Prologue

(This takes place three months after the birth of Jaime and Steve’s Children.)

Dr. Michael Marchetti watched the island’s beach come into view as the fast boat he rode in cut through the waves. It had been two months since his last trip here to check on the Zanin’s, a group of alien descendants whose parents had been forced to settle here on the island called Ninau or question by the native Hawaiians; due to its sudden appearance last year. Oscar had assigned him this..fate..he thought about it, but Oscar called it a mission of serious national and international security.

“We’ll be there soon Mike.” The statement brought him out of his mental remorse to turn and nod at Chris.

Chris for his part grinned and shook his head a bit as Michael turned back to look ahead of them back out at the water. Chris knew what he was feeling, both of them had loved Jaime and both of them had thought it would end in one of them marring her and making a life with her. Both of them of course failed, thanks to one Colonel Steve Austin. Jaime had never really forgotten him, not deep down in her heart. Now of course Steve and Jaime were married and had two three month old baby daughters named “Rose and Ann” from what he had heard.

“Sir?” the young coast guard ensign, with them on this trip spoke up. “We still have not heard back from the base camp.”

Chris tapped Michael on the back. “Is it normal for the base camp not to communicate back to us Mike?’

Chris looked at Michael with a bit of concern in his eyes and in his voice.

Michael nodded his head. “Yeah, last time I was here, they were having radio issues then. Something about the islands unnatural magnetic field left over from the years of the Zanin shield screen.”

Chris nodded, he had read the report of how an OSI satellite had crashed here last year; on an island that had been shielded from the outside world for over 50 years by an energy barrier that made it appear invisible to visual and electronic detection and of how Steve had encountered a girl named Da-Nay from the Zanin people.

He helped her to get the T-cell serum X-99 for them, due to their immunity issue with Earth germs. Some of the Zanin’s had mutated into feral like humanoids due to the satellite radiation as well. Steve helped save those Zanin and gave them a cure for their immune systems. All in a day’s work for the great American hero, Steve Austin he thought.

Hopping out of the small boat, the young ensign pulled on the line to guide it to the sandy shore as Chris and Michael both stepped out to help him secure it to the beach. All of them saw the large posted signs every thirty yards or so, stating how this was US. Navy private property and used for Navy test bombing no trespassers were allowed.

“How long do they think that will actually keep people off here?” Chris asked.

Michael looked at him. “Hopefully until we are sure the Zanin can live safely among us without dying.”

All three grabbed the bags and backpacks from the boat and headed into the islands enterer

The trek along the well worn path had been a bit long but completely normal. Chris was ahead of Michael and Ensign Wong, when he spotted the Flag pole, marking the base camp.

Chris walked in and saw the mess that was left of the base camp. “Everyone hold up” he whispered back.

Laying the bag down he slowly moved forward, ducking and weaving around the over turned tents and tables. Michael and Ensign Wong watched through the brush, until a shadow fell over them.

“Chris!!!” was all Chris heard as he spun around to see the bodies of Michael and Wong come flying through the air into the camp area. Michael came down hard on an overturned desk..as he felt his left side impact and the feel of his ribs breaking.

Chris started to move forward when he saw the three come into the camp. Zanin’s by their dress but their faces and hair..like…”oh no” he looked at them in fear.

”It’s happened again.” Chris turned to run toward Michael when two men jumped over him from the island jungle behind him. Chris stopped and fell back as he saw their faces changed as well.

“Welcome to our camp” The deep voice from the left Zanin spoke to him. Chris had seen the pictures of some of the Zanin’s and this one looked similar to..”Torg?”

Chris was taken to the center of the camp near Michael and the limp body of Ensign Wong, and tossed to the ground. The six Feral Zaninn’s surround them.

“Bring the female doctor here Riga” Torg stated to the curly haired Feral Zanin next to him. As Dr. Lee was brought into the clearing, Torg looked down on Chris.

“Is this them Doctor? Chris and Michael?” he looked at her and smiled.

