Chapter 1: Flatline

Jaime Sommers could not believe her ears when she picked up on the noise inside the doors of the ER….

“We’re losing him!”

“Rudy! Pulse falling off!”

“Come on Steve!! Hang on!” Jaime heard Rudy shouting at Steve.

All she could think was He loves me!? She continued reasoning… maybe that’s why it’s always been awkward between us! That’s why he was so hurt when I didn’t know him! And although she couldn’t sort it out, Jaime knew that somewhere she loved him too. That was why she was so terrified by the sound to come…

BEEP…..BEEEEEEP…………..

FLATLINE!? “NO!” Jaime screamed at the horror-filled sound of her former love’s heart stopping. “NO! Steve!?” She screamed and cried upon hearing the sound, and lashed out with a mighty punch to a nearby wall.

“Jaime!?”

……………………………………………………………………………………..

Jaime had wandered off, while Oscar was filling out various security forms, and he was growing worried.

He hurried through many hallways, until he heard a scream from the operating area of the ER. He ran until he was her, screaming, clutching her head in her arms, now kneeling against the wall.

“Jaime!?” Oscar ran to her, and kneeling beside her, he pulled her into a comforting hug. “Babe? What’s the matter? Are you alright? What happened?”

“S-steve…” Jaime whimpered, burying her face in Oscar’s suit coat.

“What about Steve, honey?”

“I…. I heard…” She sobbed.

Oscar forced her to focus and turned her face to look him in the eyes. “What, Jaime? What did you hear?”

“One doctor shouted, “we’re losing him!” and then Rudy was pleading with Steve, and then someone yelled that his pulse was falling off, and then after a few more shouts…all I could hear was that one awful sound…”

“What!? What sound, Jaime!?” Oscar pleaded, tears shining in his own eyes.

“Flatline.”

An: Quick note, sorry guys for not being around for the last week or so!! I've had several personal issues, and a MINOR finger, type-inhibiting injury that have delayed me from getting on the computer and typing my story!! So, here's a VERY SHORT chapter 8, and Chapter 9, which will have a Christmas theme, is coming very soon..possibly on or maybe before Christmas day!! :) On this note, this chapter is very late, I tried to get it out on Thanksgiving, but obviously, that didn't happen, so *late* Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and in general, Happy Holidays to all of you, my new friends!!! :)
Oh, and for my fellow LEE FANS.... do you like my new profile pic?

Chapter 8: Giving Thanks

A week later, it was Thanksgiving. Oscar awoke earlier that morning, and hurried to wake up Steve. Entering the room, he was a bit surprised to see him already sitting up, awake, staring thoughtfully at the ceiling with a small smile on his face.

“Well, you’re up early, Steve. Good Morning!” Oscar approached.

“Sit down, Oscar. I need to talk to you…” Steve’s countenance turned serious, and he looked directly into Oscar’s eyes.

“Sure pal…What is this all about?” Oscar questioned while sitting next to Steve, on the edge of the bed.

“Oscar, you know that I’ve loved Jaime, much longer than I’ve even known you. And, we’ve been through more than any couple should ever have to go through. We’ve both been severely injured to the point of being the only man and woman relying on bionics for all of our lives. She died, came back, but when she came back, I lost her again! But now, she’s come back, but tragedy struck again! That disease got me, and it got me good…just like Jaime, I died because of my bionics…but Rudy and his bionic gadgets saved me again.” He paused, thoughtfully gesturing to his heart. “This old ticker may not be mine, but I owe it my life…Jaime and I…we’ve been through a lot, but we’ve come through. We’ve lived…and for a reason too! Oscar, I think we were meant to be together, to share our lives, our unique experiences, our love…I want to ask her to marry me.”

Goldman widely beamed. “Finally!! That’s great! I always felt like you would, you should! But after last week, I just didn’t know.”

