One thing have hit my minds. I've just post "For Peace-13" and i saw that a guest is wiewing "Fan fiction" .
I've never tried to post a comment when I was a guest on the site. Can the guest post a comment?
A lot may read the stories but can't express their feelings about them?

If nobody comments you feel like you have an audience of two people, and after awhile you wonder why you bother. That's where I'm at right now.

I wonder why Messyhead because Your last story "FAMILY" was very good and each chapter has been seen by about 100 persons and has 3 or 4 comments. ?><

Well there you go, Bionika - I had no idea you had read the story! It's nice for me to know you read it.

I don't take 'hits' very seriously because they don't indicate whether the person has actually read anything. They may take a peek and look away again. Only by comments do you know the person has read the thing.

You're right - criticism is extremely hard to do - for one thing, we don't all tolerate criticism well, and some of us don't want criticism anyway - this isn't a creative writing class, after all! And then it is difficult to criticize elegantly - to make your point without hurting the author.

I like your line about not living in a teddy bear world! SO true!

Guests cannot post comments. I agree with this, actually, because anonymity can make people nasty, and there are people out there who are only looking to stir up trouble.

Well, I know I am guilty of not posting comments on fanfiction. I keep meaning to, but just never seem to get the time. The reason I want to is to encourage writers to keep writing. I agree with messyhead - you can get discouraged if you feel no one is reading or enjoying your story.

I also agree about comments like "you stink" not being helpful. I've never seen any like that, but what would be the point? I too like constructive criticism. Especially here because I know it's well intentioned. The feedback I've gotten in the past has helped me (I hope) become a better writer.

I like to think there are still guests out there who read the stories and like them even if they don't join. After all - I was one of those guests for awhile, but then joined so I could comment on some of the stories here :)

Guests used to be able to post comments here, until we had the problem with someone posting porn. (I'm very grateful to RW1274 for cleaning up the mess and keeping such a careful watch while I was unable to be here!)

I agree that "hits" alone can't indicate if lot's of people are really reading your story.
I think that to have an idea if you have many real readers, the best indicator(gauge) is the numbers of hits from one chapter to another. I had a quick look on 2 or 3 stories and I noticed that after 5 or 6 chapters the number of hits by chapter is decreasing...the number of hits remaining is for me roughly the numbers or real readers really hooked (and usually it's about 40 to 50!!). So with about 80 to 100 views per chapter, I think that you hooked a large number of people with the story "FAMILY".

Of course, if people leave the story without posting, we don't know why...and can't hook them in next story. As you said, some had just a glance at the first chapters of the story and then leave ; may be other have began to read and then leave because the srory doesn't match with their expectations (story Jaime/Steve for a Jaime/Oscar fan, ...)

I just wonder why most of leavings occurs roughly after 5 or 6 chapters . Does it mean that we need "little "stories with long chapters?

Posting my stories here first has definitely lowered my hit count and number of reviews over on fanfiction. For me, it's worth it, though, because the feedback we get here is invaluable in terms of helping to shape a story.

And Bionika, people tend to drop off after 5 or 6 chapters on fanfic, too. It seems that may be the point where they decide if the story has captured them or not. Don't worry about number of hits, though. If you write to please yourself, the readers will follow - I promise. (You certainly have the talent.)

The fanfiction site's stats for "The Family" says that the story has received 153 hits since the beginning of June. That looks great until you break it down and find that the first chapter has 53 hits, which drops to 15 by chapter 2. In the middle of the story, each chapter receives 11 hits. That means that 11 people have read the story from beginning to end. That's fine, because I don't expect the entire world to take an interest in Oscar and Jaime stories, and I'm happy people bothered to read it.

Nonetheless, I figure SOME of those 11 must have enjoyed the story, and if they did, they should leave feedback! (Or even if there was something that really bothered them - I'd like to hear that too.) When you spend a long time figuring a story out and refiguring it and writing and rewriting it doesn't seem too much to ask a reader to respond in some way.

I don't expect that from people who have already commented here - it's those other mystery readers I'm talking about.

What really thrills me is that those mystery readers are an international bunch - Brazil, Japan, Australia, Germany, Italy, Britain...wow.

I've learned that the first chapter on fanfic always gets dramatically higher hit numbers because when people click on your story, that's where they land. They may only be reading a chapter a night, and after clicking on the story (which counts as a hit to chapter one), they use the drop-down chapter list to pick up where they left off.

Thanks Beth

I can assure you that I'm not obsessed with number of hits :) and writing my first story has been a pleasure. (An I know that I've at least three readers!!) :) .

When I go to fanfiction, I use the drop down as well to scroll through chapters - so maybe that's why you ARE getting such a drop off. I keep meaning to go to fanfiction and comment on the stories there just to give my opinion, but I never seem to have time.

I've been guilty of not even posting my stories there - I should. At least it would give those anonymous fans more stories to read and maybe they'll even join us here. Too bad there isn't a way to alert them to our presence.

Hello Messyhead

Where did you find the stats? I know only the numbers of views in Fanfiction board and the results are quite different. (No, no Beth, it's not an obsession about hits witch is appearing :D , just curiosity!).

I think that sometime people prefer to let comments only at the end of the story...even if it's difficult for the writer to write and post without any feedback. (But I think that only writers can understand that)

And your not mystery readers are also in a international bunch. Wow, wow!!

I alert them to our presence in every one of my story descriptions. :)
(And if someone comments in the bionic forum there, I send them a personal note.)