“Yes” she whimpered.

“Good.” Torg turned back to Chris and Michael next to him, now looking at him to. “You will get Steve Austin to come here…or the female doctor will die right now.” Torg motioned for the two Zanin’s to begin pulling on her arms.

Her screams echoed out. Both Chris and Michael shouted out. “Stop this..she did nothing..stop it.”

Torg grinned at them..”I will spare her..IF..if you use the communications here to call for Steve Austin to come.”

Michael hung his head, while Chris looked at Torg with anger.

“Ok..just stop hurting her.” Michael yelled out.

Torg waved the two feral Zanin to stop. Michael was taken to the communication trailer and sluped into a chair by the feral Zanin Torg. “Call him now..but do not give anything away…or the female and Chris will die.”

Torg left Michael with two other Zanin and walked back outside to Chris. “What are you going to do if Steve comes here?”

Torg frowned and looked at Chris with pure hatred in his eyes. “When Steve Austin comes here…..I will have my revenge…I will kill Austin and anyone who comes here with him.”

(Ok this is my first try here hope everyone enjoys it as I prepare to take the Austin's, Jaime and Steve out on a mission together. Thanks B4E for your words of encouragement)

Chapter 1

Oscar finished the call he was on and hung up. Turning in his chair he looked out the office window for a moment then swiveled back to look at the family photo he had of Steve, Jaime and their twin baby girls. “I hate to do this pal.”

Inside their home, Steve and Jaime were just finishing tucking the twins in, and on their way tip toeing back to their room.

“Shhhh…sweetheart…walk a bit softer.” Steve whispered.

Jaime frowned at him. “I ‘m the one with the Bionic ear….and I know I am walking softly.” She smiled and poked at him with her elbow.

Both of them made it back into the bed room and slowly closed the door, slipping back into bed.

“Ok now maybe we can get a full nights rest.” Jaime pondered aloud, as Steve slipped in beside her and slid his arms around her.

“well..maybe not a full nights.” He grinned at her.

“Oh really?” Jaime grinned back at him just as the phone rang.

Steve moved at bionic speed to pick it up.”Hello.” he whispered again.

“Steve?” he knew the voice easily. "Oscar?”

Jaime tuned in her bionic ear at Oscar’s name “Hi Oscar” she whispered.

“Steve, listen pal sorry to call this late but..I got a call from Michael out on Ninau island”

Steve glanced at Jaime, who stared back. “The Zanin’s having an issue?”

Jaime frowned at Steve and mouthed the word Zanin to him.

Steve winked at her.

“The same pal, Michael said they found a few pieces of that satellite from last year still on the island.”

Steve stated a bit frustrated. “If Chris is there, let him look into it.”

Oscar countered. “The serum trials are hitting a snag from what Michael said. Listen Steve..I really need you, the Zanin only want a few of us at a time near their main village.”

Steve was about to object.

“It’s a simple locate and find only Steve, you will be in an out and back home in a few days tops.”

Jaime frowned and rolled her eyes a bit. "Since when is any OSI assignment simple Oscar?” she whispered.

‘Look Oscar, what about the Hawaii office aren’t there any agents who can go in my place?” Steve knew there were good agents at OSI Hawaii.

“Michael said Da-Nay asked for you directly.”

Jaime frowned again hearing Oscar and mouthed Da-Nay at Steve.

“Listen Steve, do this for me as a favor Pal, and I will put you on inactive leave for the next six months, how’s that?” Oscar smiled sweetening the deal.

“Six uninterrupted months?” Steve stated flatly.

“Six totally free of assignment months.” Oscar knew that would seal it.

Steve glanced at Jaime who was frowning at him with concern. “Ok Oscar, when do I leave.” Steve hung up after the details and faced his wife.

“Steve Austin, how could you take an assignment now?” Jaime was upset. “And who is Da-Nay anyway?”

Steve dealt with the Zanin and Da-Nay first and relayed the whole story to her. “So that's why she knows me and Oscar is going to put me inactive for six months after..come on sweetheart.”

