Dr. Wells is Missing…Again (Part 3) A Six Million Dollar Man-Bionic Woman crossover By: PineappleAngel Chapter 1: Flatline Jaime Sommers could not believe her ears when she picked up on the noise inside the doors of the ER…. “We’re losing him!” “Rudy! Pulse falling off!” “Come on Steve!! Hang on!” Jaime heard Rudy shouting at Steve. All she could think was He loves me!? She continued reasoning… maybe that’s why it’s always been awkward between us! That’s why he was so hurt when I didn’t know him! And although she couldn’t sort it out, Jaime knew that somewhere she loved him too. That was why she was so terrified by the sound to come… BEEP…..BEEEEEEP………….. FLATLINE!? “NO!” Jaime screamed at the horror-filled sound of her former love’s heart stopping. “NO! Steve!?” She screamed and cried upon hearing the sound, and lashed out with a mighty punch to a nearby wall. “Jaime!?” …………………………………………………………………………………….. Jaime had wandered off, while Oscar was filling out various security forms, and he was growing worried. He hurried through many hallways, until he heard a scream from the operating area of the ER. He ran until he was her, screaming, clutching her head in her arms, now kneeling against the wall. “Jaime!?” Oscar ran to her, and kneeling beside her, he pulled her into a comforting hug. “Babe? What’s the matter? Are you alright? What happened?” “S-steve…” Jaime whimpered, burying her face in Oscar’s suit coat. “What about Steve, honey?” “I…. I heard…” She sobbed. Oscar forced her to focus and turned her face to look him in the eyes. “What, Jaime? What did you hear?” “One doctor shouted, “we’re losing him!” and then Rudy was pleading with Steve, and then someone yelled that his pulse was falling off, and then after a few more shouts…all I could hear was that one awful sound…” “What!? What sound, Jaime!?” Oscar pleaded, tears shining in his own eyes. “Flatline.” <END OF CHAPTER 1> Edited by PineappleAngel, Nov 13 2013, 06:36 PM.

Chapter 5: Finding The Key It had been nearly an hour since Jaime had collapsed and Rudy had carried her off, and Oscar was still anxiously pacing outside of Steve’s room. He stopped and looked intently into the small window of the door leading into the bionic man’s room. Suddenly, Rudy came quickly up behind Oscar and placed a hand on his shoulder. The OSI director jumped, startled. “How is she?” Goldman asked. “She’s fine, for the moment. It’s the same toxin that leaked in Steve. She’s only in Phase 1, though, and the operations necessary should be relatively few. We’ll do what we were planning for Steve and go in and remove the leaking, corrupted parts and replace them with new, improved ones. The procedures lined up will require a few weeks recovery, but I don’t think either of you were planning to leave away time soon.” Rudy stopped with a thoughtful chuckle. Oscar shot him a hard look. “What? Now what are you smiling about?” Rudy turned and started back down the hall with a cheery twinkle in his eye. “Oh nothing…well…if what I’m thinking of works, you’ll know soon enough.” “Rudy! That’s no answer!” Oscar shouted, irritated after him. “I wouldn’t want to get your hopes up! We’ll be finished in a few hours! Oh, and you can sit with Steve, if you’d like.” Rudy turned and began leaving the hallway, through a far door. “Rudy!?” Oscar shouted angrily. “Duty calls, MISTER Goldman!” Oscar shook his head as he heard Rudy laughing down the next corridor. Following Rudy’s permission, he reopened Steve’s door. He sat down again, and remained there, keeping a silent vigil, until Rudy’s return. LATER… Abundantly joyous, Rudy quickly made his way down the hall, suddenly stopping in front of Steve’s door. He peeked in the window and saw a very distraught and anxious Oscar Goldman. Stifling a loud laugh, Rudy turned his countenance serious and briskly stepped in. “Rudy? How is she!?” Oscar leaped to his feet. “The operation was a complete success…but…” “Rudy? What is it? What’s the matter?” “Well…I don’t know how to tell you this…” “Tell me WHAT, Rudy?!” “Well…I guess you’d just better see for yourself...” Rudy led Oscar down the wide hall to a nearby room and quietly opened the door. He waved Oscar inside. As Oscar passed, they shared a brief moment of serious eye contact. Oscar stepped in and immediately rushed to Jaime’s side. She was sitting up, awake in a bed, sobbing. Her face was covered with the handkerchief she held in her hands. Oscar pulled her close. “Babe? What is it? What’s the matter?” She pulled away and looked up