I'm sure you've all heard of the Dionne Quintuplets - our Canadian home-grown all-natural Quints!

I HAVE heard of them actually - I saw some old footage of a story about them. They were IDENTICAL too - which is even more fascinating. Seemed like they grew up in a bit of a circus though - being taken from their family and having people look at them all the time. At least they lived though, thanks to government intervention. I think some of them are still alive.

I think there are two left. It's not a very happy story - they were treated a bit like animals in a zoo.

I remember from the documentary I saw, they said they were taken from their parents, declaring them unfit, because they saw the opportunity to exploit them as a human interest story. Granted, the parents probably COULDN'T have cared for them, but they still could have allowed the parents more access. Funny how our societal norms have changed about things like this.

Yeah, I think there was a lot of condescension - they were a poor Francophone family in Ontario, and the Anglophone majority was under the very strong impression that they were lesser people. Ick. Most French Canadians came from HUGE families - I think they would have handled it!

I've seen that documentary too. It did seem like a zoo with them being on display for a time each day and made to perform. How awful!! Yes, it was mentioned too that the family was considered unfit because of their cultural background. What a sad story. Did their parents ever get to know them?

I think the parents got them back later. BTW - I only meant the parents probably couldn't have cared for 5 premature infants in their home - I'm sure they COULD have cared for them once medical issues were out of the way - and they SHOULD have gotten them back once they could leave the hospital.

Right - yeah five fragile newborns in one house would be a challenge to care for!
