Yes PSP HW was too tight for such concept. PW should have been developed as a MGS V on next gens and they should have take 6-7 years to develop it.

I'm probably alone here, but I hated A Quiet Exit. Not because of the story, I hated the tank fights.
Might not have minded as much if I were actually allowed to quit the fucking mission and go back to the ACC to prepare myself better, but whatever.

I wasn't too happy upon finding out that all that work I did was for nothing though, as Quiet still left.

...I killed her in my second playthrough.
If you use the butterfly emblem you can skip sideops 150 and mission 45, and keep her for as long as you use the emblem

Welcome to forums mate :). The tank fight was painful lol, because that last one kept owning me even when I tried to hide behind the building, tried stay on the cliff etc. But after few deaths finally got it down.

Hi guys, it's time for me to share my opinion of The Phantom Pain. Be warned though, this is a long post

Let my start off by saying I don't mind the twist and it was really to be expected for anyone who was into previous trailers and paid attention. Medic's covered face, voiced by Kiefer just like Snake and Ishmael, third helicopter crash survivor ("what about him?") etc. I was actually looking forward to see some mind fucks, especially with the supposed hallucinations caused by shrapnel and presence of Psycho Mantis in the game. I'll elaborate on that later.

First few hours:
The game builds the hype with the very first scene. We see Snake covered in blood in Outer Heaven and can hear there is a battle outside. I instantly thought: oh boy, Big Boss really becomes a demon a we will see the whole process from the awakening, to ending up as the supposed villain and ruler of Outer Heaven. The whole series began there, and this is where it should end. Are we finally getting the real "missing link"?

The hospital intro is very immersive. I could really feel the panic and confusion of the protagonist. It indeed does feel like "the whole world wants you dead". There are so many questions, who is Ishmael really? What is up with this face surgery? Did it even happen or the doctor died before this could happen? What is Quiet doing here, in clothes and actually speaking. The fire man and soldiers both seem to want me dead yet they fight between each other too. What the hell is going on?! But there is no time to ask, first we have to get the hell out of here! After the escape Ocelot fills us in and we are ready for the first real mission.

After rescuing Kaz, he feels like he should be. He spent whole 9 years haunted by phantoms, he instantly goes back to the crash and expresses his lust for revenge. Very good! I sympathize with him as I spent 18 months (since playing Ground Zeroes) and I kept thinking about all this. Waiting for TPP I played GZ so many times, relived it often just like Kaz did. We are back and this time we are serious! At that point I was really excited to see the story unfold...

After that story slows down a lot and it makes sense. We have great ambitions and revenge in mind, but the reality is that first we have to go down to earth and actually get back to business and build our army. This is what we spend a lot of time on and this is how it is supposed to be. But this goes on and on and I was getting nervous that there is too much effort spent on these filler missions and I wanted the story to take off ASAP. It eventually does, more and more stuff is explained and finally we get the revenge. It was a decent typical good vs evil story, but don't tell me this is it? I am nervous again and then BAM! Chapter 2 trailer.

I am excited again and I say to myself "yeah! NOW the REAL game begins! Big Boss finally expressing his suffering over lost men, Huey and Quiet torture, Eli causing problems, Paz, Eli in Sahelanthropus, Big Boss smashing the mirror. At this point I seriously thought that this is where the real story begins and will see Snake descent into darkness and all the good stuff promised.

Let me just quickly conclude that chapter 2 felt unfinished, pacing was bad, lacks real direction and fails to meet any of my expectations.

