

5 roses in my rosebush ...and there's at least 6 or 7 rosebuds.
(I'm happy because while cutting dead branches, I cut by mistake a big vivid one and feared to have no roses this year. It seems that my rose tree hd forgiven me!).