Jaime rolled over on her side of the bed and faced away from him. Steve moved over and snuggled with her.

“Sweetheart..a few days for six months.” He kissed her neck.

“Oh..ok but you better be safe.” Jaime turned back to face him and his boyish grin. “What is it with you and alien races anyway..?” Jaime asked playfully.

Steve smiled at her.

I will as fast as I can. Takes a bit for me as I tend to be a bit over detailed in my fanfic. Do you think I should maybe tune it down a bit?

Detail is what makes it good. My first few were wa-a-ay too short, until someone (thanks, Neesie-Pie) told me my stories read like Cliffs Notes. I learned from that.

Yeah, detail is important - as long as it doesn't distract too much from the story. If you started describing the color of the walls and disrupting the action, it would be too much. If it feeds the story, tells you something about the character or the situation, then it's good and important!

Yeah, Neesie-pie doesn't stand on ceremony. Sometimes that's a very good thing. Criticism is not bad - unless it's mean.

Nice work, J.

Hey J,

When you're writing dialogue, you should start a new paragraph when a different character speaks. It helps signal to the reader that there is a conversation taking place and that it is not the same person speaking.

For instance, instead of this:

Steve moved at bionic speed to pick it up.”Hello.” he whispered again. “Steve?” he knew the voice easily. “Oscar?” Jaime tuned in her bionic ear at Oscar’s name “Hi Oscar” she whispered.

“Steve, listen pal sorry to call this late but..I got a call from Michael out on Ninau island” Steve glanced at Jaime, who stared back. “The Zanin’s having an issue?” Jaime frowned at Steve and mouthed the word Z.a.n.i.n to him. Steve winked at her. “The same pal, Michael said they found a few pieces of that satellite from last year still on the island.”

it should be more like this:

Steve moved at bionic speed to pick it up. ”Hello.” he whispered again. (Again? Why again?)

“Steve?” (Oscar speaks - new paragraph.)

He knew the voice easily. “Oscar?” (Steve speaks - new paragraph. Since the "He knew the voice easily" belongs to Steve, it becomes part of Steve's paragraph.)

Jaime tuned in her bionic ear at Oscar’s name “Hi Oscar” she whispered. (Jaime speaks - new paragraph. If Jaime were to add another comment, you would not start a new paragraph.)

“Steve, listen pal sorry to call this late but..I got a call from Michael out on Ninau island.”

Steve glanced at Jaime, who stared back. “The Zanins having an issue?”

Jaime frowned at Steve and mouthed the word "Z.a.n.i.n" to him. (Is she spelling it out? That's what it looks like.) Steve winked at her.

“The same pal, Michael said they found a few pieces of that satellite from last year still on the island.”

It takes up a lot more room on the page, but it's easier to read.

Anyway, I hope you find that helpful. And I hope it makes sense!

Chapter 2

Steve dropped the anchor for the medium sized sail boat, and went about dropping the sail and securing the boat. He looked out at the sandy beach just a few short feet beyond. “Sun, sand…sure wish Jaime was here.” As if on cue, the boat radio squawked.

”OSI relay station Hawaii calling Colonel Austin, come in Colonel Austin..over.”

Steve grabbed the mic, and returned their call.

“Sir, we have a priority call for you, from your wife.”

Steve smiled and laughed a bit. “Put her through.”

Jaime's sweet voice came through. “Steve?”

Her voice always made him smile. "Yes sweetheart”

Jaime replied. “Oh good, hoped I‘d catch you before you went ashore…I..I wanted to say…be careful and I love you.”

Steve countered. “I love you to sweetheart…should be talking to you again in about four or five hours tops.”

Saying their goodbyes for now, Steve slipped over the side and swam the short distance to the beach.