“Yes!” Steve interrupted. “Last week. THIS is what I need to discuss with you! Oscar, last week I was the lowest I’d ever been in my life, even lower than after the crash when I tried suicide…I thought about trying it again….and it terrified me! After we spoke, I though for a long time. My legs are severely damaged. I may never be able to make them work and walk again. So, am I just going to lay here for the rest of my life, having you and Jaime do everything for me? No…I’m too independent of a person to be stuck in that chair forever…But, in order to remove myself from all of the help, I’ll need a lot of extra help from you…”

“Anything, pal!” Oscar eagerly offered.

“Well, when I ask her, I want to be able to do as a man should. I want to kneel in front of her, open that little box and put the ring on her finger. I may not be able to carry her over our threshold, or dance and the wedding, but I at least want to do that right. What I need from you? I need you to work with me; help excersize my legs and arm. And we’ve got to work fast! I’ve already got the date picked out for when I want to ask her.”

“When?”

“Christmas. That’s all I want for Christmas. Pretty good present for her too, huh?” Steve chuckled. “Yep… “She” is what I want for Christmas. My Christmas Wish…”

“Alright Steve, I’ll get you ready. Now, let’s enjoy Thanksgiving!” Oscar nodded with a smile, and helped Steve up.

Oscar and Steve enjoyed Thanksgiving with Rudy, Callahan, and Jaime in the gentlemen’s apartment, all the while thinking of Steve’s “Christmas Wish”.

Thanks b4e!! :) yeah, it's ok!! I tend to let my nails grow wild, and a nail on my writing hand got caught in a drawer (?how?) and it ripped a lot, so I couldn't really use one finger for a few days, writing, and also typing, but it's fine now!! heehee! It happens to all ladies, I'm sure, every now and then!! ;) But anyway, thanks! if you liked this one, then I'm sure you'll love the next one, and the last one, after that!! :) yes, there are only 2 chapters left!!

Here is my Christmas chapter at last!! Merry *late* Christmas to you all!! :)

Chapter 9: Christmas Wish

In the month following, Steve worked very hard with Oscar to make progress with his legs. On Christmas morning, on the way to a party at Jaime’s rented apartment, they stopped at eh OSI building for Oscar to sign a few papers and to pick up Callahan. When they arrived, they began the repetitive annoying process that had to be repeated every time they went anywhere.

Oscar stepped out of the driver’s side and went to the trunk. He removed and unfolded the leather wheelchair and wheeled it to the passenger side. Steve opened his door and after several minutes of struggling, he finally sank into the chair.

A little while later, Steve was waiting in Oscar’s office, while he had stepped out, and was fingering the shiny object in the tiny blue case, again. He was startled from his thoughts by Peggy.

“My, it certainly is beautiful.”

Steve jumped. “Callahan? I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you come in. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. Yes, it’s real pretty, isn’t it? Oh! Merry Christmas!” He smiled up at her.

“It sure is a lovely ring, Colonel Austin, and Jaime is lucky to have it, and you, for her Christmas present.”

Steve gave her a hard look with a hint of a smile. “Callahan, after all of these yars and all that we’ve been through, it’s still “Colonel”? Even on Christmas?” He chuckled.

“Alright Colo-Steve…”

Steve laughed. “Say, I need one more run through. Do you mind posing as Jaime for me? I think proposing to Oscar would be a bit odd…” He winked. She agreed and he positioned her a few feet in front of him.

After slipping the box in the pocket of his jacket, he adjusted a few things on his wheel chair and slid forward. Using his hands to place his legs out in front of himself, he pulled away from the chair and dropped to a kneel. He then took the ring box out of his pocket. He stopped as he heard some rustling outside the door. “Hey! It’s Oscar! Say Callahan, let’s play a little trick on Ole Oscar…” He briefly explained, and she nodded, laughing.

When Oscar entered the room, he was startled to see Steve kneeling before Callahan, with the ring in his hand.

“Oh Callahan, I’ve admired you from afar for so long…won’t you take this ring and be my wife?” Steve pleaded with a hidden smirk.

