What about finished ones? Does it ever bother you that after all that thought and time and effort your audience is 3.5 people...most of whom don't take 30 seconds to comment? (Company on this board excepted, of course!)

That's why I'm several stories behind in posting them over at fanfic.

I don't post them on fanfiction because no one else reads them there - or at least they don't comment - maybe because mine are all Oscar stories. I like getting reviews - it helps to see what works and what doesn't work. I start LOTS of stories though that I don't finish - either they aren't gelling or I can't figure out what to DO with them.

This sort of brings me to the question - who do you REALLY write for?

I write to satisfy myself first, selfish person that I am, and then I hope my fellow Oscar and Jaime fans will like it too. And I'm disappointed if they don't!

I'm the same way - I can't write to please someone else - I write what interests me - and then if it's something I think others will like, I post it. If not, I don't. It makes me happy to write. I am MUCH more o a math person, and I like trying to improve myself in this way. But when do you think people don't like your stories???? You seem to get REALLY positive reviews.

I write for myself. Having others like it is a plus, but if I don't like it, it won't show up here in the first place.

And I'm grateful for those positive reviews. One way you can tell people don't like it is by stony silence...which could also mean indifference - you can't really distinguish between the two.

What bugs me though is all that traffic on fanfiction - you know people are reading, but they don't say anything - if they enjoyed it, is it too much to ask that they say so? Or even if they didn't enjoy it - it's just nice to know somebody is engaging with it!!

True, silence could mean indifference or that they don't like it. I am OFTEN accused of jumping to conclusions or making improper assumptions, and I'm possibly equally guilty with my stories. I don't mind constructive criticism, but when I don't get reviews, I always assume that it's because people don't like the story. If I'm really writing for me, I guess it wouldn't bother me, but I PUBLISH for others. However, it could be that some people are just too busy to read the story, or maybe too busy to write a review - even if they liked it.

I DO know when I first started reading fan fiction, I read several of your stories, B4E's Neesiepie's etc... They had obviously been published for awhile, and after I reviewed one or two, I stopped reviewing, because I thought the authors might not want to keep hearing me say how much I liked their stories - especially as the reviews would all be coming at once.

That's true - you write for yourself but you publish for others.

My stories feel a bit like junk food to me right now. Fun for the moment you're reading them (hopefully anyway) but without any lasting value.

Oh, you couldn't be more wrong. Your stories are very moving and emotionally gripping. They were what brought me over from the dark side in the first place. Not only are the story lines really touching and interesting, but your writing style is beautiful - the way you use the English language - weaving humor into a serious topic is simply wonderful. I reread every one of them at least once - and often times more than once. I am in awe of your writing talents - so if your stories are junk food, then I"m not longer eating healthy :)

I love all the stories about Steve and Jaime. I'll read them from beginning to end. Sometimes I re-read them. When I'm at work and if I have time I check to see if a new story has been posted and what I do then is scan through it to see what it's about and theread it after I get home, mostly before I go to bed. In other words, a good bed time story.

Me too!!!

;)

I re-read the stories all the time both on this site and on fanfiction.net. I'm guilty of not reviewing the stories on fanfiction. There are so many good ones.

I write because I love it, I love the characters and I know that, whether there is an acknowledgement or not, there are people out there who love reading stories about the characters too.

When I get home from work, I rush to my computer to find out if there is a new posting.

Messy, if your stories are junk food, I'm a junk food junky! Your stories are fantastic. Every one you've posted has been very believable and true to the characters. The latest story is a blast to read and read again.

That's very kind of you to say OJ - I don't mean to be fishing for compliments - I'm just thinking that the whole business is leaving me feeling a little unsatisfied at the moment.

I suppose I should get a lifetime of satisfaction just for having brought you into the light!

I KNOW you aren't fishing for compliments, but I can't imagine why you aren't satisfied with your stories. Certainly there are limitations by having to write fanfiction instead of regular fiction, at least if you want to stay within any semblance of the bounds of canon. So no, you haven't written anything Tolkein-esque, but your stories are excellent. They make me think, they make me laugh and they make me cry. They move me. They stick with me - long after I've finished reading them. You take the characters and insert them into startlingly realistic scenarios, delving into emotions that can sometimes be uncomfortable to deal with, but leave me feeling richer afterwards.

So, while you may be questioning your own satisfaction with your writing, please don't underestimate the impact it has on others - and it's ME that should be glad I was brought into the light :) I like it here.

Building on something Soxs93 said, what would grab you enough to make you want to re-read a story...?
I have just discovered the fan fiction and would have to say that what keeps me reading is the angst and cliff hanger ending to a chapter. I definitely do not skip a chapter if there is a cliff hanger ending. I am a huge fan of the hurt comfort stories too!
