It depends. "What a good girl," comes out of my mouth occasionally, if I happen to be thinking about it at the time. But old habits are very hard to break. I keep getting tripped up referring to both cats together, as I've always just called them 'the boys' or 'my furry little guys'. 'The cats' doesn't seem to have the same ring to it. Maybe 'The Dynamic Duo'...? An actual name change would be too confusing for her/him/Bubba... but he/she/Bubba is definitely unique! Bubba is one who just enjoys being spoken to (and often comes running from the other room at the sound of my voice). I think that as long as he (she?) is being held, petted, cuddled and coddled, I could call her (him?) 'my sweet little pink-and purple dinosaur and I'd still be rewarded with a purr. (Just tried it. And my sweet little pink-and-purple dinosaur is purring.) - - - - |

I just posted this as a status onFacebook... and thought that you might enjoy it here, too! DEAR ROCKY... You have learned a new trick... but I am NOT impressed! If you EVER jump up on the toilet again (when the lid is closed) and hit that shiny silver lever while I am in the shower, I will come out, dripping wet and - yes - naked. I will hunt you down... and show you exactly what I think of your latest discovery! (*Hint - I am NOT amused!) Love you anyway, though, Mama. - |

*Tap... tap.* The (slightly-over-sized) paw on my arm is very gentle - but will NOT be ignored. *Tap... tap-TAP!* I turn to look... and a cow-spotted head nuzzles up my arm until his chin rests on my shoulder. WHO is this sweetly-affectionate cat - and what has he done with Rocky? - - |

Oh Rocky, Rocky, Rocky! (*Hiding my amused smile with a hand to my mouth!*) We've lived here for two and a half years now, which means I've taken hundreds of showers here. (*Muffling a chuckle with my hand!) By now, it should be obvious that there is - quite literally - just ONE place to step when getting out of the shower. (*Giggling audibly!) If you INSIST on planting yourself RIGHT THERE and refuse to move when gently nudged by my foot, YOU ARE GOING TO GET WET! (*Laughing loudly and openly as a disgruntled and rather soggy cow-spotted yodel-opera artiste flounces away to sulk!*) - * - * - * - * - - * - * - * - * - - |

I have an HONEST question for all of those who are owned by a cat and who use scoopable litter. How often do you REALLY scoop that box? Not how often you'd like your neighbors/parents/friends to think you do it, or how often the vet recommends you do it, or even how often you THINK you should do it... but how often do you REALLY AND TRULY get out a bag and the scoop and actually scoop the box? Every day? Every other day? Once a week? Or even... every time they use it...? - - |

I don't use scoopable litter, I take off Darling's poops with a little scoop myself each time he goes to it, but I change the litter completely as soon as it starts to smell hard. Elise |

Hmm, when we had one cat, it was usually about every three days. When we had three cats, it varied from every day to every other day (every 36 hours) depending on how much they took care of things outside since they were all indoor/outdoor cats. We use to buy the big bags of baking soda from Costco to mix in with the litter to keep the smell down and had a small trash can with a lid right next to the boxes (one we had to scoop, one was had an electric scooper in it). The plastic bags from Target were the perfect size for the trash can. Lots of baking soda would get tossed in there too, to keep the smell down till trash day. My husband would always wear a mask when scooping because of his asthma. Even a small amount of dust particles sets him off pretty quickly. As far as completely switching the litter out, that was usually every 3 to 4 months. Yeah, I realize that probably sounds nasty. We would usually just scoop until the box was almost empty -- about every 2 to 3 weeks and then just add more litter and baking soda. I usually wanted it cleaned out more often, but when I was pregnant, I couldn't go near the boxes and frankly, my husband couldn't be bothered with dumping the remnants if they were going to be under 4" of new litter anyways (his reasoning). |