Quiet and her story:
She starts of as intriguing character with unknown motives but clearly with a bigger role to play. Quiet is also obvious fan service, however justified story-wise. We know nothing about her, but we get to work together and develop some nice bond and understanding without even using words. Switching sides just because she suddenly "felt in love with the legend" is a bit lame reason. Even Ocelot admitted to his bromance with Snake but that bromance was well developed in MGS3. With every Snake's action witnessed by Ocelot, his admiration for Snake grew steadily. But what's up with Quiet? It looks like a teen crush. She tried to kill him at hospital and tried to do so again during the boss fight so what happened? Oh uh he is such a good fighter! And he spared my life, not like for interrogation or something, he must've developed feelings for me. I think I'm in love. Seriously, she looks like a silly teen to me. There was no time and opportunities to develop any real chemistry between them. Since then she clearly switched to Big Boss's side. She also knew quite a bit and obviously wanted to help but couldn't because she can't speak english. How come nobody thought of giving her pen and paper? Even they interrogated her and no one thought of that? I know what Kojima wanted to show with this character, how communication without language is difficult and she is supposed to show us what a terrifying plan Skull Face had with destroying english language. But that plot hole is just too big, I mean seriously. Pen and paper.

Her character is underdeveloped. All we know about her is that she worked for Skull Face, was sent to kill Snake, got burned and recovered with parasite therapy and sent again to kill Snake and spread the infection. But she suddenly fell in love and decided to help Snake. This is why her death was not as touching for me as it was probably supposed to be. And the whole ending is so cliche. In a sandstorm, one soldier randomly breaks off the formation, happens to get close to where they are, there also happens to be a snake. Snake happens to be one of the venomous (10% of snakes are venomous if I remember correctly) and of course Venom Snake gets bitten by a venomous snake. Quiet is forced to speak and sacrifice her life to save her beloved. Writing here felt really weak and uncreative, I expected more from Kojima.

The truth ending:
Like I said the twist was expected but these extra truth scenes are not satisfying. The dialogue with real Big Boss was so short, couldn't they at least discuss shortly what is Big Boss up to? Even with the knowledge of truth Ishmael didn't feel like Big Boss at all, but here he got this MGS3 Snake feel. In this short scene he feels more like Snake we knew than Venom in the entire game which is done really well if this was on purpose. This scene also made me feel like I think Snake felt in MGS3 ending. After all the effort and being deprived of person we cared about (we are deprived of the real Big Boss just like Snake is deprived of The Boss) he learns the truth from a recording like Venom does. And Big Boss wears clothes just like Eva when she also leaves on a bike while we learn the truth. I left the console with void inside me, like Naked Snake left that room with award. That is how I experienced it and I really like it, strong and unique experience.

Unfulfilled promises:
This game gave me phantom pain but not because of the twist itself, it's just that it's nothing like it was advertised to be by Kojima. It was supposed to be about Snake breaking bad which did not happen, actually it's the opposite. Snake is a really good guy, even too good. He is as good and moral as one can be as a soldier. MGS V was meant to touch various serious taboos, where are those taboos? Failed rape attempt at Quiet? Killing your own infected men which is the only right choice there? Ground Zeroes was more hardcore imo with vagina bomb and the gut scene. Kojima also mentioned ability to return to Camp Omega in TPP for 'something cool that can only be done in video games'. I was really looking forward to it but it's not there.

Wasted opportunity: hallucinations
Early in the game we are warned that shrapnel may cause hallucinations, especially after being hit. I was hoping to see this theme being used both in gameplay and especially in the story to create confusing and mysterious moments. Combined with presence of Psycho Mantis, for some time in the game I kept wondering what could be real and what not. Is the Fire Man even real? Or skulls? Unless I'm wrong, everything turned out to be real and this theme was not really used. Which is strange because the only confirmed hallucination is Paz side quest. I really liked it and was hoping to see more stuff like this but that's all we get. Paz scenes show that Venom has SERIOUS hallucination capabilities. If only we got some more...

