I've only ever used a PC. How is it different?

The way it's organized is different - you don't have the start menu and then programs and stuff off of it. The way the windows are displayed is different - you can drag them around more easily and open multiple internet windows in different fashion, there is private browsing, and it's easier to screen grab and work with movies and photos. Just the feel of it is different. There are only two things I don't like. One, the Microsoft Office isn't as robust, and it doesn't have Access at ALL. Second, some sites don't let you download (or as easily) with a Mac.

Thanks for giving me a good idea of the differences. Does the same software work on both?

And virtually everything about the Mac is prettier. The asthetics are much much better. AND as a rule, they are bomb proof (minimum crashes) and almost virus proof.

What is Access?

You need Mac versions of all the software. It also comes with a bunch of really great programs. itunes, movie editing, photos, music making etc...

It's sounding better all the time! Access is the database application in Windows.

I don't know why Access isn't available on a Mac, nor are some of the more robust Visual Basic components in Excel. The free software included is amazing, and I find almost everything I want is available on the Mac. The virus-free part was one of the components that sold me. Now, I just like the way everything feels.

There's always the Apple version of Word called "Appleworks" - but I don't know how good it is. I dislike Word, but I couldn't get used to Appleworks. Mind you, I haven't made a huge effort with either, so my opinion is only worth so much.

I've heard of the "Works" package -they also have a spreadsheet program like Excel. For me, it wasn't an option, as my students use Word and Excel, so I needed those programs specifically. PLus, I use both of them ALL the time. I'm bummed I have to do my Access work on the PC. I'm sure Mac must have SOMETHING like it SOMEWHERE, but I haven't found it.

I'm pretty sure you can save Appleworks docs in word format!

I kinda thought you could too, but I didn't want to take a chance that down the line there was an issue. I was disappointed when I loaded that software that the menus were so different - it just makes it harder to assist students. Still, I've used Word and Excel for SOOO long, I thought it would be easier this way. I had also read a few negative reviews about Appleworks robustness, and decided to go with Office. Everything else though is just SO much nicer.

I am on a different computer tonight, and our banner is all bunched over to one side. Is it (I hope!) normal for everyone else?

Nope, bunched to one side, but I assume that's because of my resolution.