at him, her eyes shining. “What’s the matter? Why nothing’s the matter! Exactly the opposite!” She smiled. Oscar looked at Rudy, puzzled, who was now also widely grinning. “What?” “Oscar, I remember! Everything! I remember it all!” Flabbergasted and shocked, Oscar glanced to the doctor. “It’s true Oscar! While I was working on her ear, I was also able to correct the damage done when she almost died! Everything is back now! For the first time, Oscar, we are seeing and speaking to the full, complete, and physically well Jaime Sommers; the Jaime that Steve knew and fell in love with. Oh and speaking of Steve, you may notice that there is a large empty room right next door, and I have full confidence that soon, we can bring Steve off the machines and into that room. And that sometime after that, it may be a while, but the two of you are going to walk hand in and out of this hospital and back to the life you had before any of this happened!” END OF CHAPTER 5 |

AN: HELLO AGAIN!! Well...after all my empty promises of completing the story, I've come up with one nice long chapter!! I've got the rest planned out... I promise: IT WILL BE DONE BY CHRISTMAS! Now, back to school in the morning with little time of my own, but here you go! Chapter 6... Chapter 6: Off the Machines Nearly a month after Jaime had carried Steve into the hospital, he was still in a coma. One morning, both Jaime and Oscar were visiting Steve in that same, small room when Rudy entered. Oscar rose from his seat, next to Jaime, buy Steve’s side, to greet Dr. Wells. Jaime was almost unaware that Rudy had entered. She was tightly holding Steve’s left hand and marveling over the slight improvements in his appearance. His face was not quite as pale as it had been before, and many of the bruises and minor cuts were faded. Despite these signs of healing, since Steve’s teary smile 3 weeks prior, he had not made one single motion or utterance. Suddenly, Jaime became award of the men calling her. “Jaime!?” Rudy nearly shouted. “Huh?” She looked up, startled. “I said, “Good morning”, but I see you’re not interested in my update...so you can go back to…whatever you were doing…” Rudy chuckled. “Oh no, Rudy! I’m sorry, go ahead.” Jaime blushed. “Today is going to be a long, hard day.” Rudy deeply sighed. “Today, we’re taking Steve off of the machines.” Jaime interrupted, terrified. “Rudy! NO! You’re not seriously considering doing that to him! It hasn’t even been a month! You can’t give up on him!” She jumped up and stood over Steve’s still form, protectively. “No! No, Jaime! That’s not what I meant! We’re not pulling the plug on his life support, for him to die! We’ll be running tests on each of his vital organs: heart, lungs, etcetera, and checking which ones are strong enough now, and which ones are in need of treatment or replacement.” Rudy paused with a smile. “And the ones that are strong and healthy will be free of the machines. So by today’s end, we should be able to have him off of many of these things. And we also believe that the more alive we bring him, like this, the closer we’ll be to bringing him back to consciousness. We’ll probably be able to get him in that big room too, just as I promised you when we brought him in.” “That’s wonderful news, Rudy. Wonderful news.” Oscar nodded, proudly. After a month of crying tears of sorrow and fear, Jaime released a joyous sob and hugged Rudy. “He’s going to be alright, now, Rudy? Really alright?” “You bet Jaime. Alright now you two go find someplace to wait. It will be several hours before we’re complete; and better make it far away. We don’t want you to hear anything scary again, now do we?” Rudy gestured knowingly to Jaime, recalling when she had heard Steve flat line, upon arrival. Jaime nodded and after placing a soft kiss on Steve’s check, left with Oscar. 7 hours after being sent away by Rudy, Oscar and Jaime were anxiously pacing in another area of the bionic ward; close enough to be summoned, but far enough away so Jaime would be protected. After nearly the whole day going y without any news at all, Oscar finally snapped. Frustrated, he suddenly turned at a wall and leaned heavily against it, smacking his hand down upon it’s surface. “Where ARE THEY!? It’s been over 7 hours!! And they can’t tell us ANYTHING!? We have a right to know what’s going on!! For both of your bionic surgeries, and all operations after, I was in the viewing room, watching! I even watched you die!!” Jaime placed a comforting hand on his back. “But that was