Unfinished story elements:
What happened with Eli and Mantis? And what's with Kaz's eyes? It is hinted by Code Talker that Kaz has parasites. What does "Operation Intrude N313" tape contain? Was Solid sent to Outer Heaven to get rid of Solid or Venom? How Venom handled the truth personally? We know nothing about him. I guess he was made blank so the player can imagine to be the medic but blank characters just doesn't work in MGS. Does real Big Boss go through surgery too? It doesn't look like it, but Ocelot gives him documents with medic's real face. Is it just a memento or does he have to change face too? When did Big Boss wake up? How come Big Boss had to wake up from the coma on his own but they managed to wake up the medic when needed? Did they just keep him on purpose that long in a coma? So they can pull off the body double twist? If so that's just cruel.

Big Boss sucks as a leader:
This is what started in Peace Walker. We are told that Big Boss has a huge charisma (Paz says so in the diary in PW) and good leadership skills like a huge leader indeed should have. But that is bullshit, Snake in PW acts like a depressed teen. This is so unrealistic and in real life big leaders with followers are always charismatic and good speakers. Why do people even follow Big Boss? Because he is a good fighter? This is what I hoped to see fixed in TPP but here it's even worse. Venom doesn't speak at all and is even more lost than Snake in PW. "Kaz, tell me what to do. Tell me how you used to". I know Venom is confused as he should be after all this mind fuckery and personality change but I can't get over the fact how both Big Bosses suck as leaders. To me, Kaz is the real Big Boss. Snake is just an icon and a very good soldier but nothing more.

Let me speak quickly on characters:

KAZ: the best TPP character in my opinion. The most authentic one and human like. He is haunted by phantoms and lusts revenge. That cheerful Kaz from Peace Walker died in the chopper 9 years ago. He is well written and greatly performed by Robin Atkin Downes.

HUEY: mad scientist. I love how he turned out to be a nutcase, lying to everyone and maybe even himself. He is really well done and I have to admit, that for quite some time I didn't know what to think about him. Was he lying or not? Convincing character.

OCELOT: not really much to say about him. To me he is too much reasonable and a good guy. In previous MGS games and even here by Kaz it's implied that ocelot loves to torture and I hoped to see some serious torture scenes, especially after all the taboo talk by Kojima but in reality Ocelot is really cool and reasonable. The torture scene in GTA V was more hardcore than anything in TPP...

SKULL FACE: I enjoyed his voice acting and his reasoning, motives. Good classic villain.

CODE TALKER: played his role in the story well. I just found him bragging way too much about vocal chord parasites and his tapes were hard for me to endure.

ELI: he totally feels like Liquid. I loved Liquid's speeches and voice acting in MGS1 and here Eli's accent was also a pleasure for me to listen. Too bad that he doesn't say more than few short sentences, I really wanted to hear him speak a bit more.

MEDIC/VENOM SNAKE: I'll cut him some slack because of what he went through, of course he is confused. BUT he was there in the helicopter and as we see with Paz side quest, he can't get over what happened and how he failed to find the second bomb which not only caused Paz to die but the whole crash. He should be just as angry at Skull Face as Kaz is, but he just doesn't seem to give a shit about anything at all. And if there is one moment where he should speak, it was the jeep ride with Skull Face. Seriously? After all that pain and suffering caused by Skull Face 9 years ago, Venom has nothing to say? And like I mentioned moment before, how can people even follow him? Have you ever seen a big leader with big following who doesn't say a thing?

REAL BIG BOSS: he feels out of character to me. He doesn't give a shit about revenge? Or Kaz? Is he a coward now? The whole world wants him dead so he creates a decoy to take attention away form himself and goes into hiding, work in the shadows. That doesn't seem like something any Snake would do. And "the whole world wants you dead"? I didn't feel that in the game, more like Skull Face wants you dead. So instead of being angry at Skull Face and going for revenge, he gets scared and goes into hiding. This is not a legend he is made out to be...

ABOUT GAMEPLAY and more technical aspect of The Phantom Pain:

PROS:
This game is huge, I loved Ground Zeroes gameplay and this is dream come true. Gameplay is very immersive and satisfying. It encourages creativity and enemies adapts to you really well. You abuse headshots? They start to equip helmets. Abusing gas grenades? They get gas masks. Sneak a lot around? Prepare for claymores. Abusing rambo style? Be ready to face some heavy almost Iron Man like suits. It works very well and encouraged me to play different styles. Tranq style, ghost sneaking style, rambo style, distraction style with decoys, c-4s, barking, Quiet drawing away attention from me. Enemy AI is done really well except minor flaws but it still works great in open world stealth game.

