I definitely agree with you, but the OSI as a whole was pretty biased, too. Where were all the female operatives....?

It was the 70's. Back then even the bad girls carried pocket books when they were robbing the banks:)

Wow - you've been digging through the archives!

BTW, lately I've watched four episodes which made me think Oscar isn't a chauvinist. Other than his initial hesitation, he sees Jaime as totally capable, and other than calling her Babe and giving her kisses, he's not patronizing or fresh, nor does he refer to her as "a lady" or a "girl". He does pretty well for a 70's guy.

Of course I have to agree with you.

I was thinking how great (and amazingly subtle) it was to have the subtext of Oscar's unacknowledged feelings running through that show - subtle enough that some viewers wouldn't even see it, and definitely there for those who did. Usually everything in shows of that era was laid out so that you couldn't possibly miss it - they practically plastered all emotions onto billboards - so I think it's kind of great that TBW left something unsaid, but still there.

You put it so nicely!

Here is the ultimate in chauvinism....and...sniffle...it comes from Steve!

Steve: Now Jaime's going to be my wife, and I'm not gonna let you run her life like... like...

Oscar: Like we agreed?

Steve: What?

Oscar: I told you it was gonna be like this, pal. I agreed to make Jaime bionic - with strings attached, remember?

Steve: I know, Oscar, but...

Oscar: I came through for you, pal. How 'bout you backin' me up now?

Steve: Oscar, I know what I said, but I can't let her do it. Can't you see? I can't!

I think he was just worried for her life. You can't really blame the poor guy for that. I wouldn't have blamed Jaime if she had not wanted to see Steve in that line of work either. Besides the danger, they wouldn't have had time for much of a life together if they were always going on missions. Especially, if they were separate missions.

I agree, he was definitely worried, and you can't blame him for that. It's his assumption that she's not ready and worse that he is entitled to make that decision for her that is the problem. If he had just begged Oscar not to send her that would have been fine, but he had no right to say "I can't let her" - like she needs his permission!!

Of course she points that out to him and I think he realizes he doesn't have much choice.

I still love where she gently moves Steve's arm out of her way, telling him "You can't speak for me" - priceless!

On the other hand...(the quote is approximate)

"On paper, you look like an agent. Looking at you, I'm not so sure."

Would Oscar have said that to a man?

Which episode was that from? I don't think it shows he's a chauvinist, I think it shows he was smitten with her. IHBVK I agree with an earlier remark by messyhead. I thought they did a very subtle job with Jaime and Oscar. I didn't pick up on it when I was a kid and watched it, but as an adult... Wow....I love watching the chemistry - present in almost every episode (some more than others of course!)

The quote (probably not exact wording for the 2nd half) is from Angel of Mercy.

It means he thinks she's green and inexperienced and never even intended to become an agent, so he's worried she's not suited for the job. I don't think it's chauvinism. The man knows his secret agents - and she doesn't seem like one to him!