Before she could respond, Oscar rushed up between them shouting. “Hey! Hold on, Pal! Aren’t you asking the wrong lady?”

Ignoring Oscar’s interruption, Callahan smiled to Steve. “I’d love to Colonel, but don’t you think it would be a little hard? Being married to your boss’s secretary?”

Steve shrugged and pulled himself back into his chair. “Well then…I guess I’ll just have to ask Jaime…” Both Callahan and Steve burst into laughter, seeing Oscar had fallen for their joke.

“Very funny…very funny...” Oscar commented sarcastically. “Now let’s get moving, alright!”

Later at Jaime’s…

After the group had enjoyed Christmas dinner and spent a few hours socializing, Steve knew that it was time. Glancing out at the small terrace on Jaime’s back porch, he asked her to join him.

Smiling, she wheeled him outside in the crisp December air. “Jaime? Would you do me a favor? Could you stand over there for me for a minute…” He directed her across from him.

“Sure Steve…”

He smiled and pushed himself out of the wheelchair, and into a kneeling position. He looked up at her, took a breath, and began. “Jaime, I’ve known you for nearly as long as I can remember…And I’ve loved you every minute of that time. No matter what happened to me, or to you. I’ve always kept that love burning for you. We’ve been through more than anyone would even believe…and somehow, still, here we are! It’s like we’re destined to be together, to survive, to show that world that we can live. And Jaime, this Christmas, I only want one thing…and it’s a wish to last me a lifetime. Jaime, this year, my Christmas wish is this: Sweetheart, will you please marry me?” He carefully removed the little box from his pocket and opened it. He held it high offering it to her.

Tears streamed down Jaime’s face. “Of course Steve. I would love to marry yoou! What took you so long!!”

She allowed him to slip the ring on her finger and then dropped down to his level. Both beaming and weeping, they kissed and held each other tight, never wanting to let go.

Inside, Oscar watched from a window. He smiled and raising a glass in toast, he whispered, “He got his wish. Merry Christmas, Pal.”

Chapter 10: I Now Pronounce Thee….

After several months of preparation and work, the special day finally arrived. It was at last the day when Steve and Jaime would finally become man and wife. The wedding was set in late March. It was still cool outside, but there were flowers beginning to bloom and birds singing in the air. The ceremony was scheduled at a beautiful small chapel, only a few blocks away from the OSI building. Despite their public stardom and numerous celebrity friends, Steve and Jaime decided to only have a small gathering with only close family and friends present. In one room at one side of the church, Jaime prepared with Peggy and Helen, Steve’s mother.

“Oh, My. You look just beautiful, Jaime! The dress is lovely!” Callahan beamed at the gorgeous flowing white dress.

“Oh I’m so terrified!” Jaime worried. “I’m so sure I’ll mess something up! And I want everything to be perfect, for Steve!”

“Jaime, I’m sure Steve will love you just as much after the ceremony as he does now, no matter what either of you say or do!” Helen comforted her. “And If I know Steve, and I do, he’s probably thinking the same thing too!”

And Helen was right...for across the hall…

The gentlemen all dressed in fine black tuxedos prepared for their respective parts in the proceedings. Both Oscar and Rudy were honored ad thrilled to be Steve best men. Unable to decide, and cherishing friendship with both of them, Steve had finally decided to have 2. Steve, of course, was the groom, and as his mother knew, he was anxiously worrying about his part. Steve’s stepfather, Jim, who had been delighted with the task of giving Jaime away, comforted his stepson with words similar to those given by Helen to Jaime.

Steve wheeled his chair in front of the full length mirror and examined his clothing. He had considered wearing his Air Force dress uniform, but with Jaime’s input, he had sided with the typical wedding attire. He stared with loathing at the chair to which he was confined. It had been a year since the incident with the Tucellis and Steve still had to pay for their actions. Their attack and the disease had taken a lot of life out of him, but on this, his wedding day, Steve was ready to get it back.