when you hardly know me! I don’t know what Steve went through when I died…but from what I’d seen before and what I’ve seen after, losing me tore him apart…And it would be the same for you, if something went wrong and Steve died. You two may not realize it, but you are very, very close, and if you watched him die? Rudy’s only trying to protect you!” “Yeah…like when we tried to protect Steve from losing you again…” “What?” Jaime was puzzled unknowing of what he meant. “That first while, after you woke up, we weren’t sure what was going on, so we collectively decided not to tell Steve that you were alive again. We hid you from him to spare him the possibility of losing you twice.” “And how did he react to you protecting him?” Jaime prompted. Oscar chuckled, “oh, about the same as I am now. You know, he nearly threw me through a wall when he found out. He could’ve done it too…” Their off-topic musings were interrupted by a loud page over the loud speaker. “Oscar Goldman and Jaime Sommers wanted in Room B204. Oscar Goldman and Jaime Sommers to room B204 please.” Overjoyed, the pair scurried down the corridors, until they at last neared Steve’s previous room. Rudy greeted them outside of the now empty room. “He’s not in there, Rudy…” Jaime observed. “No, Jaime, he’s not!” Rudy beamed. “He’s being situated in that room, right down there, next to yours.” Although it had been longer than Jaime needed to stay in her room, for recovery, she had stayed there, to be near Steve. “Is he alright, Rudy?” Oscar nervously pleaded. “He’s a remarkable man, you know? Although weakened for now, almost all of his organs and normal internal functions are working perfectly!” Rudy nodded proudly. “Almost all?” Jaime prompted. “Yes…well…his heart is not functioning properly, and we don’t see much chance for improvement. We tested it under various levels of exertion and barely any actions above breathing could be tolerated! So, we’re going to try something that I’ve been wanting to experiment with…we’re going to give Steve a bionic heart.” “What!? Steve would never go for that and you know it, Rudy! We hold our sanity knowing that we are only half, or less than that machine, and if you take away his heart….there’s no telling what he’ll do! That would mean that his body is only functioning because another machine allows it to! And Rudy, what if it shorted out? What if it failed!? He would die instantly!” “Well we’ve successfully carried this out with Madame Pal-Mir, you’ll remember…” Rudy began. Oscar interrupted, siding with Jaime. “Yes, but she was an old woman who did not have much physical strenuous activity! Also, for her, it was crucial and the last choice; She would die, because there was no match for a human transplant! Steve is different! He’s young, has his whole life ahead of him and he does more strenuous physical things everyday than you or I will ever do, in our lifetimes!” “Yes, he does, BUT, he only needs the power and energy behind him, to power one limb! And despite the risks, it could dramatically increase his bionic capabilities!!” Rudy argued. “Bionic capabilities!? Rudy, I’m sorry to bring this up, but isn’t there a definite chance that Steve may be crippled after this battle!? And if that is so, wouldn’t a normal one do just fine? I’m sorry, but I side with Jaime: Steve would not be in favor of not having a human heart…” Oscar angrily fumed. “Well, we can discuss this more later, then…I’m sorry you feel this way…Technically, a human heart would be a bit more normal and typically ideal when one’s heart would fail, but there just are certain circumstances that can not be ignored...perhaps we can just add in bionic repairs...replace a few valves and such, but keep his own heart basically intact…” Dr. Wells tapped at his moustache thoughtfully. “Can we see him?” Jaime brought their discussion back to the current important topic. “Oh yes! You’ll want to be in there! We think he’ll be regaining consciousness, shortly. This way…” Rudy led them down to the large, spacious room. Inside, Steve lay on a large pristine bed with only a few machines monitoring and running his hear, around him. A few chairs were set randomly throughout the room, but one, bigger, comfortable chair was deliberately placed at Steve’s left side. Smiling to Rudy, Jaime quickly took back her special place, holding Steve’s hand an softly talking to him. While Jaime intently watched her lost love, Oscar and Rudy continued to argue about Steve’s proposed bionic heart. Suddenly, Jaime