One side of the coin

1.
Slowly she driftet back into conciousness...where was she? The smell indicated a hospital but she didn’t dare open her eyes. Deja-vu hit her. Too often. For a moment panic wellt up in her but she fought it down “Okay, hold on a minute” she thought. Then she realized that Chris was dead. Shot by a sniper. “oh god!” a small sob escaped her. Chris dead. How would she cope with that loss. “I’m glad it’s not Steve.” Woah! Now where did that thought come from? Here eyes flew open and she stared unbelievable at the white hospital ceiling. How the hell..?
Chris was dead and all she yould think of was that she was glad it wasn’t Steve? And then it hit her. Harder than any Fembot or Sasquatch could have done. It was like a tidal wave, but in slow motion. Her mind wheeled. It was overwhelming. As if she was in a dark room and suddenly someone pushed the switch and there was a blinding light. Memories she knew and didn’t know. Faces, situations, places….old yet new and then something happened that nearly took her breath away. All those unknown, hidden feelings broke up and loose and almost crushed her. She remembered. All of it. The feelings. The feelings, blocked by the amnesia she had after the skydiving accicent and the operations. After her…death. She began to shake. It was too much to take. She turned around and cried into her pillow, long and hard.

2.
Somehow she knew it would be a disaster, from the moment she got the phonecall for this date. Why did she say yes in the first place? That was so stupid! This guy was much too young and much too interested in his job and himself than in her. But somehow that didn’t matter. She tried to be friendly and was surprised how well she could act or was that guy just too ignorant in recognizing that she was bored to death? “Oscar, I’ll get you for that! Big time!” Yeah, she knew it was he who set this whole scenario up. She just didn’t know why. But she’d find out!
Much too soon so.
Suddenly her bionic hearing picked up a voice from the entrance she hadn’t heard in a long time, but knew it as well as her own. Steve Austin. Why was he here? Tabel for 2? Sure! The young woman was not yet here. Fits! Surely she was blond and was drooling over him. “Oh shut it!” she chided herself. “Just get out of here!” Meeting Steve was the last thing she needed now! Now that all the memories were still fresh and her inner turmoil hadn’t settled.
But fate had other plans and the end of it was that she fled through the back door after throwing Steve out the front window. She went straight home and cried. She was so confused! One part of her wanted to turn into Steve arms and never let him go and the other part wanted to slap him for retreating so completely and hiding away. After crying she felt into a restless sleep.

The next day she decided to run it off. All of it. Some days ago she had found a nice park, that was secluded enough to run bionically. On the way to the park she had to be careful not to crash into other cars because her mind was racing. Her feelings were tumbling. Over and over she replayed the scene in the restaurant. The shock and joy of hearing Steve’s voice. She should have known that it was impossible to sneak out of the restaurant through the front door with Steve sitting so close by. It should have been the back door from the beginning but then she had a date! How would that have looked like? She sighed and winced as honking from other cars brought her mind back to the traffic. “Dammit!” Despite everything it was good to see him again and to talk to him. But it was also too much. The throwing him out the window proved that! Oh, she was so sorry for it! She hoped it hadn’t hurt him and yet he had provoked it, hadn’t he? But he didn’t know of her inner turmoil. And instead of apologizing to him, she fled like a coward. Another honk told her that the trafficlight in front of her was green so she drove on.
Arriving at the park, she needed a few minutes to get herself together. “Oh, get a grip, Jaime!” she told herself, then took a deep breath and got out of the car. And then she ran as fast as her bionic legs could go…

