I think that's a good point. I don't like reading stories that stray too far from what I think they would DO. Granted, I think there is a LOT of leeway to give, as we only see one side of their real personalities. Despite being an Oscar fan, I still enjoy reading a well written Steve and Jaime story. I've seen some pretty good ones too ![]() Jaime COULD have dated Oscar, she COULD have married Steve BEFORE the 20 years that elapsed with the reunion movie. That's why I like exploring the character flaws section - it helps to discuss their shortcomings to help develop their personalities and know where to draw the line between believable and unbelievable behavior. |

I have come to the conclusion that canon storylines are indications of where not to take our own stories. It is ground that's already been tread and the stories would be too predictable. Canon's characterizations are very useful, though. |

I completely agree with that! It's much more fun and interesting to explore new ideas. |

I don't know if I'd say I WOULDN'T follow canon, I just feel like I don't need to follow canon. No one really wants to do that - she isn't with Steve or Oscar in there series, and who wants to wait until she's in her 40's for her to get her man? I just mean that the series does provide a nice framework for their personalities. Otherwise, you'd create a story with a Jaime the reader barely recognizes. What is she is a potty-mouth, drug-addicted, self-centered coward? Yikes! I wouldn't WANT to read a story with Jaime like that. It's one thing to play up flaws we saw hints of in the series, it's another to make her into something she's not. I think I'd have real problems making Steve a coward or a traitor - those were two of the strongest traits I saw evidence of. I can't imagine twisting anything so I could make him one. Same with Oscar - he's simple too devoted. |

YOu're right about characters' personalities and traits. You need to maintain how they basically are in the episodes or you just can't believe it's them. |

Right - I think we can take a little leeway with Russ, Callahan, Michael and of course....Hansen. |

With this Diagnosis story I've stuck as closely to canon as I possibly could...and if I didn't, it was because I forgot some detail of the movie. Of course Louise doesn't exist anywhere, but as we're never explicitly told about Rudy's marital situation, I figured I can get away with it. She was sick the day of Steve and Jaime's wedding. That Parkinson's problem, of course. It was kind of fun trying to pull in all those extra characters one way or another...but I wouldn't want to make a habit of it! |

NO - please don't! It's really gut wrenching reading that story. I can't stop, but it really produces a physical reaction while reading. I think I'll need something a little less emotional - like Casablanca or Dr. Zhivago

Canon is so-o-o difficult to stick to with any faithfulness. I have to commend Messy for doing a great job in her last story. In general, I think canon is something that, as fanfic writers, we deviate from because we have our own personal visions of how it should be. |

Well, thanks. I'm not going to make it a habit....though I do have one going right now that also conforms to canon. I don't know what's come over me. |

So I assume if we want to stick to canon, we can't deviate into the "what happened behind the scenes" sort of thing - true? Or does it just mean that when the story is done we have to be right back where we started from? I mean, if you think about it - NO story can really be canon - only characters behaviors and personalities can be canon can't they? I mean, even sending Jaime out on a mission isn't canon if the series didn't write it - or am I off base? |

No, I think you could certainly send her off on a mission that the writers didn't write. There's always obviously a lot of time between episodes that we don't see on screen, and that's when the stories could take place. You just couldn't have the characters develop in directions they didn't go in the series. While I've been saying this last story of mine was the only canon thing I've ever written, it doesn't qualify in one very obvious way - and that is that the story line and content are nothing that EVER would have hit the screen. Too much about death for one thing, and there's no mission or any kind of adventure in it. So it's really not canon at all. I thought some of your episodes for your season 1 were in a great 'canonic' style, B4E, even if the content wasn't. They seemed about the size of an episode, they had a mission or some kind of adventure on the part of the heroes, and they even had the kinds of cliff hangers you would see just before a commercial break! |

I see your point about what takes place in between episodes. So, what if we show Jaime and Oscar together - but not a couple - maybe just on a date. Couldn't that be canon? Maybe they went out to dinner after the pillow fight in Jailing of Jaime. I think it's possible I agree too that if we REALLY wanted a story to be canon, there would have to be some action and peril in it. |
