![]() I was playing some of the older MGS games the other day and it made me think about overall story of Metal Gear. Now, almost 4 years after finishing Metal Gear Solid 4 I have found myself questioning if story of "Guns of the Patriots" was as good as I believed it to be at the time. After the ending of "Sons of Liberty" we had lots and lots of questions about basically everything. "Snake Eater" didn't have the answers we craved. So the explanation were given to us in MGS 4. However looking back I can't help but feel sense of disappointment. Essentially nano-machines were reason to everything. Ocelots dedication to become Liquid Snake didn't make much sense to me and the whole think felt kind of rushed. I would like to know what do you guys think? I think Kojima realized he fucked up with the arm-thing and made up some slightly less idiotic bullshit in MGS4 to cover it up. And Vamp? So nanomachineoverdose or something patches his wounds up, okay... What about the running on water/vertical walls -part? Feels like he was intended to be something extraordinary instead of just plain boring vampire, but Kojima couldn't really nail it down, so nanomachines. |

I'm playing through Snake Eater right now, and it answers more than you've cared to access. From the origins of the first prototype Metal Gear, to FOX Unit, to Ocelot, to the indoctrination of Big Boss by The Boss, to the philosophers' legacy, and so on, and so on. There was a ton of back story and pieces of the puzzles unveiled in MGS3. At the time MGS needed Snake Eater more than it did Guns of the Patriots, in my opinion. I'm not prepared to dissect the story of MGS4 at the moment, but as for nanomachines, Metal Gear Solid isn't the first game to incorporate the idea of proxy wars and technorganic human enhancements. Hypothetically speaking, it is likely to be the next phase of human evolution, albeit not as soon as Kojima's story asks us to believe. It is, though, an alternate timeline afterall - like with, say, Captain America, or Spider-man. As for Vamp, what did you expect from a Metal Gear Solid game? you had already been introduced to surreal supernatural beings before, ie. Psycho Mantis and Vulcan Raven. Kojima DOES try to play both sides of reality and sci-fi. I don't have a problem with this, nor do I care much to call bullshit on it. There are other aspects of this video game series that outweigh the minuscule contradictions. That's something I learned from being a faithful Resident Evil fan *zing!* |

There area ton of things explained by nanomachines in MGS2. And in MGS1 it was all about Foxdie. I don't see what the problem is with nanomachines myself :s |

yeah, tbh I was happy with how they ended MGS4, though I really do kinda wish Snake had died in the end... as now all he has left is a more painful slower death :/ |

Agreed with Baldgye over here, he should've just shot himself in the end. However, some might say that isn't a soldier's way to die. |

I think it doesn't really make a difference wether he shot himself or not. Solid Snake is gone, he 'died' in a way. David gets to live on for a little while, but he won't be doing much more than wandering the world. It's over. |

I think it was fine how it ended with Snake, but I hated how they brought BB back just to instantly have him killed. |

Still, it made sense to me. Everything came full circle, the one who started everything was the one who ended it. Also, I really like his dialogue, and that scene in general. |

It was a pretty scene, but didn't require BB's death tbh. It was a pretty scene and had stuff to point out, so it wasn't meaningless. I just think it didn't require BB's death. He could have just smoked his cigar and walked off to somewhere. EDIT: What's wrong with my post??? What's with the blue line? I can't remove it, nor the first sentence. Hm, I don't know... The funny thing is, that's basically what Snake did and people want him to die.

That's because he's terminal. BB was in good health for an old man. |

Only because he was made from chunks of Liquid and Solidus. And you don't know what he looks like under that trench coat.

Could be he wouldn't have had long to live either, but I still think he should have survived that scene. The way he appeared alive, yet died soon anyway, felt cheap to me. |

The ending was brilliant! I wouldn't want to see snake shoot himself. At least he kept his dignity... Aside from all of them seizures |

Started my story playthrough of it today, just now finished ACT 1. I'm not really connecting with the story at all tbh.. I'm only 1 act in but so far there really isn't a whole lot that's made me connect with it, I don't care for the new characters in the rat patrol team and Johnny's just annoying, I mean literally shitting himself in front of me, I love the MGS gags and I love that they're not completely serious games but Johnny in this is just a little too much. It's not that I'm a pussy that can't take shitting, it just isn't very funny Middle Eastern setting, I like the 2nd and 3rd areas and the last one, the others are just annoying me with explosions everywhere. ACT 2 has some good ones as well but it feels pretty silly to be playing through it, knowing that after ACT 2 I have more or less nothing to enjoy from a gameplay standpoint anymore, I mean Shadow Moses will be awesome, but it's a really short act and on your 15th playthrough it doesn't have the same impact on you that it makes you wanna cover every inch of the place again, still there's the Crying Wolf battle. Game just doesn't have the soul the other titles had. I still like the game, altho since I've played it so much, and it having, in my opinion, pretty fucking bland settings, it just doesn't have the same replay value the others had, since there you don't mind you're running around the same place again because you like it. It is sort of just a first re-impression of the story since I've only finished act 1 maybe things will change, but all the other titles have had fantastic starts that really makes you wanna unfold more of the story, even on replays, MGS4 just doesn't have this for me. ACT 2 does have a pretty good start, I like that the patriots are being brought up and stuff Edited by Cartman, Feb 28 2012, 09:41 PM.

The Rat Patrol members are really just side characters, they aren't important at all. I do agree with you that the setting isn't as good as in the other Metal Gears, it doesn't feel as alive. But I do like other aspects of the game a lot. |

Oh, yeah I know they're barely side characters, so I'm definitely aware that picking on them is nitpicking, but still. |

Well I can't say they are fleshed out characters. But at least other characters got a lot of screen time. And I always like Drebin, I think he's great. |