There is also great feeling of progression. There are new weapons developed, unique buddies with abilities to unlock, intel team marking area of enemy presence. You really feel like your army is growing and so are you, both in equipment and experience. After 100 hours I still like to play the game just for the gameplay, it's just so damn satisfying.

As expected of Kojima, there is ton of attention to details and some easter eggs. For example I was really surprised to see that a stunned soldier with face in a pool of water died after a while. I can't think of other nice details right now but I know there are many. Weapon customization is also another nice feature even though I only used it to insert a suppressor into tranq sniper rifle.

Cutscenes are beautiful and very immersive due to one shot camera. I think it was a good idea to make the cutscenes meaty and leave pure talking in the tapes. In previous games there is a lot of codec talk and cutscenes that are just showing people talking. I prefer it that way, dialogues and monologues don't stop my flow and I can listen to the details on tapes when I'm in the mood.

CONS:
Too many filler story missions. I wish more were dedicated to personal motives of Snake and Kaz.
The motherbase feels empty and there isn't anything to do there, I guess the main purpose is FOB gameplay. We were told that we will be able to see Ocelot in the base, other soldiers training but it doesn't happen. Aside from Paz, Checking out Quiet once or twice and Huey's place, there is nothing to do/see there.

I highly dislike that we are forced to play FOB. The idea is pretty good but I think that most of us at that point want to continue story and grow their main base and not worry about losing personnel and resources due to attacks. This should be end game feature and be optional.
With the open world maps, my only real complain about their design is that the animals are so rare. We only have few animals here and there and their only purpose is to collect them, they don't feel like a part of alive environment like it did in MGS3.

I wish there was more music on the tapes, especially that we cannot import our own music after all (except PC). They have rights to so many great songs and game size is not really an issue, where is Nuclear, Not your kind of people, Here's to you and other songs from GZ, and many, many more?

Side ops. Peace Walker had some really fun side ops like pooyan, dates, ghost hunting, dinosaurs, taking photos of weird guys. Here it is only extract/eliminate soldier/prisoner/vehicle. I am pretty sure that Kojima would do those if he had time but the fact stands, that Side Ops lack variety. Oh and so many mine clearing missions, really? And the "highly skilled' targets are never really highly skilled at all, most of the time worse than a random guy around. It would be more motivating if they really were decent.

Inconsistent climbing over obstacles. There are moments when you can't climb over small obstacles and sometimes you can jump up really high. Apparently you can climb only where creators wanted you to. Minor complaint but noticeable.

Loss of Quiet. Yeah I know, phantom pain. And normally I wouldn't mind losing one gameplay feature, but this game is so huge, especially for someone like me who will be replaying many missions to improve score, try different things and complete tasks. We are talking maybe another 100 hours. She was a really well done buddy and without her, there isn't enough variety with Buddies imo for stealthy playstyle, pretty much only DD.

Phew, that was a lot more writing than I expected. I'll conclude my opinion with saying this: The Phantom Pain is a great game, but a weak MGS.

I agree, also the status of Quiet is kinda left ambiguous, its clear she's leaving to avoid an epidemic but are the parasites lethal to a person without lungs? Either way it was a weak ending that felt rushed and thats probably the case.