Ashore he took in his surrounding, and scanned the beach and jungle around him. Michael had told him to simply come on up to the base, that they were very busy and would greet Steve there. Making sure no one was around with his bionic eye, Steve jogged toward the base camp at a mere 30 mph. At this pace Steve knew he would be there in no time at all. Steve was almost at the base camp, when his bionic eye took in the tents standing but no one was around…anywhere.

“Doctor Marchetti, Michael.” He called out and slowed his pace to move more cautious. Steve’s years as an OSI operative had honed his skills and instincts. Moving with stealth, Steve entered the jungle with the intention of getting to the camp edge. Scanning around him, his bionic eye caught the movement of a person…darting into the jungle ahead of him. Steve knew it was a Zanin by dress. Steve inched his way forward and scanned the camp more when the first attack came at him.

Spring from tree to tree like panthers, the feral Zanin dropped down toward Steve. Steve caught some of the movement and turned just in time to duck a club swung by a…Steve knew it at once by their looks and shoved his right arm palm out into the feral Zanin’s chest, sending him flying backward thirty feet. Four more dropped down and Steve moved backwards toward the camp at a quickening bionic pace. Steve cleared the jungle and saw the camp at once, empty as it seemed save for two men…Michael and Chris Williams. Both tied up, near the large communication tent. Two more Zanin moved out from the tent toward Steve, and the other three from the jungle came up from behind him.

“It’s over Steve Austin..” Torg shouted to him.

Steve could see him now, stepping from the tent…

”You will never leave here.”

Steve frowned at him. “Torg what happened, where’s Da-Nay, where are the others?”

Torg’s fury rose in his voice. “DEAD…because of you…their all DEAD….the radiation was still here in the shape of small strips of the metal from your satellite...it contaminated the water and those of us who were strong it changed…those not…it killed.”

Torg’s fury was burning in him now. “Da-Nay my wife...was first to fall…and your people did not come…we called for help and they did not come.”

Steve watched the movement of the five Feral’s as they circled him, but his compassion for what happened still remained.

“Torg you know my people would have helped you all…the magnetic field here plays havoc sometimes for months with radio’s…you” Steve was cut off by Torg.

“LIES all lies…she died, all of them because I had not ruled here…because you interfered in what should have been…MY rule.” Torg grinned a wickedly hateful grin.

“Take him now!” Steve moved at his full bionic speed and charged the first feral Zanin, hitting him with a massive right armed chop to the shoulder, driving the feral to the ground in pain and agony. Steve would never normally hit someone that hard, but he knew fighting them like this was like fighting slightly lesser versions of himself…their speed, strength and numbers gave them the edge. Steve moved to retreat from their advantage, when two more grappled with him.

Steve flung the one off his right arm, but the female Feral had his left, and she pulled on it till Steve felt his should snap, as he went left side over her to the ground by the force of her strength.

“Jella keep him down, Riga..help her.”

Torg shouted at them, running toward them. Steve acted on pure instinct and pushed out with his feet catching Riga full on in his stomach, and sent him forcefully through the air into Torg, knocking them both down. The female feral Zanin lashed out at Steve’s face, but he caught one of them on his right arm, while the nails of her other hand tore at his face and his bionic eye. Steve rolled away from her, sending pain all through his dislocated shoulder. Steve could see Torg getting up, and the female. Using his legs, Steve leaped up and over Torg, back toward Michael and Chris.

“Let’s go guys now” Steve shouted while reaching down to snap the robes holding their hands.

Chris reached back into the tent for the flare gun he had seen earlier, and grabbed it as the female leapt toward Steve, by the time he set up to fire she was pounding at Steve. Steve was blocking most with his right arm, but not all as two of the others started getting up and Torg was right behind the female. Torg reached out and threw the female Zanin aside…and charged Steve hitting him in his chest. Steve grimaced and fell backward.

“I will Kill you!” Torg shouted and then screamed in agony as a fiery flare struck him in the face.

