This new one is tough to title! Don't want to give the chapter 5 twist away in the title, but a hearts-and-flowers title doesn't seem to fit either.

Some suggestions I've gotten so far:
Worst Case Scenario
Love Blossoms
Love Blooms Anywhere
Turn the Page

Opinions? Suggestions?
:)

Got it! While chapter 7 was taking shape, the title presented itself. Yay!

What do you cats think is better - "The Questionable Art of Lying" or "The Dubious Art of Lying"? I'm favoring the latter, but I thought I'd check with you all....

Hmmm...good question. Do you want to imply it's questionable/doubtful whether its a good idea to lie (and presuming it IS an art) - or whether or not there is an art TO lying? (questionable would ponder the question and doubtful has already pondered it and is thinking it isn't a good idea - at least that's how I see it).

Not doubtful - dubious.

Both are suggesting that if lying is an art, it's not a nice art - that should be celebrated or mastered...but does dubious sound better than questionable? Or vice versa? Or am I splitting hairs?

dubious - shady, untrustworthy, suspect
questionable - irregular, odd, strange, murky, unsavory.

You know, I think they're synonyms.

I liked your title when I first read it so I'd say keep 'questionable'. You're right. They do seem to be synonyms. It's very hard to define much difference in meaning at all. I like the British 'dodgy' which seems to work well for most things although not for a title!

Dodgy is a great word, isn't it? Makes me think of some shifty eyed character deking around innocent souls while reaching into their pockets for their wallets. Thanks for the input Lola!

From picking up what I can on this conversation, I would go with dubious. And yeah dodgy is a great word. Sums up things nicely.

Speaking of titles. I HATE coming up with them. It's darn hard to figure out. Except for a few titles that I have in my mind that need a story to go with them.

How do you all decide titles?

Sometimes a great title pops into my head and the story blossoms out of that. Other times, the story may go 5, 6 or more chapters before it lets me know what its title is!

You're very good at titles B4E.

I can't really say what I think the process is. I had a hard time with this one...I knew I wanted it to be something about lying, but I couldn't get to something I liked. At first I thought of calling it "Dissembling" but that seemed completely lame - and too obscure. So I just kept mulling it over (for weeks, actually) until I came up with this. It sure isn't genius, but it's satisfactory. I like it when a title refers to a central theme, but only obliquely. I do so admire a great title. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Long Day's Journey Into Night...there are so many others and I can't think of them!

I don't always think of questionable as being sort of shady - like "it's questionable whether or not it might rain." I knew it was dubious - I just think of that as doubtful - with a "shady" connotation.

Questionable can be shady - "a questionable practice" a "questionable reputation". Perhaps you're right though...maybe dubious has a darker connotation.