3.
The meeting with Oscar was almost indispensable. It was nice, seeing him again and yet frustrating. Now that she had her memory and also her feelings for a certain person back, Oscar, who somehow knew that this would happen, told her to stay away from Steve! It was just not fair!! After all those wasted years of not remembering! The hell with all those spies and conspiracies and the hell with Oscar and the OSI! No, of course it wasn’t fair. Oscar wasn’t to blame. He also suffered, she could see it. He wanted to take the blame for what had happened to Chris and all. Poor Oscar.
After this short meeting she went home to shower and dress and went to work. Just to be kidnapped by those bad guys from Fortress, of whom Oscar had talked about. Inside she was furious. Threatening her with killing all those blind children. Yes, she was afraid. Things like that didn’t happen to her all day.
And then out of the blue there was Steve. Saving her from those guys. It felt so good to have him back. Feel him, and she hoped he didn’t notice it, but she clung a bit too long and too much to him, after the car drove off. They went to the same restaurant they met yesterday and talked. It was good and the same time it was difficult. Too much time had passed, but there was still hope. She could have kissed him, when he told her that he had let this candle burn to never forget her. How much did he suffer from loosing her? She could only imagine and her heart went out to him. But she couldn’t tell him how she felt. Not yet. The best was, they did take it slowly. Getting to know each other again. And so they parted.
That night sleep didn’t come easily for her. But not for bad reasons. The meeting fo Oscar and Steve played in her head over and over and over again. Those blue loving eyes of Steve. The fatherly caring of Oscar. She felt somehow complete. Now she could enjoy all of her feelings and memories without the slightest doubt. It was all real.
And surely she would go to the soloflight of Steves son Michael, not only because she was doing him a favour or make him happy, but just to have another chance to see him again….

4.
It was a bright sunny day, perfect for a soloflight. A lot of people, most of them soldiers and Air Force men of course, had come together to watch. She mingled and made sure, she was not near Steve or Oscar, though she could hear them. "I'm glad you came, " she heard Steve say, "I apprechiate that." It made her smile and she answered "You're welcome." and felt a little bit silly because technically she was talking with thin air.
They all watched as Michael started and flew. Until the trouble. Ste didnÄt know exactly what went wrong, but she had the feeling that it was worse than bad. Time seemed to slowdowm while Michael tried to land and then crashed. "Oh my god." She couldn't move and just stare at the flames and smoke. "That's the way it also happened to Steve." something in her mind told her and this thought brought her back. Steve! Oh god! She tried to locate him, but there were too many people and she soon realized that the only thing she could do was wait. The sirens of the firebrigades and the ambulances ringed in her ears. She stepped aside and went back to the car, when officers cleared the crowd. Of course she could hear all the was spoken and it was almost too much so she blocked it out. But not before she tried to hear to what hospital thex braought Michael to and drove there. She knew Steve needed her more than ever and she hurried. As soon as she saw him in that hospital corridor, she ran to him and took him in her arms, soothingly whispering words of compassion to him. Oscar was also there and together they waited in front of the operation room. That was not the way she had wanted their reuinion to be. Not that painful. And after Oscar went back to the office, she stayed with Steve. How could she have left him. He was so helpless and vulnerable. Although she could only sit with him, but his thankfulness was in his eyes and that was enough.

And finally the rest of this story!! Thanky for being patient!

5.
So it went almost without saying that she was the one, who took care of Michael after the bionic operation. Who else than someone that had lived through the same pain and trauma could have helped? Of course it had to be a secret first. And surely she didn’t it only for Michael, but also for Steve and Oscar and Rudy and of course for herself. It was another way to repay the debt she had to all the men, who saved her life over and over again.
Luckily Michael came around. His first mental rejection of the Bionics lessened with time and he grew confident, for which Jaime was very grateful. And of course there was the thing between her and Steve. Was she so obvious that Michael picked it up that quickly? Of course he told her how his father had talked about her and the boy even had the balls to tell her that she was in love with Steve! The rat! Well it was true but it was also complicated and she quickly changed the subject back to his training.

6.
Then came the kidnapping of Michael which lead to another meeting with Steve on his boat. She felt for Steve, but when he told her, that Rudy was also kidnapped, her old will of fighting was back! Enough was enough! Tough she was afraid, she somehow knew it would be allright at the end. All the right people were involved on the good side and the banter between her and Steve felt familiar and good. Still she wanted to do this newfound relationship or friendship between them to develop naturally and hoped that Steve would understand.

7.
After the rescue of Michael and Rudy and the destruction of Fortress there was a little get together at the harbour and everything fell into place. It felt natural to be in Steves arms again and she even risked to imagine that maybe one of these days, he would ask her to marry him. But for now it was enough.

End

Thank you so much for bringing these forward again. You are especially good at letting us see what's going on in the characters' heads. I'm also hoping that by posting there, you're 'warming up the engines and plan to write more!

Thank you for adding to this story, somehow I missed it before. I like seeing these scenes from Jaime's point of view. I hope to see a sequel!

