I disagree, those are some of my favorite parts in the game. Yeah, overdramatic, maybe. That's kind of how Metal Gear is. 'It rained on the day I was born' isn't meant to be taken literally, that is a metaphor, Raiden means that he was pretty much 'cursed' his entire life, and looking at his youth it isn't so surprising for him to say this. I doubt he actually means he didn't like the weather. :P

I just can't take "It even rained the day I was born" as a metaphor, it sounds too stupid to be meant as one. It is an awful one if it's meant to be one, he says it in a weird way. I just don't like his dialogue in this game one bit.

MGS can definitely be overdramatic, but Raiden came from being a totally different character so when he's turned into Gray Fox on acid with worse worse characterization and writing it just .. doesn't feel right at all..

MGS2 Raiden > MGS4 Raiden
Other way around for me, although I'm personally indifferent on both game's stories. You can nitpick the voice acting or the state of Raiden physically, for example, but I feel he makes for a better supporting character in MGS4 than he ever was as a 'fake' primary/lead in MGS2. The transition from being a stoic and static character (that of an assassin/a weapon) to someone who becomes aware of those reaching out for him and his potential purpose in life (don't laugh: A FAMILY MAN!) was well worth it IMO.

As for that quote you're complaining about, Cartman, you mentioned part of Snake's response to it, but I think the meaning of it flew right over your head, as Nyxus explained. Snake: You've got it all wrong. You were the lightning in that rain. You can still shine through the darkness.

I'm not saying it's some brilliant philosophical scene, but it's not a terribly corny/cheesy one either. Infact, I thought the way Snake delivered that line was really memorable - one of the advantages of having Old Snake is that when he did come off as sincere and genuine it was easily noticed.

You like Raiden more in MGS4? Sigh... Matieo, how are we ever gonna get along (jk)

I appreciate the concern, but I'm not sure how "You were the lightning in that rain" is supposed to go over my head. It's pretty clear what he means by it. It's a metaphor

But I can't take what Raiden says as one, Snake's can be taken as one (Even though it's a pretty cringe worthy line) but "It even rained the day I was born" really, really isn't metaphor material, it's just random bitching, they basically have Raiden say it just so they could have Snake say the lightning thing back, which would later become his new thing

Please don't feel forced to continue this, because I really don't wanna start an argument over a pretty clear line in a video game, you liked it, I did not. We can end it at that.

Haha. The character, yes, I do. It's just a preference of mine anyways - hey we agreed on Tara's theme atleast. I wasn't planning on it.

Vamp and Raiden are the two most stupid things in MGS4, they would be better without it. They just turned him into a ninja because they wanted to create a nostalgia effect to Grey Fox. In which they failed miserably in my opinion. I'm playing through MGS2 right now and he's much much better.

As for that line, I agree with Cartman.

Even though I prefer Raiden's character in MGS2, I still like Raiden in MGS4. It's a love/hate thing I guess. Either way. Let's get back on topic.

Well yes, this a MGS4 thread. But the MGS2 and MGS4 Raiden comparison has already taken place.

That's really one of Hideo's strong points as a designer, though, creating that sense of familiarity throughout the series. Do you know that saying: Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. The idea wasn't to have Raiden follow the same path of Frank Jaeger - just like Snake wasn't meant to follow in the footsteps of Big Boss in the end. It's a reoccurring trend in the series - separating one's self from the mistakes of others. I don't think it's fair to say the ONLY reason they made Raiden a ninja was because Grey Fox has always been in demand, and that he failed because he's not as cool as Grey Fox or whatever. I think the way Kojima toyed with the design may come off as superficial, but I personally think it goes deeper than being purely fanfare.

Having said that I can kinda understand why some people didn't like the whole Vamp/Raiden feud - how it could come off as 'out of place'.

My favorite game, the gameplay, cutscenes , story and everything put every game in the series beneath it.

After replaying it I love it more than before, unlike many others. However there's quite a lot I would change. Especially Raiden's godlike abilities. On one hand, he can have these super powers but they should've just let him die after Outer Haven crushed him. Or they take away his abilities (and scenes) but letting him alive. And oh god, the no arms fight scene is horrible. Another thing I disliked was the whole epilogue sequence.. Talk about overexposition. The epilogue in 2 and 3 felt a lot better.

Hmm... I thought the no arms fight scene was awesome, and the epilogue is one of my favorite parts in the entire series. So extremely well made.

I dunno, a lot of it just felt weird. Like Ed and Jonathan still being alive. Raiden's scene was pretty good but cause I thought he should've died earlier I didn't quite like it.

I thought with Eplogue you only meant the final graveyard scene.
