I'm so impressed with how many of you read stories, participate in conversations here - and even write stories! - in a language that is foreign to you! I would love to hear about how and when you became bilingual (or more)! How many languages do you speak and when did you learn them? As a small child in a bilingual household? Perhaps in school?I really have to compliment you because it's something I was never able to do. Had several years of Spanish in high school and a semester in college, but never enough to be able to fully communicate - and most of it has left me entirely these days. To those of you who participate here in a language that is not your own - well done! |

Hello Beth, I learnt English and Spanish in school but I improved them in going several times in England, USA and Argentina, and when I was friend with Guy Williams (Zorro) who lived in Argentina, we wrote often to each other in English. When I got internet, I belonged to several groups, wrote and read many fanfictions to improve my english and with FB, I practice more my english and spanish. The internet was a leap to improve languages. Elise

Elise, that's fascinating! Thank you. The actor you got to know in Argentina...was he American or was English a second language for him too? I'd imagine it's a very useful language to know when you're traveling. |

Hello Beth I learnt English 7 years in school plus one year of English applied to biology and chemistry and had twice half a year of English lessons at work mixing grammar and vocabulary applied to my previous job (food-processing industry, dealing especially with potatoes). In my actual job I use English with colleagues from other countries: mainly Germans, Slovakians, and I had some contacts with Indians and Belgians (even if this one we could speack French, we used English for reports because it's the company's group language). But I don't improve a lot because we are all non native English speakers. I think that I have improved a lot by reading fanfiction and participate to threads on English sites (mainly this one) but my dictionnary is still my best friend sometimes for understand some words in fan fictions and for writing mines. I prefer writing because I can check myself with dictionnary I'm still very shy for speaking even if as said my boss when I asked for more lessons : "No because you manage to be understandable!". If I phone a colleague, you could say that it's an important matter!! I learnt Spanish 5 years in school but I've never praticed after so I've lost a lot. I think that I can read, perhaps understand a little but not speak. May be It will come again if my children learn Spanish at school. I learnt Russian 3 years in school. I choosed it because I wanted to do science but I wasn't very good at (I repeated a grade) and if the second time my results in science were the same as the first time, I should do something else in which languages may be useful. In my school, a teacher was opening a Russian lesson and I had already learnt cyrillic and basic russians words because I went for a trip in what was U.S.S.R at this time. I wrote to our tour guide and when I went for the second time in Leningrad I was able to do basic things like take the bus...but fortunately I didn't know enough for understand if people shout after me if I have taken a wrong queue in a shop! I've lost contact with our tour guide and as I haven't praticed yet, like for Spanish, I have lost nearly everything. However don't think that I'm very fluent in English because writing this answer has taken me circa 45mn and it should have many mistakes in! Bionika Edited by Bionika, Oct 27 2013, 04:40 PM.

Bionika, thank you so much for taking the time to answer! Did you take a year of Biology and Chemistry in English? Wow! And two other languages, it sounds like very close together in terms of when you learned them all. How did you keep them all straight? And your English is excellent - very fluent! I'm so glad that we can help serve as practice for you! |

No, I after scoool, I studied biology and chemistry at university and I had only a English lesson of one hour during the week. I remember it more precisely now : it wasn't during one year but three. The first two years one week we studied a text, the next week we listened to texts and the last year it was only listening. The subject of the texts were about biology and chemistry and industry using them. Bionika |

Yes, during three years I had the three languages at the same time (from the 10th grade to the 12th grade). Bionika |

Guy Williams lived in Argentina but was American, he was born in NY and later lived with his wife and kids in LA and he was invited by Argentina President's wife to go in Buenos Aires, Life there was so pleasant, he decided to stay, leaving his wife and kids in LA. I think English was a second language for him, as at home when he was a kid, he spoke Italian, but he spoke english currently. Bionika, I am impressed by the number of languages you learnt at school, Russian must be pretty difficult. You know 4 languages with French. Elise

Yes but it's different when you learn the language just for learning it because it's in classroom program and when you have an aim. You are most motivated in the second case. I learnt cyrillic alphabet during summer holidays and at the same time I was revising English through a correspondance course because I needed to improve my English level before going in a new school in September. I could say that I was doing my English homework with no enthusiam and instead I was eager to learn Russians letters and basic Russian words (hello, goodby, thank, sorry, yes, no...). The teacher was also very enthusiastic and motivated. Moreover, we were only five pupils so we needed to do our exercises and lern our lessons because with so few pupils each of us would be interrogated. During the last year, we had a teacher coming from Russia but it was less interesting because it was the exam's year and we were studing classic texts insted of texts dealing with dayly life. I also exchanged some letters with our tour guide and it was a real challenge first to decipher hand-written cyrillic words and understand the meaning. WOW!! You guys really inspire me! I'm really excited about studying various languages in school, and even more so, after hearing the stories of my trilingual+ friends! I'm quite excited! I myself, as previously stated, am taking French in school now, and hope to also take German, and as I'm possibly going in to vocal performance, I will also probably study Italian in College! Maybe soon I'll be able to converse with some of you guys in these other languages! But honestly, you guys who are non-native English speakers/writers speak in less "broken English" than people I know who are native English speakers!! Maybe they should write/speak with a dictionary too!!

Sitting in front of the TV, watching an old rerun of The Big Valley, eating a Heath bar, while wearing a pair of sturdy Lee Jeans, a NASA baseball cap, and a "Colt's" hoodie; all while a paperback copy of "Cyborg" lays nearby...ah...the perfect image of a true fangirl of the great Lee Majors.... | |
