Warning : This little story doesn't belongs to "my" Bionic woman's 4th season. I've just made a break in it, the time to fill in some blanks... As I'm sometime very busy reading and commenting the NaNoWriMo stories, I don't promise you to post a chapter per day as usual. But let's begin by the prologue : ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like usual, Oscar has fallen asleep circa 1 a.m. Like usual, during this particular evening, instead of reading files he had looked at old photo albums. Like usual during the night of 7th December he was dreaming about his brother Sam. Before, Oscar’s dreams were sad and full of anger but since a little more than thirteen years; since he could have mourning him thank to Jaime’s help, they were peaceful. Like before, he was “seeing” Pearl Harbor events but now he could add country’s gratitude: Sam’s (their) name cleared, the military honors, the flag on the casket, the state funerals on sea… Suddenly Oscar was roused of his dreams by little quick repeated knocks at his door and a frightened and panic-stricken women voice saying “Help me!” Edited by Bionika, Nov 21 2013, 04:34 PM.

Very touching to have this look at Oscar's emotions. I'm glad that Rudy is there for Kate...but what will happen if something goes wrong with her bionics...? Scary! |

I am glad Jaime is there since Kate wanted a female with her and her doctor can't be there. Can't wait for the baby to arrive! |

As a matter of fact, I have written the story mainly on Oscar's point of wiew...and emotions; trying to break his "shell", going through him, "inside" him. Bionika |

In the armchair Oscar was struggling for staying awake. He was concerned by his niece health. There were no background in this field; she would fill a blank page in bionic history. Moreover he wanted to be awake when Jim will arrive. But tiredness overcame him and he couldn’t prevent his eyes from closing. Now it was memories from thirty years which were besetting him. He had moved into Washington at end of 1960 for working with Admiral Richter. He was already working a lot: coming back home late or even working all the night long, working during week-ends… He had barely noticed his neighbors. This year, like each night of 7th December, his dreams were about his brother Sam and he had a restless sleep. He was dreaming about Sam, wounded, dying on the ship deck, stretching his hand toward him and calling for help. He could hear his shouts: “help me! Help me!” He was hearing again the officer knocking at their house’s door, his mother’s shriek and her tears. He was a little boy and first, he hadn’t understood what had really happen to Sam… Suddenly he realized that all the noises he was hearing weren’t in his dream but were real. Somebody was knocking at his door. It seems that it was a woman. She was at the same time crying and shouting “help me!” She was screaming with pain. He opened his door and recognized his neighbor across landing, her face contorted with pain. “Mr. Goldman, help me. The baby is coming; I need to go to hospital”. “You’re going to have a baby?” stammered Oscar with disbelief. He had never noticed that she was pregnant and was discovering it with astonishment now. “Where is your husband?” he asked. “He is working on night shift in a factory in next town. I’ve phoned him but he can’t go back now. We haven’t a car. He should wait for end of shift. Then a colleague will drive him back. Please help me!” She stopped, being breathless due to the pain of a new contraction. Oscar felt helpless. He didn’t even think to have her sit down inside his warm flat. She leant on the door’s frame. “Mr. Goldman, help me!” “You haven’t thought that you could give birth in the night?” asked Oscar. “Yes” answered the women.” A friend of mine should come with me but she had a small car crash last evening due to icy patches. Nothing serious for her, it’s only crumpled metal but her car is at the garage, she can’t come….Ahh. ” A contraction was coming again. She ended in a blow before wincing and crying in pain again: “and my husband and I haven’t any relatives in Washington.” The intense pain had her first kneeling and then lying down on the doormat. She stretched her hand toward Oscar. “Help me!” |

