At end of "The peeping blonde", Oscar promises to Victoria Webster to find a job for het on a TV channel network in Washington. What do you think it would it be : a national one like CNN (I doesn't know if it was existing yet) or ABC or a more local one ? Bionika |

I need some information about police's ranks. If hostages has been taken, what would be the rank of the officer who would be responsible on the field? Bionika |

As far as the TV news goes, CNN I don't think came into existence until the very early 80's. Also, I would think it would be local, prestigious, but local if it was DC. National is usually chaired, or was at that time I believe, from New York City. And, this just maybe my opinion, but I don't even think the president has the kind of clout to boost her from average shmoe reporter to a national news anchor or even a correspondent. Network producers really do like to believe they're gods when it comes to news teams and such. With the police, it would probably depend on the situation. If it's someone holed up with a family member in a house, it's likely going to be the senior beat officer, perhaps a sergeant. Another factor would be how long the stand off is. If there are several hostages, like a bank hold up that's been on going for more than an hour or so, I would think a captain (from SWAT probably) would be on scene coordinating everything. Then there is the hostage negotiator, which would more likely not be a police officer in the 1970's, but a psychologist retained by the department or even possibly an FBI agent. Only OSI agent that I could plausibly see as a negotiator is the guy that was in the backdoor pilot on SMDM that had the super memory, but I would say someone from outside the police department and the OSI would be the most believable. |

Thank you very much Inanna. The local CD channel will be perfect for my story because the action takes place in DC surburbs. I think that the captain from SWAT will be the best choice for my story. Thank to have remind me about the psycologist, I had forgotten him. Bionika Edited by Bionika, May 10 2015, 10:33 PM.

I've got (perhaps) a difficult question about politics. As with my fourth season, I'm at end of 1980, I would like to know if after presidential election at beginning of November , the new team could already take decisions or should they wait till the official nomination of the President at mid of January? I believe the President Elect and his staff and cabinet cannot issue executive orders or anything like that until after (or at least the day of) the inauguration in January. Until then that point in time, the current President is in power. He's usually referred to as a "lame duck" because any big agenda issues like a health care initiative or something major like that would pretty much go nowhere if the residing President introduced it after the election and he lost (or it was the end of his second term) because basically the legislative branch would simply wait until he was out of office and deal with the new President after he was sworn in for any major (and more than a few minor) political issues. If it was something else, something where an immediate response would be needed -- sort of going off your last question -- suppose there was a terrorist act that evolved into a hostage situation or required an immediate response to in some form, the residing President and his administration would be the ones issuing the orders. The President elect and his administration would not be able to respond to it, other that making statements to the public and press, until that President's swearing in or somewhere around that time. I think it maybe a few days to a couple of weeks sooner than the inauguration, will have to double check and get back to you on that, but definitely January and not November is when the President Elect would be able to issue orders. Just can't quite remember if it must be the day of the inauguration or if it can be slightly sooner than that. |

Okay, hopefully the copy and paste is working on my tablet here. Outgoing Presidents have cooperated with the President-elect on important policy matters during the last two months of the President's term to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of operations that have significant national interests. The Presidential Transition Act of 1963[1] authorizes the Administrator of the General Services Administration to certify, even before the December vote of the Electoral College, the apparent winner of the November general election as the President-elect for the purposes of receiving federal transition funding, office space and communications services prior to the beginning of the new administration on January 20.[7] The President-elect assumes office as the next President of the United States of America upon the expiration of the term of the previous office-holder at noon on January 20. This procedure has been the subject of many misinterpretations and urban legends, such as the myth of David Rice Atchison's one-day-long presidency, which is predicated upon false assumptions and a logical flaw. Taking the formal oath of office does not affect the automatic accession to and occupation of the office of the presidency, which, in the case of the U.S. President, proceeds, ipso facto, from the expiration of the predecessor's term and the immediate start of the new four-year term. The oath of office is necessary so that the President can "enter upon the execution" of his office, but he is already President from the start of his term. This is what I gleaned from Wikipedia in regards to your question under President-elect of the United States. You might want to give Wikipedia a shot for the same search, but in French, the article might have a French translation to it, but I don't know for sure. |

Thank you very much Inanna for your researches. I posted the question here because I tried Wikipedia and wasn't able to find the correct answer (I probably didn't enter the "good" terms for the researches. I'll try now with "Presidential transition act" and I hope to find the article. Bionika |

This is one think that I like a lot while searching informations for stories: learning a lot about very various subjects. Again, thank for your help Inanna. Bionika |

Okay, so I have a question. I want to end a section of my story with the saying 'Apres nous, le deluge...' (Sorry for the spelling errors, not familiar with the keyboard shortcuts to bring up the accents for the vowels :/) I've always thought about the quote from an observer's point of view, which was along the lines of 'After we're gone, all h e l l is going to break loose' though others have interpreted the idiom as 'Once I'm dead, it won't matter'. Now, I know that it is purported that Madame de Pompadour said this to Louis at some time during or at the end of the Seven Years' War, which had drained France financially and put a pretty good dent in the king's popularity from what I understand, but that's about the extent of my knowledge on how the saying might be viewed in France. The saying is overheard by one of the main character's and I'm using it as a hint that the story is going to get darker after that point. I'm pretty comfortable with staying with the idiom at the end of the section, but I think I would still like to get people's views and try to understand the saying better. |

That's a good question, because I really have no idea. Other tv shows that I've watched like ER never specify a room and one almost gets the impression that the ER residents merely find an unoccupied room to get some shut eye in. Though there were a couple of episodes where it looked like one of the residents was asleep in some sort of really small lounge (it didn't look like it was much bigger than a supply closet). I think you could call it the 'Staffroom', though it might also be referred to as the 'Staff Lounge'. Or there may even just be a sleeping alcove in the break room and the room may just be referred to as 'the break room'. |

Hello Inanna Thank for your answer. You are describing in this sentence exactly what I was searching for : in my story, I want to have Dr Wells (of course) take some rest as I remember Dr Greene or Carter did sometimes in ER (and then a nurse came in telling them that plenty of wounded people are arriving at hospital!).
