Rocky is in the kitchen, savoring a newly-discovered favorite snack - a nice big hunk of sweet potato!
-
I remember Guy waiting patiently (for him) for me to give him the lid to my yogurt in the morning so that he could clean it.

I really want to get another cat, but then I see my daughter running around, swinging her stuffed cat by the tail over her head (still, would have thought she would have started to grow out of that) and I think, "No, maybe not."
-

OUCH! How did your daughter act with Guy?

Ever since I got home from the hospital, Rocky has spent most of his time curled up at my feet. This was the first time I've been gone like that he hasn't had Bubba here to keep him company... poor little guy!

Somebody has taken care of him (food, water and may be strokes) while you were at hospital?

Yes. My Housing Case Manager and another case manager took turns. They both filled his food and water dishes and scooped his box. While most cats can go a couple of days without scooping, they knew that if there are too many 'lumps' (meaning more than 3 or 4), Rocky will go on the newspaper that surrounds the box instead.

When the 2nd lady came, she also sat and played with him, brushed him and cuddled him. I have a feeling she actually visited him every day - even on the days that the Housing Manager (her boss) had already been here. It was really comforting to know he was in such good, caring hands!

Sorry, just saw this. We had to put Guy to sleep when I was about 5 months pregnant with my daughter, so she never knew him. We weren't exactly sure what he had, but fluid was building up on his lungs and making it difficult for him to breath. The vets said it was likely either heart disease or cancer. We had been treating him for diabetes for about six months previous to this diagnosis, so we decided after a couple of days that it would be best for him if we put him to sleep. I think the clincher for me on that decision was that the vets said that medical treatment would merely extent his life, not put him in remission. Which made me think, "Okay, if that's the case, who would we be keeping him alive for?" Because wasn't not going to be for him. On the day we put him to sleep, my husband cooked him a turkey breast because that was his favorite. So he had a very nice last meal. A vet that made house calls came to the house to put him to sleep, so he was home surrounded by loved ones when he went. His death was hard for us for a while afterward.

Spot, OTOH, developed some type of upper respiratory infection when my daughter was around a year old. Toward the end, I could tell she was really suffering. One cold winter afternoon, I saw her with herculean effort drag herself out to our upper patio and realized that she was looking for a nice quiet place to die. I really believe having to watch that killed a part of me. And watching her for the couple of days after that until I could convince my husband that it was her time was just torturous. So when we were able to get the vet out to put her to sleep a few days later, the emotion that I felt far and above the others was relief. She was no longer suffering. Her last couple of weeks is something that I really hope that I don't need to go through with a loved one again, two legged or four legged.

Wedge, our last cat, got ticked off at my daughter, who had been pulling at his fur, went outside one night at the end of May two years ago now and we never saw him again. We'd like to believe he simply found humans he was more willing to tolerate since we never came across anything that gave us proof that he passed away.

I've wanted to get another cat or possibly a dog, but my husband has been doing much better allergy wise without a pet in the house that he's been holding off on us getting another. So the chances of us getting one anytime in the near future is slim. My daughter loves "greeting" the kitties when we go to someplace like PetSmart (because it's right next door to another store that we actually need to shop in). Gotta see the kitties or it will be thermonuclear meltdown. XD

Oh, believe me, I'm more than ready to get another kitty or even a doggie. My daughter tends to roughhouse and I'm inclined to believe that a midsize dog like a shepherd, retriever, or setter would likely be able to handle, or at least tolerate, that better than a kitty. My husband doesn't like dogs though, so that presents a quandary as far as that goes. I've wanted to get another cat because even though he's allergic (as in asthmatic) to cats (and dogs), he's a cat lover and hasn't really let that get in the way from having cats for pets in the past. It's just after Wedge left that he noticed his asthma had cleared up a lot and so now if I mention the idea of getting a pet, he's usually saying no to it.

I love pets, but after I put my first cat to sleep when I was in college, I realized that I can love my pets oodles and oodles, my love wasn't going to keep them or me from the inevitable, the likelihood that I was going to outlive them. I think Wedge's disappearance has effected me most in the long run because he was only 2 1/2 when he went missing. Mainly because we don't know what happened to him. Is he alive, is he dead? We don't know and probably won't ever know. Guy and Spot, OTOH, were around 16 years old when we had to put them to sleep, so I've come to the belief with them that as their ends neared that they were aware that they had long, fortunate, and well loved lives with us. Those two I firmly believe are at peace, buried in a little pet cemetery next to my husband's childhood cat and another cat that his family had. We buried them with tags engraved with something along the lines of "We love you and miss you" and wrapped in blankets or towels that they would have slept on. They do have "gravestones" because they are buried in the desert, so all the cats have big volcanic stones (common for this area) on their graves so the coyotes can't dig them up. We have a circle of little stones surrounding the gravestones and the little cemetery is close enough to the family house that we can visit it if we chose whenever we are there. So even though I still miss Guy and Spot, I have a sense of closure with them that I don't have with Wedge.