called out to them. “Oscar! Rudy> I think he’s coming to!!” Sure enough, Steve was beginning to move a bit and his eye fluttered open. After searching around for a few seconds, it found Jaime’s face floating above it. “Jaime…” he smiled slightly as he whispered her name. “Hey Steve…How you doing?” Jaime smiled in response. His countenance changed. “Hurts…Everywhere….but I guess I feel like I hit my head, got knifed, kidnapped, worked over as a punching bag for a few huge muscle men, caught in a fire, crushed by a rafter, paralyzed, and then shot!!” Steve’s failed attempt at sarcasm was constantly interrupted by heaving breaths and dry swallows. “Oh Steve…” Jaime began in anguish. “But hey…I’m alive!” Steve gave a tiny wink. “Hey Pal. Good to see you back with us!” Oscar stepped more in to Steve’s limited view. “Oscar.” The bionic man acknowledged Goldman’s presence. “How long have I been out?” “3 weeks, Steve, 3 long weeks.” Rudy answered. “3 weeks!? I’ve taken long naps before…but this is ridiculous!” Steve led them in a chuckle. “Rudy? They’re back! I can feel them again!” “Your bionics? Good, good. And that’s not the only thing that’s back...” He smiled and nodded mischievously towards Jaime. “Rudy!” She responded in a laughing shock. She then answered Steve’s puzzled expression. “After we brought you in, I got a little bit of your toxin leaking in me too…Relax! I’m fine! But uh…when Rudy extracted the faulty parts…my memory came back! Steve, I remember everything! I remembered you, being a kid, the high school football games, my tennis career…us…Oh Steve, I can’t believe I forgot how to love you!” Steve smiled with tears streaming down his face. “That’s wonderful! You’ll n-never kn..know how h-hard it was fo-for m-me n…not to s-say I….l-love y…ou…” Suddenly, he stopped and squirmed in pain, his body tense. He breathed in shallow gasps, unable to concentrate. “Hey R-rudy…I d-don’t like g…etting loopy…b-but I uh….really….need….s-something…” “Can’t you give him anything for the pain, Rudy? He’s not looking too good…” Jaime quickly found the words for him. “Yes, I’m sorry Steve. We couldn’t give you anything before because of your head injury, but now we’ll get you on some painkillers alright? Hey, uh, Oscar? Why don’t we let our bionic lovebirds here have some privacy? I’m sure they have a lot to talk about...” Rudy smiled again and started towards the door. “Right. You two behave alright?” Oscar chuckled. “I’ll check in on you later, Pal.” Once alone, Jaime and Steve turned back to each other, finally with love in their eyes again. END OF CHAPTER 6 |

AN: Hello guys! SO SORRY that this one took so long! I've had a hard and busy week as you may already know, and this chapter may be the longest I've written...and the most mentally and physically hard to write. It's a bit darker in tone and it took several sittings to get it down on paper. But, I finally got it done! 3 more chapters to come!! I WILL be done by Christmas, and then on to more and better (?) things!! So, I'll warn you, this is a bit more dark, as the title implies...but I hope you enjoy it just the same!! Note: I did not do much proofreading or re-reading my work, since it was so long..so if you see something weird, let me know!! ENJOY! Chapter 7: Deep Depression It had been many months since Steve had first woken up, and after a long struggle of recovery and physical therapy, Steve was ready to be transported back to Washington. The year had passed by, long and hard with many ups and downs for the bionic team. Steve had undergone a massive multi valve replacement surgery in which his weakened heart was reinforced with bionic parts. After most of his human wounds bad healed, Steve was finally ready to try and start working his bionics again. The first thing to return to him was the sight and movement in his left eye. Even after the long months of working and healing, his bionic arm was unstable and uncooperative. He was lucky if he could lift a glass take a drink and set it back down without shaking it, rattling it, spilling it, or crushing the cup with his unsteady grasp. His legs were far worse. He could barely move them, let alone stand or walk on his own. However, through it all, Jaime remained by his side, fighting with him and helping him through dark days. She helped him work through his therapy, changed the bandages on his wounds, and held his hand when he was in pain. Though their love was stronger than ever, Steve was isolating himself and becoming more secluded and