Grrr - it happened again! My last story was shorter than they've tended to be lately, and still the hits drop off in the middle. I guess it's flattering that people take the time to read any of it, but it is so-o-o frustrating! The first person to read "Trapped" on fanfic read the first and last chapters only! What gets you hooked enough in the first page of a story to keep on reading? Or, looking from the opposite direction, what would turn you off enough to make you NOT keep reading....? |

All mine drop in the middle too, B4E. I think it's a matter of time - people don't have a lot of it, and there's a lot of stuff to be read out there! I worry on fanfic that people sometimes only scan most of what they read - but I try not to think about it too much! And I think you were right awhile back when you said that some sex in the middle really makes a difference! Anyway, I puzzle over the same stuff. One thing I wonder about is that if we're fairly sure the heroes are going to come out all right in the end, where is the suspense? It has to come from a particularly crafty and interesting plot, and those are tough to think up! I'm a long way from figuring it all out, and I could go on and on musing about it, but ... I won't. |

I love all the stories about Steve and Jaime. I'll read them from beginning to end. Sometimes I re-read them. When I'm at work and if I have time I check to see if a new story has been posted and what I do then is scan through it to see what it's about and theread it after I get home, mostly before I go to bed. In other words, a good bed time story. |

Building on something Soxs93 said, what would grab you enough to make you want to re-read a story...? |

It's certainly not difficult to find out what stories I read first. For me it is the romance and the tender moments with J & ? (guess who) which attract me and these stories I read over and over again - not in every case do they need to have sex in it although I like the steamy ones in general. You all write good stories so don't worry. I really appreciate reading them. You are right when it comes to the time issue. Time is rare. Many readers just quickly search for their favorite stories. They do not need to be that long. It is also good to have many short ones of a certain theme, for instance. As I have seen some of you guys at this website, I think that all the stories relating to Bionic Woman at fanfiction.net should/could be incorporated into the Bionic Project site. This way we could have everything under one roof. The same would apply for the OSI Headquarters. Maybe. But the administrators of these two webpages would most likely feel offended. |

Well, here is a link to the Bionic Woman stories on fanfiction: http://www.fanfiction.net/tv/Bionic_Woman/ Linking to OSI Headquarters is unfortunately (due to circumstances beyond my control) not going to be possible. |

I will have to agree that there is just so much to read on fanfic and not enough time to do it. I know I've started stories and have forgotten to get back to them. I know you are against partial posting, but I think it brings people back to the story. Every time you add a chapter, it is put back on top of the list of stories. Either way, I believe someone (not saying names) once said something to me along the lines of writing stories is about personal value and the joy in writing and not the ratings. You should write a story to make yourself happy, to really please yourself, and not to please others. I don't know, but I do believe someone once told me that...... Your stories are really good. You are a very talented writer. Don't worry about the number of hits on fanfic.

Oh, but speaking of romance scenes in stories... A good romance scene in a story is an attention getter, but it has to be done tastefully. I have been completely turned off of a story when it gets way too graphical or not right for the characters. Like I have been known to say in the past.....there is a major difference between making love and just having sex. I don't want to read about just having sex if you get my drift. |

Thank you so much! And I really don't worry about the number of hits a story gets, but it concerns me when there is a huge, dramatic drop in the middle. Maybe with the longer stories, it is better to post them a few chapters at a time... |

I'd say that depends on the chapter! I have to admit that I kind of like shorter chapters, though I'm incapable of making them myself. I had a thought about the middle-of-the-story drop-off - I think that the numbers in the middle of the story represent the actual, genuine, committed readers, and that the high numbers at the beginning and end are due to skimmers. I'm wondering about the merits of posting chapters one by one, like you do here. If the story is good, you get people hooked, and they also review chapter by chapter. Could be fun to try. |

I posted this last one on fanfic a few chapters at a time, to see what it would do for the middle-of-the-story dip, and it did seem to help a little bit, but there were still people who skipped chapters. Can't win 'em all, I guess. It did get more reviews this way, but several of the people who read my stuff semi-regularly have let me know before that they hate TBC stories...and didn't hesitate to remind me when I did it again this time! One big problem with partial posting is that you're stuck with the details in the part you've posted...even though you may find you want to change them later. |
