Robert Reed (from the Brady Bunch) was not in their final episode because he felt the premise was too unlikely. He called it the Elephant in the Operating Room - something that simply didn't fit and couldn't be ignored - and he refused to play it. He had to remain on-set due to his contract, and so he spent the filming of the last episode glaring angrily from the sidelines. Was he right to refuse to act the script he'd been given? |

I'm moving this conversation to its proper spot. What do you think, B4E? Do you think he was right? Honestly it doesn't sound that outrageous to me...but as I say, I don't remember the series well enough. It was such a silly show...the hair tonic sounds like it would be right in line with every other ridiculous plot twist. |

I heard Robert Reed was a royal pain throughout the show, thinking himself to dignified and fine an actor to participate in such frivolity. However, he DID sign on to do the show, though he claims the scripts he was shown were less far fetched than what it eventually morphed into. In the first year, I thought the shows were better and less far fetched. That said, I still think he signed on to do it, he should live up to the commitment. If he was worried, he should have written something into his contract about script approval, or just declined entirely if they refused. |

You can't forget though, that making movies or TV is a heavily collaborative process, and he may genuinely have wanted to keep standards up. OR he was being a jerk. I must say, refusing to be in the very last show hardly sounds constructive. It sounds like a hissy fit. As for refusing to do it altogether...not many actors would do that...because opportunities are SO scarce even a stupid opportunity is better than no opportunity at all! He probably thought it would be canceled in one season anyway! |

Actually, it was said that he predicted it wouldn't last even half a season. Here's another question: Did Jaime ever have any Elephant in the Operating Room Moments...? |

Oh, I agree, he DID want to keep standards up. I also heard he was very nice, if somewhat distant to the children. They all seemed to like him quite a lot, but commented on his prima donna behavior. I agree, not many people would turn down a role like that, but then I think he should have towed the line and participated in the last show. I gotta say, that whole last season was pretty bad, and I'm SURE he WAS longing for it to be cancelled. Still - he came back and did all the variety shows and movies didn't he? So where were his standards THEN? |

Lowered 'em, I guess! Just like Leonard Nimoy trying to distance himself from Spock and then coming to terms with it later. He had his hopes pinned on greater things till they didn't happen. TV wasn't quite respectable in those days either - sort of déclassé. I'm sure that bugged a lot of TV actors. |

Yes, I think a lot of movie actors looked down on the Tv actors. I don't think it's quite the same today. |

If I want to be really ungenerous to Mr. Reed and his profession, I would say that actors do tend to be a bit weird. They need a lot of ATTENTION. What better way to get it than to refuse to appear in an episode? |

Which is actually something Lindsay did, in Return of the Bionic Woman - until they agreed to pay her decently, of course! |

To be fair to Lindsay though, I think that's different. She hadn't already signed a contract to do that episode - Robert Reed did. She was just a savvy negotiator - like David Cassidy in the Partridge Family. Do you know those Brady kids got paid almost NOTHING? And NO residuals at all. |

Lindsay didn't really want to play Jaime, in the beginning. When they called her to do Return, she had her agent ask for an outrageous amount of money (thinking they'd turn her down) - and she got it! Great negotiations on her part - and she was worth every penny! |

Yeah, I think Lindsay's case was definitely different. They had to make it worth her while. She was in an excellent position to bargain and she did it. I don't think there was any petulance involved there! |
