For the new story I'm translating now, I will need your help again for fixing some details. First, could you tell me when is the first school break and have it got a special name : autumn vacations, halloween vacations, Thanksgiving vacations, All Saint's day vacations...? Second, when a woman will be married soon , how do you tell her : "You are about to become Miss is/Mrs/Madam Y"? (I let you imagine who is the woman and which name will be Y.... Thank in advance Bionika |

Hello, I thought I'd give this a shot... Here in the Northeast, Columbus Day is the first federal Holiday. It occurs during the fall, the first small break from school, a long weekend. It is to commemorate when Christopher Columbus "discovered" America. This Holiday is celebrated the second weekend in October and the Monday following is a Federal Holiday (banks and PO's are closed). Usually it is around the 15th of October, though the actual date he landed was October 12, 1492. It is a big celebration in Italian-American communities like in The North End of Boston, as Christopher Columbus was an Italian. The Next federal Holiday is November 11, Veteran's Day, which is to celebrate the men and women who have served the served the country through military service and to honor those who were injured or who have died as a result. There are parades and memorials during that Holiday Weekend. As with Columbus day, the weekend is said to be long, as Monday is a day off. Next is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. Oftentimes, here in New England, primary grades have a half-day of classes and Thursday and Friday school is not in session. Thursday is the official Federal Holiday. Many working adults don't have the Friday off after Thanksgiving and must go back to work (at least here), but schoolchildren and College age kids have a full 4 days off. That's usually it until December. Here, children may have off from Christmas eve, (or if Christmas eve or Christmas are attached to a weekend, then the weekend), through 'till January 2. That is usually the significant "winter break" that kids most often look forward to. Adults usually try to take time off around the holidays as well, but most businesses are closed on Christmas Day and New Years day, as those are National Holidays. People are lucky if they can bargain for to get time off other than those 2 days. Most colleges have a winter break that divides semesters. Many College students have off from mid-late December after Final Exams until Mid-Late January when a new semester starts. As for your second question about marriage, I am not sure if I understand your question. Are you asking about how a man (usually) proposes??? Maybe you are wondering when or whether a woman decides and chooses to be called Mrs. So-and-So (Takes her Husband's name), or Ms. Such-and-Such, and uses her Maiden name (her own surname)... If that's the case, perhaps someone who has been married could answer that better than I, however, I know with friends, it was discussed before the marriage, written into the marriage license for the wedding, and later the papers were all taken to the Social Security Office later and then to the Department of Motor Vehicles to be changed (if using husband's surname), for all the records. I hope that helps, maybe others can discuss, too--- LNNs |

Thank you LNNs (Do you mind if I call you like that? ) It's very interesting and complete. (I've learnt that we have some same holyday's day even if the reason is different ; for instance 11th of November is in France end of World War I). It will help me to choose during which holiday time I'll the story wilo take place. Bionika |

I don't currently have a dog, but you could pretty much make up any sound that seems to fit. Your "wiiif" works...or possibly "woof. You could also say something like "The dog gave out a soft 'woof'." |

Er I'm sorry Poski but you'll have to wait a little : till now I've got only 2 pages out of 9 translated. And as the draft isn't very achieved I'm still inventing and making changes for having the story believable. Bionika |

Do you know how is called the "lighted board" on which doctors put X-rays in order to interpret them? I don't even know how it is called in French so I've got difficulties for translating it. TIA. Bionika Edited by Bionika, Jun 23 2013, 10:47 PM.
