For the writers among us, who have you killed in your stories - and who could you never bring yourself to knock off?

For our fanfic readers (and for those who both write and read fanfic) - what is your opinion, in general, of main character deaths?

In my stories, I have killed Steve, Oscar and even Jaime - several times each - but can never bring myself to kill Rudy. (Had a great story planned for that one, too, but the story went another way when I just couldn't do it.) Not sure why.

In regard to reading this type of story, I suppose it depends on how the writer has handled it. I especially remember one of Messyhead's stories where she killed off Steve, and although I am a Steve fan (no - really!), this story was beautifully written and the material handled with great sensitivity.

I'd love to hear others' opinions on this topic!

Well I have killed Oscar once, I have been thinking also in a story where I kill Rudy, but I can bring myself to do it, I donīt know why.

I wonder why Rudy is so hard to kill? Don't think I've ever seen a fanfic where that happens. Not that I am blood-thirsty or a Rudy-hater....just curious.

I'd have a hard time killing Jaime. I did give Oscar terminal cancer (it was going to kill him, but only after the end of the story) and I knocked Steve in the same story. (Thanks for the nice comments, B4E.)

Maybe killing Rudy is difficult because it seems gratuitous. When you kill Steve or Jaime or Oscar they're main characters (or at least Oscar is a main character in my world) and the plots revolve around them and their deaths are intrinsic to the story. Rudy does not usually have a central place in our fan fictions, so killing him seems unnecessary and unkind!

That's true. I also feel that we seem to have stronger feelings about the other characters so killing them allows for all those emotions to be explored.

Hey vscn - it's on fanfiction.net and it's called "Hearing Schubert".

You're right Lola, it does have to do with the strength of feelings you have for the other characters - which seems contradictory, because that should mean you're MORE reluctant to knock them off!

I still don't think I can kill Jaime. It's too much of a bummer.

I really wanted to write about what would happen to Steve and Jaime if something happened to Rudy. Even started the story, intending to do that....and at the end of the story, Rudy was still alive and kicking.

I'd have a hard time killing her because she is just so GOOD. You can't bear to see anything happen to her - AND it would devastate Oscar. I've roughed out one where Rudy dies, but it was because he made a conscious decision to save Jaime - knowing it was him or her, and he chose himself. I haven't decided if I'll go through with it though.
