Everyone's Motives

 I recently purchased the MGS HD Collection and have decided to play through all the games again except MGS1 (finished it pretty recently again). I haven't gone through the entire series like this since finishing MGS4 four years ago.

Anyway, I just finished MGS2 and am trying to pay attention to the story in immense detail. I am trying to figure out what everyone's motives are.

Liquid, Solid and Solidus all have the eventual aim of destroying The Patriots right? I understand most of the stuff regarding Solidus, but I find Solid and Liquid pretty similar. They both want to free the people by destroying The Patriots but are pretty much arch enemies. I know Liquid has the personal grudge on Snake but they are basically trying to achieve the same thing. Why is Solid Snake so determined to stop Liquid if they are going for the same goal? Is it because Liquid would have effectively replaced The Patriots with himself?

 I don't feel like explaining what I think about this plot and so on (especially in english) , but MGS wouldn't be MGS if everything was exactly as it seems at first.
