I would say the canon included S & J's marriage in BEA, but that would mean including Michael and Karen Austin - and they belong in NO ONE's canon - LOL!

Yes, their marriage is canon - but not until they are in their 40's - and he has an exwife and she has a stepkid. If I was a Steve fan, I'd still rather throw canon out the window and have them get together when they're young and he hasn't been deceitful to Jaime for a quarter of a century - and an absentee father to boot - I wouldn't want THAT in my canon. That's why I think anything within the realm of believable behavior based on the characters in the 70's series is close enough.

   Yes yes yes.

Like that.

But to me that also means Jaime can date Oscar - not just Steve. It's just as plausible.

Ok I forgot that..your right. So no, no Rudy having it out with Michael..it opens to many non-cannon doors.... @#$ @#$ @#$ @#$

Just joking....to all the J&O fans...just joking... btrw btrw

I never said it wouldn't be fun - it could be if not overdone - I was just musing that it wouldn't be canon. None of mine are - I just try to have their personalities stick to canon even if their actions don't.

I have browsed my story list and only found one that sticks completely to canon. Steve and Jaime kiss a couple of times, but aren't madly in love. But...only one story. *b4e hangs head and walks away muttering*

Was it the same one you mentioned before? I can't remember the name of the one you said. But just because Steve and Jaime aren't a couple doesn't make it canon to me - their behavior , as well as the behavior of the other characters, still has to follow canon. They each have certain attitudes, ways of speaking, that would still have to be the same.

It was called Missing. I think it's in canon...or very, very close.

I have mixed feelings about canon. It seems to be canon that Jaime & Steve were portrayed to be such fine, upstanding heroes. Kids were to look up to these role models.

Let's face it the love lives of these fine, upstanding heroes were less than angelic. Jaime went out with every man that crossed her path while on a mission plus there's Oscar and Chris in the mix. Then there's Steve romancing every woman in every episode.

Chris Williams is canon but I've not read any stories (nor do I want to) with him winning Jaime. It is funny that this is the only area that devoted Steve fans and devoted Oscar fans agree on - no Chris Williams for Jaime.

Then there's the Karen & Michael Austin, Jim Goldman and Jaime's knock on the head stories from the reunion movies. But all this is canon.

The TV writers didn't stick to canon, consistancy or what was right for the characters so why should we?

I think it might be fun to write one that sticks to canon just for the challenge, (I'm doing that right now) but as an Oscar and Jaime fan - well you've got to throw canon out the window right away! Only hidebound sticklers demand adherence to canon, and who listens to them anyway?

I still think it's important to keep the characters behaviour in keeping with their behaviour in the series, (though with Steve and Jaime you almost have to add flaws because they are inhumanly perfect), and to pay attention to their histories, but as far as I'm concerned, everything else is up for grabs.

SW&D - I like you more and more :)

I totally agree!!! Why SHOULD we stick to canon - some of our stuff is no more nonsensical that some of the plot lines they used in the show. Even the Steve fans never really got what they wanted out of the show, so why no rectify it the way you DO want it :)

Good point about their flaws. It's sort of boring being a saint I think, and that's why I like to add flaws, or at least worries, to the characters. Try to see inside them - after all, we only get a glimpse of what they're like. Who doesn't know someone that might seem one way in public, and then another way at home????

I prefer to see them all "in character" as well.

How about a story that starts where canon left off? Maybe Steve and Jaime's marriage doesn't work out because they bought into the fairy tale too and life isn't a fairy tale. They could be freed of the baggage of Steve&Jaime and can finally go for what works best for them now.

I like both characters but I see them as having grown a lot since they were 1st engaged. I don't see them as being right for each other any more which is why I was against their getting married.

I think you should write that story - is that one of the ones you have that you're toying around with? I'm SOOO there with you - that's exactly why I didn't like them together. In the initial episode - on SMDM, they were okay together - even though it seemed like a lot of water had gone under that bridge since they last dated. But still, I could see together a bit.

However, by the time she had her own show, she had changed and matured so much, I just didn't see her with Steve. He seems like a good, old fashioned sort of guy who would want a typical 70's housewife. I think Jaime was more of a feminist that would want to have a say in her life. Oscar seems much more open minded and less interested in other women - he only had eyes for Jaime :)

For all we know - your story COULD be canon if they ever did another movie :)

That's how I like to see it too. Jaime changed so much from the time she was first engaged to Steve that they just didn't seem right together. However they both got caught up in everyone's expectations of the childhood sweethearts getting married that they don't realize it themselves until after the marriage. It's only then they admit to themselves and each other that it's not going to work. They have become different people, want different things and they both go their separate ways to find what will really make them happy.