Thank you both for replying. The reason I asked is that Rocky - who used to use his litterbox ALL THE TIME, no matter what condition it was in - has started pooping on the newspaper outside of his box if there are more than 2 or 3... um... clumps or lumpsb in his box! It's not a reaction to losing Bubba because this started almost a month before Bubba crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I've never let the boxes get really terrible and when Bubba was still with us, I had ywo boxes. Scooped each of them every other day. Sometimes, if I was going through a really bad spell myself, I would let it go until the 3rd day... but almost never more than that. And NOW, although I don't have to scoopEVERY time he uses it, I scoop 1st thing in the morning (well... after my meds and a cup of coffee), once somewhere in mid-afternoon and then once more, about an hour before I go to bed. The plus side, though, is that the box NEVER smells... and while I used to empty the boxes once a month, all I had to do this month was pour a little more litter in there. Apologies to those who might've stumbled onto this thread while eating... but insight from others here is quite helpful and also very much appreciated! - |

I'm sorry, I think that I'm answering a little bit late. I'm doing quite like Elzorro : I don't use scoopable litter and I use a scoop for removing and wet blocks. During the week, I do it three time : the first in the morning before going to work, then in the evening when I come back from work and the last before going to bed. On week-end I do it immediatly after Syrah has done something in. I fill the tray with circa 3 cm of litter; of course each time I remove something the level is lowering and I change it when there isn't enough blocks for covering the bottom of the tray ==> I keep it two or three days. But If I' make a mistake in my estimation and if Syrah thinks that her litter is too wet (or perhaps smell too much) then I find some proops in weird places in the house like the garage. The weirdest has been in slippers. Since two weeks the place is behind the TV furniture (but perhaps it was because I gave her too much yoghurt and it hade made her sick and she had no time for running to her litter). Fortunately, it doesn't happen often but I knew some friends who really let very dirty litter (they had one tray for two cats) and the cats were used to use the bathtub as litter . Birk! Spot would do that too every once in a while. But she had a tendency to 'drop her regards' when she was miffed about something, usually being territorial toward Guy and later Wedge or feeling cooped up. She peed on my jeans once and then not more than 5 minutes later, attacked the back of my leg because a monsoon had rolled in and it was pouring rain and how obtuse could I be to not realize it was obviously all my fault that she couldn't play outside... But yeah, if we didn't keep the boxes relatively clean at all times (which was more often toward the end of her life because we were treating Guy for diabetes and he was peeing a lot, not necessarily many times a day, but when he was going, it was a lot), she would be the first to go outside the boxes. How old is Rocky? If he's in his teens, it could be his senses of sight and smell not being what they use to be and unfortunately, that may mean he's like many old men and missing the toilet he's aiming for.

I agree : Syrah is 16 now and sometimes she misses the tray. It's not a question of clean tray fresh litter or not : simply she put herself too close from a corner, her but is outside...and so is partly or completely her pee. Bionika |

That' a very good question. Rocky is 9. I would apply the getting older explanation to him... but only in that it's made him cantankerous and set in his ways... even in ways that are not exactly adorable. If the box doesn't meet his expectations, he'll stand in the bathroom doorway and yowl. Then - if i've ignored my last warning - he'll squat directly ON the newspaper to make his... um... displeasure very clear. - |

Syrah is since last sunday a star in cat's Paradise with Bubba and my previous cat Tipsy. She died at my mother home who was cat-sitting her as I was on holidays with my children. I carried her at my mother's home on friday and stoke her for the last time. On saturday and sunday she ate very few. Even her favorite meals (ham, yoghourt, tuna) didn't attract her. She ate only some fish my mom has done for her and had cough up some bile (since september she was suffering from hepathic deficiency). On the evening, she came back in the kitchen and my mom noticed that she had difficulties for breathing, so she opened the balcony for giving her fresh air. Syrah went outside and tried to hide. My mom understood that it was finish for her, she took Syrah and for her last minutes stoke her and spoke to her. I'm now back to my home and I miss her: nobody is there for greeting us and since september my first move when I went home was to go in the kitchen in order to check if she had eaten and if not to search her in the house...
