A problem is we don't know that much about him and what we do know is all quite positive. :)

That's true - we don't know a lot about him.

I remember in an early SMDM Oscar snottily says "I don't deal with nobodies." replying to some comment Steve made, suggesting he was sort of elitist. This was during the time they were warming him up, after starting him out in the series being a chilly character.

They seem to have dropped that personality trait later, as I don't get a sense of him being snooty in any other episode.

I don't think I've ever seen that one... Didn't Darren McGavin play Oscar, or the boss at least, in one of the movies... I don't think I've EVER seen Oscar be snotty...businesslike and maybe brusque, but not elitist... What happened in that episode???

I can't remember which episode it was - I only noted the comment. I was shocked as it didn't seem like him...or it didn't seem like the later Oscar, anyway.

Darren McGavin was Oscar's boss Oliver Spencer, a chilly, unpleasant character, and then he disappeared and Oscar was retroactively set up his second in command who became first in command, and the guy who dreamed up bionics, even though there was no sign of him in the 1st SMDM movie.

So when they introduced Oscar he was a little bit more like Spencer, and he got friendlier and friendlier as the series went on.

Yes, Oscar was somewhat cold and calculating in 'Wine, Women and War', his first appearance. In the book of the episode, speaking of Rudy, it says: 'Goldman's persistent inclination to treat Austin as a machine angered the doctor.'

That certainly wasn't Oscar later in the series.

It seems they started out with Oscar being similar to Spencer but his character changed quickly and he became much more friendly and pleasant.

I wonder if Richard had anything to do with it. If Oscar has stayed that way, I doubt the series would have lasted - especially with BW... If only he had been just a little MORE friendly... :) :)

I wonder if Richard had anything to do with it.

I suspect he did. He's much more interesting when he is allowed to be warmer. I actually think that's his strength. He's always playing super serious types, when I suspect he's really a bit of a goof, or if not a goof, affable.

He seems almost playful in some of his interviews...and in the blooper reel. It HAD to have been more fun playing Oscar the way he did than as he was initially. He does seem the serious type in most of his western roles, though there are a few exceptions... He was a bit goofy in I Love Melvin as well....

I'm sure you are both right. There was an interview during which Richard said he intentionally played Oscar differently in BW and SMDM, so I imagine he had a lot to do with making the character much warmer after the pilot episode of SMDM.

I would've loved to have seen Spencer and Oscar butt heads - at least for a couple of episodes. Would've made a great point/counterpoint!

Can you imagine if it was over Jaime somehow? I'd LOVE to have heard Oscar defend her and stand up for her... IHBVK

I had him butting heads with Hansen over Jaime a couple of times. (It was lots of fun to write!)

I think the biggest flaw I found with Oscar was that he was just plain dull. Nice but dull. Maybe it had more to do with the character not being developed enough, but he just came across as a boring guy to me. Certainly not the kind of guy that would interest most woman in their 20's. RA seemed much older then his 40 something years. Especially when you compare him to alot of the 40 something actors that are popular today like Brad Pitt for example.

You can't compare a man in his 40's in thirty years ago to a man in his 40's today, for heaven's sake! Society wasn't so youth obsessed as it is now, so comparing him to Brad Pitt is totally unfair. Besides, call me crazy, but I'd still pick him over Brad Pitt.

Brad Pitt is older now than Lee Majors was in the series, but Lee seems way older. Not only that, Brad Pitt dresses way better than Steve and he's probably not nearly as sexist as Steve is. What kind of woman in her twenties would date Steve now? He looks like a dinosaur. See what I mean about not judging a 70's character by modern standards? And especially comparing him to Brad Pitt??!!!

Oscar seems quite modern in his attitudes. Besides, to me, he's not dull, he's quiet and subtle. What's the matter with him? He's smart, he's kind, affectionate, occasionally playful, and has a great sense of humor. Seems like a guy you can trust and count on.

As for whether a woman in her twenties would be attracted to him, it kind of depends on the woman, doesn't it?