Steve swung out his good bionic arm and knocked Torg out of the tent. Michael was free now, and got up to help Chris. Chris grabbed one of the pistols left in the security box, OSI standard incase boxes. Chris pulled out the gun, and turned as the Female threw Michael across the tent. Chris fired, striking her in the chest. Steve got to him and Michael as she fell back.

“Let’s go, they recover fast..and that’s only a six shooter Chris, now five.”

Steve lead them out of the back of the tent and toward the jungle. Torg pated out his face, which was burnt and scared, once out he looked over to see Jella on the ground. The other Feral Zanin, that could stand and move helped the other two up.

“We must cut them off…head for his boat and sink it…NOW!” Torg screamed at them.

Steve, Chris and Michael made their way through the jungle following Steve.

“where are we going Steve…” Michael asked.

‘Toward the beach, but avoiding them.” Steve responded while running with them, and looked back once to scan with his eye, when pain shot through his head…almost staggering him. Chris frowned at him.

“Colonel Austin, what’s wrong?” Steve blinked several times.

“It’s my left eye…I” Steve blinked again and his left eye blurred and went dark. “I can’t see out of it.” Steve had to rely more than before on his right eye. All three of them made it to the beach in time to see the Zanin swimming out to the boat and boarding it.

"Well so much for that, what’s plan B?” Chris asked, looking at Steve.

“that was plan B.” Steve stated. Michael stepped up and looked at Steve’s face.

“I think she might have pulled something lose scratching like she did into your eye.”

Steve looked right eyed at him. “Yeah she busted up my left arm to, its dislocated.”
Michael went to touch it. “Not now…right now we need to head away from here…they will be searching for us soon.” Steve ran with them, holding his left arm.

Jaime sat at home, watching Helen hold and play with the twins when she noticed that strange feeling again in her stomach. She looked at her watch, it was only three hours since she talked with Steve last…why was she feeling like something was wrong.

“Jaime, what’s wrong dear?’ Helen asked her.

“I feel like I need to call Steve…like..I don’t know…maybe I am overreacting.” She half smiled at her mother-in-law.

“Well give him a call..I know sometimes I just feel the need to call Jim sometimes.” Helen looked at her with tenderness

Jaime looked at the phone…and picked it up. “Maybe just once to make sure.” Jaime called through to the OSI switch station and waited while they connected and called out to the boat first then the base camp.

“Sorry ma’am..we can’t seem to get anyone.”

Jaime frowned. “Try again ok? “ After five minutes the agent stated the same. “Ok thinks…patch me through to Oscar Goldman...” Jaime gave her clearance and was routed through.

“Jaime?” Oscar’s voice picked up.

“Oscar…listen I tried for a while and no one can get through to Steve or the base camp...” Jaime sound very concerned.

“Listen babe…that can happen out there…that island.” Jaime cut him off.

“I know about the magnetic field thingy…but my gut is telling me something is wrong…Oscar I feel it.” Jaime almost shouted at him.

“Jaime maybe your being a little over protective…Steve is Bionic.”

Jaime was not in the mood. “Oscar…it was just a simple mission that got him shot last time…now please…listen to me. Can we check on him….maybe a satellite or a boat can pass by” Oscar cut her off.

“Babe I cannot redirect a satellite just on the say so of a worried wife…even if she is Jaime Austin.” Oscar stated flatly.

“Oscar..” Oscar stopped her again.

“Jaime give him time to finish and call you back…now listen relax..and enjoy the baby..ok…I have to go..if I hear from him I will make sure he calls you.” Jaime knew it was pointless to continue with Oscar.

“Alright..thanks anyway Oscar..” She hung up with Oscar, and called out to the Air base in Ojai.

“Yes get me Major Dumas office please..tell him its Jaime, Jaime Austin…” In a few moments the line snapped.

“Jaime..how are you and Steve?”

Jaime answered and quickly moved to the purpose of the call. "Major I need a big favor…it would be a favor for me and Steve” Jaime waited.

"Sure what can I do for you guys?”

Jaime breathed deeply then asked. “I need a flight as soon as possible to Hawaii”
