It's a good way to express tone or emphasize something though. It's really hard when we only have the written word to make it clear what we want to relate.

Oh, I hate that I repeat letters, use emoticons, exclamation points and capitals, but I can't seem to express my tone without them. HHHEEELLLPPP!!!!!!! :) :)

Oh, I forgot...I use that too!

Or rather - OOOHHHH.....I forgot! I use that too :)

That's what I hate about typing - you can't see the person and hear their voice.

You just reminded me - when you wrote that - of another of my favorites....the dash.

At least I don't write that way when I write business documents or other formal correspondence - so it isn't that I can't avoid it - I just can't seem to when I'm "chatting".

People don't always talk as formally as English can sound when written. (Did that make sense?) That's why we use contractions and (depending on the character) occasionally words like wanna. And people pause a lot when they speak....thus, the dots or dashes. Makes it sound more like real people are talking.

Predictability is not always a good thing in writing. I am apparently guilty of this. Sometimes I like to throw curveballs, though....

It's hard to get around predictability - it's predictable because that's what you want to write. I LIKE reading pieces that aren't predictable though - I find them more interesting and appreciate the care the author took to craft the story - especially if it wasn't easy for them.

I totally agree with you too that we speak differently than we write - we use contractions more in speech than in writing - and I think the dashes and dots do reflect those pauses. Intonation, inflection, cadence - they all make the verbal word so rich. Still, as much as I babble in writing - I am FAR worse in person - so maybe written words do have an edge there :)

He said, she asked, he told her, she suggested.....
In a two-person conversation, how often do you think these are necessary, in order to keep track of who is talking?