I do think if we get another cat, it's going to be a "brown" tabby since Guy, Spot, and Wedge were all "brown" tabbies. That description is usually used for grey tabbies whose tummies are usually tan or brown. Grey tabbies that have grey, silver, or blue grey tummies are usually referred to as "blue" tabbies. Personally, they all seem like "silver" tabbies to me. :)

Inanna, I am SO sorry that my question brought up such sad and painful memories for you! From the way you'd phrased the post, I misread it and didn't realize your cat had crossed The Bridge. I do want to thank you very much, though, for sharing what you went through, as it may help others to see that sometimes the most loving (and yet the hardest) act of all is knowing when it's time for them to leave us. My Bubba left very suddenly, but I had to make the decision for his mother (breast cancer; surgery went well but she suffered edema afterward) and my wonderful, beloved tabby, Tigger (old age). You gave your cats the most comfortable and dignified end possible; right up to their last breath, they knew how very much they were loved.

That same love has brought you around to wanting a new cat - and that's a beautiful thing. PetSmart is a great way to go, as they often take in animals from the no-kill shelters so they can be re-homed. I wish you well in your search and hope you'll keep us posted when you do find a new (furry) family member.

Inanna, I wish you good luck for adopting another kitty, hoping he comforts you in your pain, I am sorry for Wedges, he disappeared so suddenly and you can't know what he had become, it is heartbreaking !!

Oh, no worries, really. I have pictures up of Guy and Spot and give them a kiss from time to time. I don't have a picture up of Wedge because the really nice picture I have of him was what we placed on his missing poster. I feel badly about not searching more when he went missing, that night that he did. It was about 1:30 in the morning when we started to look for him because my husband is a bit of a night owl and was usually awake to let him in. I had slept a bit, but woke up and Wedge still wasn't back. We looked around the immediate neighborhood but there was no sign of him. Our neighborhood is bisected by a main street and I had a feeling he might have crossed that to get to the other part of the neighborhood. Part of me wanted to get in the car to go look for him, but that would have meant waking up the little one to pile her into the car. And if you've ever had to wake up a baby that's trying to sleep through the night and multiple that by 10, that would have been my daughter's reaction. And it would have taken her forever to get back to sleep and I was exhausted as it was. So instead of going to search for him, we turned in for the night. I feel guilty about that and that's what I beat myself up about. Part of me feels that if I just sucked it up and went looking for him in the greater part of the neighborhood, he'd be with us now. I don't mind talking about my cats at all, truly. The only thing I feel bad about is not having done more to locate Wedge when he first went missing, but I'm never bothered by talking about them.

Yeah, the adoptions out of PetSmart are usually animals from the local animal shelter which is working it's way toward being a no kill shelter. The animals that they still put to sleep usually have a number of medical issues. Not sure if they have many or any unacceptable animals because they are a threat to humans. There's also a large number of rescue groups that step in to try to rehabilitate those animals so I would say the number of animals that get euthanized each year is getting smaller and smaller. I tend to go out to the theater's website every so often to look at the cats, but the turn around time for them is fairly quick. It's kind of unusual to see a cat that's been there for more than six weeks. So any cat that I might see and be interested in adopting is usually gone by the time I visit the site again. And I was told because PetSmart employees that if I ever saw a cat in the store on the weekend, to get it then because by the end of the weekend, the cats are usually all adopted out. His phrase was "They go like hotcakes on the weekend."

If you see one that you're especially interested in, can you call and ask them to put a 'hold' on it... or aren't they willing to do that? (The policy does seem to be different from store to store...)

Rocky and I are VERY excited to announce the arrival of his new 'brudder'/life partner - a very handsome 12-year old male named Black Out! He has long black and dark chocolate-brown fur, is very calm and sweet-tempered and just LOVES to snuggle! I am over-the-moon happy with this purrfect match - for Rocky and for me!