Finally, it was time. Jim left first, to take his position. He knelt by his step son and smiled. “You’ve worked for this day a long time, son, and I am so proud of all of the things you’ve done! Today, this is when the reward comes, after all of these years, she’s finally yours Steve! I’m so happy for you and Jaime. Congratulations and good luck!” With an emotional hug, Jim rose and exited the room.

Rudy was next to speak with Steve. “Steve, I want to tell you how proud I am of you two. I once told Oscar that the reward and recognition I got for creating bionics was in seeing you function and I still believe it. It is so amazing that you two have had the strength and determination to get through it all. Both of the accidents, the recoveries, her death- and then amnesia, the battles with the awful virus, and now, here you are on your wedding day. I’m overjoyed for you Steve.”

“Thanks Rudy, for everything.” Steve looked up at him with a confident smile. Rudy quickly stepped into the hall. This left only Oscar and Steve in the room.

Oscar took a chair from a small table and sat down in front of Steve. “Steve, I just want to echo them in one thing. I’ve never made a better choice than I did the day Rudy and I decided to make you our bionic man. Well, maybe equaled with the day you convinced me to make Jaime the bionic woman. I’ve never once regretted it and it has made my life so much more complete. I’ve received not only my two best agents, but my two closest friends, and I am so glad this day has finally come. Alright, are you ready, Pal? Oscar nodded to the door.

Steve gave one last glance to the reflection and nodded. “You got the rings?”

“Of course I do! Where would I have lost them since you asked me two minutes ago!”

“Alright! Alright! Let’s go.” Steve beamed.

“You got it.” Oscar wheeled his friend out into the hall and to their place in the sanctuary.

When Jaime stepped down the aisle on the arm of Steve’s stepfather, the 3 gentlemen couldn’t believe how beautiful she looked. Rudy and Oscar stared wide-eyed while Steve just grinned, knowingly. When Jaime reached her spot, up front, she noticed Steve wasn’t where he should have been, next to her. Instead he calmly sat about 10 paces off to the side. She gave him a questioning glance.

He smiled. “Jaime, I don’t want to upstage your entrance but this is something I need to do. As you’ll remember, for Christmas, I wished for you to be my wife, and I got it. Now, for a wedding gift to you, I’ve worked at something very special. It is something that we’ve been wishing for, for several months. I know you’ll like it!” With all eyes on him, Steve carefully sat forward in his chair and pushed into a standing position. Carefully balancing and taking only tiny steps, he walked to his bride. His steps were shaky and unsteady, but he was walking.

She gasped and covered her face with her hands. She pulled them down finally to reveal a wide smile and a face damp with tears. They latched on to each other’s arm and held tight. After a quick nod from Oscar, the pastor began the ceremony. It went uneventfully with each participant doing their part at the proper time. Steve had to fight at the urge to jump the gun and say “I do” before it was time. Finally, they were pronounced man and wife and Steve was told to “kiss the bride.”

With joy, Steve turned in to his bride and held her tightly in his arms. His damp blue eyes darted all over her face, taking in his new life’s partner. They moved together and kissed. The small gathering all applauded and cheered.

A few minutes later, after the group had walked outside, Oscar went back in to retrieve the chair for Steve, and he spied something shiny on the ground. When he picked it up, he realized that again he had found Steve’s lucky pen. Astounded, he slipped it into his pocket and went outside. He interrupted the congratulations for a moment to give it to Steve. “Hey, look what I found. I guess you must have dropped it.”

Steve smiled at it for a minute, and then spoke. “You know, I don’t think I need it anymore.”

Suddenly, both Steve and Jaime had an idea. With a quick nod, Steve slipped the pen firmly into her bouquet. Then, positioning their bionic arms together, they pulled back, and let it fly, a mile into the sky. The group began to cheer but was interrupted by a startled, “Oh my!!” from a voice behind them. There, the pastor stood wide-eyed with a look of terror, surprise, and questioning on his face. He scurried away.

Turning towards each other, the group burst into laughter and their joyous sounds filled the air with love.