I don't know but I was expecting far more crazy stuff :
Something like perhaps fighting 4 or 5 Sahelantropusses, transforming / assembling into a gigantic one (one Sahel per arm and legs), and a principal one different and harder to beat for the torso + head.
This final battle could have taken place on some kind of Avengers-helicarrier-like platform named Arsenal-Gear 0.3b (in which we would have also to do a lot of stuff like in Arsenal), or even in space and we could have fight him on-board of Metal Gear "Goliath", a MG able to chase this "Sahelantropus x 5" in space, and designed by Emmerich on our MB, for this special purpose.
I mean where is my duel with Snake riding a MG, ala MGS IV's "Rex VS Ray" battle ???
Well I was not expecting that much but something more in this spirit. :/
I'm sorry, but you shouldn't have been expecting any of that. Why would you? What indication gave you that we'd be fighting a Power Rangers-like Metal Gear this time around in space?

Thanks for the welcome. I'm glad to be here.

I don't really think the tank fight should have been in the game, to be honest. We spent the entire game fighting (or rather, avoiding them at all costs) those things with guerrilla warfare, anti-tank mines, and fulton recovery balloons, why would we be pitted against them head on?

Aside from that, I loved every moment of the game. I didn't like the story's execution [save for Mission 43 and the Wolbachia arc], but I can't say I didn't enjoy it.

Hi Brothers!!... finally a place where i can share my thoughts about MGSV story (there are other places but i like the community here) without spoil anyone. instead of posting a big ass post, i'll just comment and reply frecuently sharing my impresions of the game.

For now i'll just say that i wish that i could have played MGSV like i did with the others of the series, that is without knowing much about the plot or the content of the game, those times were amazing because it was easier to go black out and know nothing, so the impact of the plot twist was more powerfull.

i loved the game but is not my MGS favorite, also i was expecting a lot more in terms of story, about gameplay this is the best game i have played so far, period.

Saludos!

The Leguywhodrowned, despite how much I love TPP, you really should play Peace Walker. It is a fantastic game. Actually by playing PW, you'll see how TPP is PW 2.0. They took what was really good about the design of PW (a lot of it was good) and perfected and added to it in TPP. Gives you even more appreciation towards the gameplay of MGSV.

Nope you are not alone, worst mission in the game.

Stupid sudden infinite soviet army
Sudden forced combat mission when you expected a stealth mission and can't restart to change your gear, you have to order it all in
The one weapon they give you sucks
The final tanks kill you instantly even with splash damage.

I literally spent 2 hours restarting the last 2 waves of vehicles before I completed the mission. I RARELY EVER quit playing a video game, but let me tell you one thing, the only reason I didn't permanently stop playing the game right there and then was because I hadn't finished the main story yet.

I'm glad someone agrees. Whenever I talk about this mission, all I hear is how good it is.
When frankly, this mission makes me wish I'd restarted the game of my own will.

Who game tested this mission? It's not fun and it doesn't work with the kind of game this is.

Completely agree, Like COMPLETELY, lol.

Though I will clear one thing up for you. They did try to get Quiet to communicate through pen and paper but she wouldn't have any of it. It isn't that she couldn't talk, it is that she didn't want to at all, and while that does clear up one thing it raises other questions and breaks things. For example when Quiet attacks one of our men and she knows he is infected and tries to cut out his tongue so he can't talk anymore, she simply goes ape shit on the guy instead of telling *cough* writing us anything, and even when confronted she simply leaves as if she is saying "You won't let me randomly cut out this guys face suddenly for no reason? FINE I won't even tell you why!" and takes off, KIND OF AN IMPORTANT THING TO NOT TELL US QUIET! she can communicate through writing she just chooses not too, though why is beyond me, probably just to be more annoying and confusing when she could easily make everyone like her and clear everything up, guess she likes living a SERIOUSLY overly complicated life, lol.

EDIT: Also @Raskalov I can tell you who game tested mission 45, the kind of people whom knew what kind of mission it was going to be and had/brought along what they needed, and also knows how to easily deal with one shot instant death tanks with ease, those are the kind of people that let that mission slip through in it's current state, lol.

ignore me
MGS V was full of bullshit scenes. I still laugh at allowing Liquid to stay in helicopter when they went to meet Skull Face and letting again blond kid steal your Metal Gear.
