It was interesting delving into that - but no positive outcome in sight, and the ending is already a given, if it stuck to canon.

True - Chris is dead, she blames Steve and remembers him at the same time. Full of anger and recrimination - if it sticks to canon :)

Yep - great fun to explore, but there's no positive note to end on.

But of course you don't have to stick to canon...

But I starting this one specifically to DO a canon story! Trouble is, even if I drift out of canon and rush Steve to Jaime's bedside, he refused to go to Budapest...and we know the result of that. There seems no way to redeem that action and no way to end on a positive note.

I'm bummed, because I sort of liked that first chapter...

Yeah, but when he didn't want to go to Budapest, he couldn't possibly know the consequences! It would be unfair to hold him responsible for Chris's death. That's something that Jaime would have to work out, and if she didn't, that would be a failure on her part.

Well, you could always just scrap the whole canon concept and do it the way you like.

Really, I don't think ANY of us want to really stick to canon - Oscar OR Steve fans :)

What if I put the first chapter in The Writers Room and ask you if you (honestly!) think it is salvageable/workable...?

The thing is - Steve and Jaime frequently are grumpy about missions, and very often those missions are incredibly important on some level - national security, safety of innocents - how could they EVER refuse?

They might even look bad for their grumpiness - if they weren't perfect.

That's very true! The writers of the series (and reunion movies) didn't do it perfectly. That's why all of us --Steve and Oscar fans--are not satisfied with some parts of the originals and would like to see it written differently. Why stick to the canon with all its frustrating aspects when you can improve it?

That's the way I see it. Even though I'm an Oscar fan, I CAN SEE the frustration of the Steve fans - wishing that Jaime and Steve had been together all along, that they shared more kisses and intimate moments with each other and not their guest stars - that they didn't have to wait for nearly 20 years to see them together - - with the baggage of Karen and Michael to boot.

Of course this is no worse than what we Oscar fans have to contend with - sizzling chemistry between them, the hint of what could be - or what was after the cameras stopped rolling - the waiting for the two of them to see how perfect they would be together.

So who NEEDS canon? :) I say keep the characters faithful, and make up your own what if. If the characters aren't where you need them to be, let your story be crafted to get them there - that can be half the fun. Acknowledging their shortcomings and then dealing with them could be the first step.

Those are words to march by! I'm all inspired now!

...or maybe I had a little too much wine when I was out lawn bowling...

I decided to start my story based on canon - Chris and Jaime's trip to Budapest - and explore it a little differently. Might be rather dark in places....but the conflict will be a true challenge. (And the resolution another!)

It's kind of funny when I think about all of us normal adults debating about sticking to the canon or "real" lives of a bunch of TV characters of shows that were on 30+ years ago.

I love the characters and sometimes I stop reading a story that goes against what I believe the characters would have or should have done. You have to stick to the basic history and personalities of the characters but we all have opinions as to how they should have lived, if they were real people.
