There was a great British series about a detective with the Oxford police known only as Morse. He wouldn't tell anybody his first name. At the end of the series they finally told you his name was Endeavor! His father was a Quaker or something like that - some religion where they name their kids after virtues.

Horace is good. Oscar is a great name. I had a dog named Oscar when I was a kid. Now that old fashioned names are coming back somebody is bound to name their kid after him. I met a kid the other day whose first name was Rhett and his middle name was, yes, Butler.

Albert? Abraham? Levy? Hillel? Shimon?

Saul is always a good Jewish name...

Or it could be Samuel, and he never went by it for obvious reasons....

Pulling out a list of Bible names: Abraham, Isaac, David, Joseph, Benjamin, Joseph, Matthew, Elijah, Aaron, Moses, Joshua... But so many of these seem nice. How about Hyman like Hyman Roth in the Godfather.

Hmmmm didn't think about that one... Then again, it took me forever to guess that on the Seinfeld episode...Levy could be good. Very Jewish.

Ooh - Levi or Levy. I like that. Jewish and nifty at the same time. So much better than Hymie or Shlomo!

I could like either of those. Which one SOUNDS better? Maybe he could be related to Levi Strauss.

NOt a middle name, but in "One of our Running Backs is Missing" we find out his nickname is "Goldie" AND that he was a public prosecuter in the town a while back.

Goldie? And a public prosecutor? Meaning he's a LAWYER?

Totally missed out on that one!

Me too. Steve wanted to know if Oscar knew any bookies. Oscar pretended to be shocked, but then Steve says "you were the public prosecuter around here, you must know someone." Apparently Oscar was sweet enough to help this old buy out when he needed a break, and now he affectionately calls him Goldie... "He's a real great guy, Goldie" or something like that.... :)

My, he's been a busy boy...a career in the Navy, public prosecutor, Director of the OSI. I like the public prosecutor bit... and I suppose it would make sense that he would have a law degree.

Certainly as a director, it would be surprising....I always thought he had some sort of science degree to work for the OSI...It was a very cute scene.

Yes, I always thought of Oscar with a science background, especially with all the NASA connections. I never considered him being a lawyer. However the FBI used to require either a degree in law or accounting to be a 'special agent' so maybe it was the same for the OSI.

Has the middle name been decided?

So much for character continuity....

If he was Admiral whatshisface's right-hand man during the Cuban missile crisis (1962), he would have been 32 at the time...he said he joined Naval Intelligence to find out about Sam; I suppose he could have done that after being public prosecutor, but that's not usually a post you accede to in your 20's; plus I can't imagine him joining the Navy afterward....

Could he have gone in the navy, left in say 1964, prosecuted for a few years, and THEN joined the OSI? Maybe his undergrad was in science at Annapolis, and then he studied law while in the Navy....No wonder he never had time to date.