It's nice to see things from Jaime's perspective in regards to getting her memory back, the confusion and pain she must have felt. I like what you did here by getting into Jaime's brain. Applause!!! c8654 c8654 c8654 c8654 c8654

Now I'll go into a bit of a tirade, but not at all based on your writing or characterization. Please forgive my critique of the reunion situations...

I believe there were so many missed opportunities in the bionic reunion movies. I get the feeling there was much haggling and negotiation about was was included and excluded from those movies, especially given time constraints- how much can a story convey when only a certain number of minutes are set aside for the airing? - So THIS is why I really like how you elaborated on Jaime's points of view.

The 2 purposes for the sequals- 1. To give a little nostalgia to the audience, and 2. To introduce a character (Michael), for the potential to create a new series.

If you know me and what I've posted in the past, a dislike the idea of Michael. I take issue in the way we are introduced to the character of Michael. We, the nostalgic audience, are led to believe that he was the product of a(nother) "lost love " of Steve's, and that Steve was an inattentive absentee father- These things run counter to my concept of the true character of Steve Austin, that is, I believe that the Steve Austin I knew (and believed in- yes, a fictional character), would not have withheld this kind of secret and further, I believe that if he had he fathered a child, the real (though albeit, fictional), Steve Austin would be as involved as possible despite his obligations. I know it is all fiction the writers and producers of the reunion movies had their agendas, but the character, that is, the person of Michael goes against the grain of canonical SMDM and TBW. It's all fiction, so maybe anything goes, yet... I have trouble buying his introduction story.

This is not to take away from what you have written because I enjoy the delving into another's mindset as you've done here. I love that!

One further rant and then I'll be done:
It just makes me think a bit more about how the ideas for Michael's role really went down with the Hollywood types and how we, as the loyal audience, were to swallow all of this - And then that trail of thinking all leads me to speculate about what Jaime was thinking in regards to Steve's previous behavior (omitting a whole relationship and son to her/his family, and his lack of attention to said child), and what a meaty topic that would have been if, for instance, a pilot WAS ACTUALLY spawned and another series continued to air, with Michael Austin, as the lead as the new Bionic Man. Would then Steve and Jaime have made special appearances, and then what would have become of them as a couple should that have happened... What would Jaime have come to think. In the first reunion movie she was awfully understanding, but then what about all the questions of omissions??? And THEN Note: Michael was never included in "Bionic Show Down" or "Bionic Ever After". No mention. Like he never even existed. Further script writers down the line seemed to scrap him completely. Maybe they knew this scenario of a Michael character was pretty unlikely...

I totally agree with you on the notion of the introduction story of Michael. That also did strike me as odd and more so. it was totally out of character for Steve! And yeah, they made Jaime very much understanding, so the film could be smooth on that subject. thouh i do love the reunion movies they do have their flaws, but well, there are so much pple involved in a script, that the actors have to do what it says, mostly, otherwise there are no movies. ^^

oh yeah, and thx again for you praise. i am still unsure with writing in english, but with so much positive feedback, i'm happy that my written english isn't that bad. ^^ and it spurs me on to write more in this foreign language ^^ thanks a lot :) ytne ytne

I applaud your English! I have taught and tutored English as a Second Language (ESL), or English as an Other Language (ESOL), as well as general literacy here in the US. I applaud you- and ALL the non-native speakers (for instance Bionica, and I think, El Zorro)!!! I'm always impressed that someone can express themselves this way in English so clearly on a site like this - (that is, writing stories). Just see me try my Spanish and you will LAUGH and LAUGH. English is an INCREDIBLY difficult language to master because of all the crazy rules and all the exceptions to those rules. YAY, for all of you!!! c8654 c8654 c8654 c8654 c8654

Thank you LuvNvrNds.

In fact, writing stories isn't too difficult (well now) because I can check words and read again. When I post, I do more mistakes because I don't check the way I do for stories.

Spoken English is still very difficult for me. For instance I went in London last summer the underground employee understood very well my question about the Oyster card but I didn't understood her answer about the way I should use the machine! ;)

As my company has been bought by an American one since beginning of the year, we have now lot's of call conferences with colleagues all over the world and each time it's horrible for me because I catch one word on three and colleagues usually asked me to repeat when I speack.
Well I consider it as "spoken English lessons " and it would be a way to improve. (When I began to read stories on the site, I had to use often dictionnary and make misunderstandings but now it's OK).