Italic characters means that we are in Oscar's minds, dreaming with him about what happened during the night of 7th december 1960. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, he was completely awake and became to be efficient again: “we’re going to hospital. Could you go at your home and take your suitcase?” “Er..; nothing is ready” said the woman, "the baby is expected only for mid January” “Don’t you know what you need? ” snapped Oscar, used to military efficiency. The woman seemed surprised by his tone but it helped to her gather her minds. “Ahh, …I remember, I’ve got a list. It’s in my bedroom” she answered while uttering a groan. Oscar let the pain decrease and then helped her to her feet. “Come with me” he said, giving his arm on support. They cross again the landing. The woman sat on her bed, rummaged about in the bedside table and then gave triumphantly a sheet of paper to Oscar. Oscar had a look in the bedroom and saw a suitcase on the top of a closet. He climbed on a chair and took it. Then he has a look on the list. “Where can I find the baby’s vests?” asked Oscar “In the closet” she answered. “The woolen hats and socks?” “They are in the closet’s drawer”. Quickly and methodically, Oscar gathered all the things necessary for the baby and her mother. “We’re done” he said to the woman while closing her suitcase. She didn’t answer. Oscar turned back toward her. She was now lying on the bed and was looking at him with panic-stricken eyes. “What is happening now?’ He asked. ‘”Waters have broken” she replied. “And not only waters” he muttered, looking at the yellow bed-spread. “What?” she said, having hearing him saying something and watching his concerned face. “There’s blood too” answered Oscar. Again a chapter in italics, meaning that we are still in Oscar's dream in 1960. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oscar has already taken a decision. He told her: “Now it’s too late, it’s too risky to go to hospital in private car: it may be too long, without any life supporting devices for you or the baby and I haven’t any medical knowledge (“especially in giving birth” he thought). I’ll call the paramedics Less than tem minutes after Oscar’s call, an ambulance screeched at Oscar’s building foot. “Come on, Miss, we’re going” said the ambulance man while putting her on the stretcher with the doctor’s assistance. “Your suitcase is ready, that’s great” he added. Oscar went with them on the landing and then began to heading to his flat, yawning. “You don’t come with us?” said with astonishment the doctor. “I’m not her husband, I’m only her neighbor” replied Oscar, yawning again and thinking to his tomorrow’s (no today’s, it was already 2am) work. He added: “his husband has been informed; he will join her directly at hospital”. “Please, come with me” pleaded the woman. Oscar watched her. She seemed completely scared. “Help me! “ she said again. Again Oscar had the feeling that it was Sam who was telling him to help the woman. “OK, I come” he replied. “Oh thank you very very much” said the woman, taking Oscar’s hand and tightening it strongly. “That’s good” said the ambulance man. “Don’t let her hand. Help her: remain her to breathe when she has contractions. And between two contractions, speak to her, tell her stories or have her telling stories so time for going to hospital will seem shorter and, maybe she will forget a little pain.” So Oscar, who had never really paid attention to his neighbor, began to chat with her. First he asked her about her and his husband wishes for the baby’s sex. Of course, they didn’t know yet but they were thinking that boy or girl, it would just be a God’s present and a way to happiness. Then his neighbor began to tell him her life, how she had met Tom, her husband. Both had lost their father, during World War II. As war widows, their mothers has met in an association. And while the women were chatting or doing arts and crafts, children were playing together. Tom was his best childhood friend and it had seemed natural to them, when they were growing up to be in love, to get married and start a family. Oscar listened a lot and remained silent. He had few to say: the biggest part of his life was job and as it was dealing with secrets, he couldn’t speak about it. Nevertheless, her chat about her life has made lots of good to Oscar. It has made him going out of the world of military secrets which was his ordinary life. Somehow, he was being reconnected to real life. When they arrived at hospital, the bleeding had stopped but was reactivated by the necessary tests done at emergency ward. Oscar was ready to left while she was ready to be wheeled to delivery room or operating room depending of the next events. Again the woman called him: “Please, stay. Tom is going to come but, please stay too”. Oscar hesitated. “If I know that you are here, I‘ll feel reassured. You are like a lucky charm for me”. Oscar was surprised. It was really the first time that somebody had called him “lucky charm”. “It will help me during delivery”, she added “Again these words” thought Oscar. Again he could nearly “feel” Sam saying them. He decided to stay and came back to the waiting room. Edited by Bionika, Nov 30 2013, 05:14 PM.

Circa half an hour after Carla’s has been taken by medical staff, a nurse came to see him in the waiting room. She told him: “everything will go well. You have taken the right decision by calling paramedics. She had placenta praevia and needed a cesarean urgently. You saved her and the baby.” Oscar smiled. Tom arrived afterwards. Oscar was about to left but Tom pleaded: “Could you stay, please? I’m so scared. I fear Carla and or the baby will die. Don’t leave me, please, help me. ” This time, he didn’t hesitate and accepted immediately to stay. Tom was very nervous and was smoking cigarette upon cigarette. Oscar tried to reassure him as far as he could but it wasn’t an easy task. So he tried to have him thinking to other things than his wife and child present situation. “Have you thought to names” asked Oscar? “Yes”, if it was a girl, we had chosen Mary and for a boy, Jim.” “But why is it so long?” was repeating at least for the twentieth time Tom while Nurse Sabrina came toward us. “Congratulation, Mister. You are the father of a healthy boy despite his unexpected arrival into the world nearly one month before the scheduled date. Your wife is in resuscitation room and will be awake in circa two hours”. “Can I see the baby? “asked Tom “I’m sorry” replied, “not already. We are taking care of him and have still some tests to run”. You could see them both in a few hours when your wife will be awake”. “Great” said Oscar. “All's well that ends well for everybody. I’m leaving now”. “I think that Carla would like to see you” said hurriedly Tom. “And you don’t want to see the little one? “ He added. Oscar nodded his approval: “you’re right”. The two men stayed talking till they are authorized to see the child and his mother. Again Oscar remained nearly silent and listened a lot. Tom was now imagining and describing their new life with the baby. Eventually, the nurse came back again and said to them: “it’s OK now; you can see the mother and her son. They are on third floor, room 303”. Tom knocked at the door and came in with Oscar. Carla was seated in her bed. The baby, sound asleep, was in an incubator on the left side of her bed. She greeted the two men with a large smile. “Hello, may I introduce you to baby Jim? “ As a reply Tom kissed her. Oscar stayed at bedside while Tom went near the incubator for looking at his son. “He is marvelous” he said to his wife. Carla took Oscar’s hand. “I don’t know I can thank you for everything you have done to our family” she said. “You’re welcome” replied Oscar. “Anybody would have done this”. “I’m not sure” replied Tom. “Sometime people are so selfish.” Oscar yawned discreetly. “You’re tired. We are sorry to have spoilt your night” said Carla. “It doesn’t matter, I’m used with my work to have few sleep and sometimes not at all” said Oscar. Tom leaned toward Carla and he whispered something in her ear. She nodded and smiled then said: “Mr Goldman, we have something to ask you” Edited by Bionika, Nov 28 2013, 04:42 PM.
