Should you be interested...there is a website that I go to when I see a bird I'm not familiar with call whatbird dot com. They've got a really great search engine where you can narrow down the identity of the bird by location, size, color, and more. I've found it extremely useful.

Ooh, that's very cool! I'll have to check it out; thanks!

I've got a huge yard here, with lots of tall, healthy trees... but for as many trees as we have, there don't seem to be a lot of birds. I'm thinking maybe the trains scare them away.

I saw my first robin of the year a couple of days ago. And today when I looked out the backdoor window, the hyacinths were starting to bud!

I don't think I've ever had the opportunity to see a robin. I have a feeling if I did my reaction would be along the lines of "Wow, that's the biggest, most well fed finch I've ever seen...wait...what is that?" :D Robins are supposedly here, but I have a feeling I'd probably have to go up into the mountains to actually see them, probably gets way too hot for them down here in the basin. Hyacinths are bulb flowers also, correct? I always liked that color of purplish blue.

Yes, hyacinths are a bulb/ annual. The ones coming up here are yellow, pink and purple.

Yea! It actually rained today! Real honest to goodness, leaving puddles on the ground type rain! Yea! c8654 Last time it did that was January.

Saw two Cooper's Hawks too. Thought they were doves at first until I saw the dove on the nearby phone line freak out and take off as they flew over. That's when I noticed the tails were a lot longer than a dove's and the wings were straighter. Fortunately for the dove, they seemed more interested in riding the wind than looking for lunch.

I have some pictures of some juvenile Cooper's Hawks that I stumbled across one morning walking on the University grounds. I was able to get within 10 feet of one because it was far more interested in its breakfast than me shooting pictures of it. I'll be happy to post some if I can dig them up.

Heard more than saw a great horned owl last night. He was hanging out on our telephone pole. We kind of guessed this may have been the reason why Wedge may have skulked into the house a few minutes before. Even though he's way too big of a "meal" for any of our feathered visitors, I can understand if he felt like he might be pressing his luck and wanting to come in.

I was out walking my daughter on the street above us this afternoon. We walked by one house and I was admiring the front yard, which is surrounded by trees but has a little pathway into it and I noticed the nice shady spot it created in the middle. And then I noticed the javelinas that were taking advantage of said shady spot. Then noticed said javelinas starting to get up because they heard me. And even though they are herbivores, I'm still tugging at my daughter and saying, "Well, moving right along..." Fortunately I don't think they freaked when we reached the end of the street and I tried to pick her up and she screamed because she didn't want to be. ytrw

What do they look like, Bionika? I've seen cliff swallows from a ways off when my MIL and I took a little detour through Lake Havasu City on a road trip. They had nests plastered all along the underside of the old London bridge. From that distance, they sort of looked like a cross between a sparrow and a swift. I know they are more colorful than either of those birds, but I was too far away to be able to really see any particular bright color on them.