reclusive. He shut himself off from the outside and rarely showed his true anguish and feelings to his friends. After the first month, Oscar had to go back to Washington, but called at least once every day to check up on Steve’s condition. On a few occasions he was able to make it up to the facility to visit, but his visits were few and far between. Finally, now, in the middle of November, Steve was stable enough to be moved aback to Washington. Oscar flew down in his private jet, on that day, to escort his agents, home. He came to the hospital to personally take Steve to the airport… That morning, he walked quickly into the bionics wing of the center and up to Steve’s room. Glancing in the windows, he was a bit startled to see Steve lying atop the bed in a favorite pair of bell-bottomed blue jeans, a light blue shirt and a matching jean jacked, ready to leave. He lay staring blankly at the ceiling, alone. Oscar proceeded, with a put-on cheery air. “Good morning, Steve!” He opened the curtains on the wide windows by Steve’s bed, letting in a bright wave of light. “Ah, it’s a lovely day today, don’t you think so? Well, come on, it’s time to go home…well come on, Pal, you gonna sit up for me?” Ignoring Oscar’s comment, Steve angrily kept glaring upwards, raising his left arm up above his body. He held a shiny object tightly in his hand. “Luck? HA! THIS was supposed to bring me luck! Some luck I’ve had! I got kidnapped, I almost died, my hearts quit on me, and now I can’t even stand on my own!” Oscar opened his mouth to counter, but Steve continued. “No! Don’t even say it! Don’t say you understand or that it’s alright or anything like that! How could you understand!? How could ANYONE understand!? You take on active man; an astronaut; a pilot’ A MAN WHO HAS WALKED ON THE MOON!! A man who lives life to the absolute fullest…And Old Uncle Same tells him to go up in a plane, and he comes right back down with it. You take that man’s legs, arm, and eye. Now he wishes he was dead! He’d be better off, dead…but NO! You give him a second chance! Give him new legs, a new arm, a new eye…You not only make him whole again, but you make him better and stronger than he was before; able to live life even more full! You give him a couple of years to get used to it, enjoy it even…And then? You snatch it away! You take the life out of his new legs! You cripple him again! And where is he now, Oscar? You tell me! A helpless invalid who has to be waited on and treated like a baby! “Do you know what it’s like to look to your friends for support, and all you get is pity!? To look on the face of the woman you love, and know you’ll never be able to provide for her? You’ll never be able to provide for her? You’ll never be able to dance with her? To hold her in your arms? Jaime’s expecting the bionic Steve; the man who goes for 60 miles an hour jogs and leaps over fences with her! So tell me Oscar! What kind of LUCK is it that left me this way!? You’ve all got your jobs and your lives to come back to…Where does it leave ME!?” By now, Steve was screaming in tears and he hurled the shiny trinket across the room. After this outburst, Oscar was speechless, he could find no words to console his friend, nor advice to offer. Instead, of talking more, he slowly walked to the other side of the room to retrieve Steve’s wheel chair. Glumly, he steered it up to the bed and leaned over Steve. “Alright, Pal. Let’s go home…” Linking his arms under Steve’s he half carried, half dragged him to the edge of the bed and into the chair. Oscar took Steve’s coat, which had been resting on the bed, and draped it over its owner’s shoulders. With a sigh, he wheeled his friend out to the hall, before realizing he had forgotten to check if anything had been left behind. “Wait just a minute…” Oscar told him before turning and stepping away. He hurried back into the room and tripped on something on the floor. As he lifted his foot, Oscar saw that it was what Steve had thrown before…The pen! He bent to pick it up: Steve’s lucky pen! He thought to himself. FLASHBACK… After a few seconds of silent pondering, Oscar became suddenly aware of the shiny blue pen that read “NASA”, in his hand. Steve’s lucky pen!! Oscar had borrowed the pen, when he misplaced his own, and he’d forgotten to give it back to Steve! Oscar felt suddenly guilty. Ever since Steve had gone back to doing regular assignments for NASA he carried the pen with him, for luck, at all times, on or off the planet. Oscar and Steve had deemed it