Wow, OJ - sounds like you know some grammar! I have to go more by instinct, as a lot of 'grammar talk' is lost on me. Of course some grammar is just fusty and a hindrance to good communication. My mother used to cry out EVERY time Star Trek came on "To BOLDLY GO - that's a split infinitive!" It was SO annoying. And could she really tell me with a straight face that "to go boldly" was any better? There's a great line from Winston Churchill about dangling participles. He said "This is the sort of nonsense with which I will not up with put." |

I couldn't agree more, but then Winston had so many good sayings. Clearly, you have not carefully read my work if you think I am an expert grammarian. Honestly, I can't say I check for all of those things myself. I also feel that the phrase "TO BOLDLY GO", the way it is used, is more poetic....It is fiction writing, so I think we can all take a little literary license. When I had to write business documents, we would have to check all of that boring stuff - YUCK!!! That's why I always hated writing - it was WAYYYY too tedious. I guess my point was that while I think most of us agree the spelling, typos, misuse of common words are fairly egregious mistakes, other people (my English professor colleagues) wouldn't stop there. I just want to make sure other novice writers like myself don't get scared off completely because of criticisms about their writing. Most people are nice and offer constructive critiques, which if you can't take, you shouldn't ask for reviews. But there are some (not here) that just point out the faults without offering to show the author what to do to IMPROVE the situation. I love that I have been fortunate enough to receive constructive feedback, which I have incorporated into my stories... I am also posting the rest of my story today, as I suppose I am one of those deplorable people who string out their stories on a daily chapter basis. |

By the way, friends from other nations, you should absolutely IGNORE this whole thread if you are on this site and English is not your first language. The fact that you're here and you all write and express yourselves so well makes you all totally amazing and admirable. Please don't be intimidated for a second. Besides, it's a well known fact that if you speak more than one language your brain functions better, so congratulations! |

Hey - I'm a dual citizen. (Otherwise, yeah, Quebecois get special consideration.) |

Hey Neesie-Pie - you deleted that post! What, you chicken? Afraid I was going to come over there and give you a good Canadian hockey style thrashing? |

Well, I know you Canucks are a sensitive lot, and I didn't want to add to the inferiority complex with my boorish Yankee bravado. (And sometimes I'm just stupid.) |

For those of you who write the fanfiction and the lien by lines, how does it come so easy to you? For weeks now I've been trying to add a line or two to Line by Line #16 and can't come up with anything. I guess I will just stick to readin them instead of trying to wrie. |

Hey Sox - I bet you'll do better than you think. Just write a little something - a tiny little thing if that's all you've got, and then let somebody else take over. We'll support you all the way! I bet you have more to say than you think you do. Try one line to start... I know you probably feel a little insecure, but you just need to make that first step... |

I felt the same way and still do at times. It amazes me how quickly everyone seems to write. However once you add a little you will find it really fun. Just try a sentence or two and see what someone adds to it. |
