Simply rose. They make five rose spots on the green leaves of the laurelplanted behind and it's very nice. I'll take a picture. Bionika |

After lunch today, I decided to clean out my fridge. I bagged the stuff that was going in the trash (the can is right next to my back stoop). I opened the back door... opened the screen... one foot was in the air, poised to step carefully onto the slanted stoop... but WAIT! IS THAT...? NOO-ooo! Dear God, I have a vivid imagination! Stop being silly; it's a stick, nothing more. But then... THE 'STICK' RAISED ITS HEAD!!! OMG, OMG, O! M! G!!! I pulled my leg back into the kitchen so fast and so hard that my back slammed into the kitchen counter! Didn't matter, though; I was SAFE - and the slithery monster with murder on its mind wandered off to find its next victim... THE END (I hope!) - |

Wow! How long was this snake? Is it common to see some where you are living? Bionika |

My house is on the river (on TWO sides) so snakes are to be expected... but I've lived here for 3 years and have never seen one before. Hard to say how big it was because it was in the crack between the back stoop and the door, so only its head and part of its body was showing but it was definitely not small! UGH! Yuck! ***Shiver!*** - |

I understand you. Some years ago, a small (circa 5cm) snake was slithering on my cars' wind screen (but unreachable by the wipers) and I'd been afraid, wondering what I should do when I'll stop till I realize that I was completely stupid: he wouldn't jump on me. However, I was relieved that he had left my car before I had to stop. Bionika |

I still don't want to use my back door - LOL! Only used it to take our garbage anyhow, as they have a can there for me. The stoop is too sloped to use just for going outside (or to a car... or the mailbox). But the remainder of the garbage cans are just around the other side of the house, easily accessible from the front door. ![]() - |

Bionika, those roses look very similar to some roses we have at a test garden here which are called "Queen Elizabeth". They might be "Elle" roses, but I think "Elle" tends to be more peachy in the center. I've wanted to get one of those roses for my garden because they're one of the few that seem to flourish and not flowers that wilt or burn when it's above 38C outside. Beth, it might be a garter snake. My MIL gets garter snakes in her backyard all the time. (We have a lot of roadrunners and hawks around here and that tends to keep the reptiles pretty well in check.) They do really seem to like hiding in nooks and crannies. There was one that slithered down a 1" PVC pipe on her patio and just hung out there for a week. If you're really worried, though, I'd probably call animal control to remove it. |

Thank Inanna for your information. I don't know which type of rose they are : they were already in the garden when I bought the house 12 years ago. What I know is that they are extremly hardy . They were very close to the barbecue and sometime should have feltflames's hot. I haven't the barbecue since a long time now but they are nearly included in the laurine and they are still there, giving me flowers years after years. Bionika |

Mud and grass - cold, mushy, non-green grass. One thing is highly noticeable by its absence: SNOW. We don't have any. This is NOT a complaint - LOL! This has been one of the mildest Wisconsin winters that I can remember, in terms of both snow and frigid temps - and my climate-sensitive body is VERY grateful for that! |

Yeah, I've seen an article or two that Chicago is going through a snow drought, that they haven't had any snow (or snow that sticks) for all of January and February. |