lucky as once they had been stranded on an island with many wild beasts, and they’d been cornered by some of them. Well as the beasts neared, Steve did everything he could to distract them, but the only thing that caught their attention was the shiny, blue and silver pen. He’d tossed it to them, and while they were fighting over it, the OSI agents made their escape. Later, Steve had wandered back to the site, and found the pen, undamaged in the sand. And ever since, he’d carried it with him. I can’t let him go to surgery without this!! Oscar thought… “Hey Steve!” Oscar’s quick phrase forced Steve to turn. “You forgot your lucky pen.” He tossed it gingerly, to Steve, who caught it with ease. “Have a nice time, pal.” Steve smiled and turned to go, but looked back. “I’ll see you next week….’pal’!” Steve joked, using Oscar’s nickname for himself. Steve’s charisma and charm in delivering the last line broke down all barriers, and all three men joined in a hearty laugh. Steve smiled, gave a small wink, with the ever-so-slight raise of his left eyebrow, and left, letting the glass door slowly thump to a close, behind him. (close flashback) That had been the last time Oscar had seen Steve happy. Running his fingers carefully over the smooth surface of the pen, he clicked it thoughtfully and slipped it into his pocket… Later… “Well, here we are!” Oscar wheeled Steve up to the door of the 1st floor apartment. “Home sweet home!” Steve rolled his eyes at Oscar remarks. He was angry at their new living arrangement, because Oscar had decided that together, they would move in here so that he could keep an eye on him. Again feeling like an invalid, he angrily refused Jaime’s offer to push the wheelchair. A bit upset, she stood back awkwardly. The trio entered the spacious living quarters and gathered in the living area to discus. After talking for a while, Steve decided that a cup of coffee for all of them would be nice and he demanded on getting it himself. Slowly, using mostly his left arm, he worked with the wheels, rolling himself out into the next room. He came right up to the cabinet and opening it, he saw that the cups were on the highest shelf., just out of reach. Stubbornly wanting to prove himself, Steve shifted his weight forward, placing his feet n the ground. Locking his legs stiff with his hand, Steve rose unsteadily. He reached up and grabbed onto the ceramic mugs, but his legs began to wobble. As his footing was lost, he flailed out to steady himself, grabbing on to the cabinet. However, his weight was too much and the shelves full of ceramic and glass spilled their contents. He fell in a mighty crash. “STEVE!?” Jaime screamed as she ran back to the kitchen with Oscar at her heels. “Steve!? What happened!?” She began to swipe away the broken pieces and tend to him. Upon seeing Steve’s position, partially slumped against his chair, Oscar instantly knew what had happened and he fumed. “Jaime, why don’t you go ahead…I need to talk with Steve for a while…” He motioned for her to leave and after she did, he hoisted Steve into his chair and knelt at eye level. “Ok Steve, now you listen to me, and you listen good. Earlier, I didn’t know what to say, but I do now.” He took the pen from his pocket and held it in Steve’s face. “You said that you hadn’t had any luck? Well you are mistaken! Do you know what this has brought to you? Jaime! Jaime has her memory back! She remembers you! She loves you! She doesn’t care HOW you are! She LOVES you! You were so happy that day in the hospital when we told you and you knew she was yours again! And pity? You think we pity you? I’ll tell you who pities you: YOU DO! “I have never seen someone with SO much self-pity and mule-like stubbornness, NOT to get well! You need to move on and accept what’s happened to you! You need to stop blaming it on everyone and everything! It just happened! It was no one’s fault! And you need to stop pulling stunts like this! Accept it, Steve! You are not where you used to be. You need help and you’ve got to accept that! But Steve, you also can’t give up. You’ve got to fight it! Fight it for the people you love, Steve, and the people who love you. Fight it for Jaime.” END OF CHAPTER 7 |

Sitting in front of the TV, watching an old rerun of The Big Valley, eating a Heath bar, while wearing a pair of sturdy Lee Jeans, a NASA baseball cap, and a "Colt's" hoodie; all while a paperback copy of "Cyborg" lays nearby...ah...the perfect image of a true fangirl of the great Lee Majors.... | |
