Alrighty, so this is some shit I've had goin' through my head for years. Started thinking about this about a year after Snake Eater had released, I've had some notes written down here and there and have never really sat down to share them with anyone, so I'm doing that now, with you guys. My biggest reason for even thinking of any of this stuff is simply because during my playthrough of Metal Gear Solid 3, I had instantly fallen in love with The Joy. Her back story was interesting to me, and seeing her in action was incredible. I loved her design, from her simple fatigues to her stark white and platinum-lined sneaking suit. I consider her my favourite character in the franchise. The title might sound silly but I'll explain it soon enough. So anyway, this is pretty much going to be a huge dump of what I would love to see in a game based on The Joy. Discussion is obviously very welcome and I would love to hear your thoughts, no doubt. Let's begin with a logo I made (simple lol) and an overview I made from scratch using stock artwork, cutout buttons and text from the internet as well as a general layout idea taken from the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection overview screens. Font is a tiny bit off but that's alright. Regardless, they are just quick works, so they are a bit shoddy. Click them for full size versions. Anyway, everything that follows is all my own work, these are my own words and thoughts, etc. Nothing is forged, though I do reference the games at times, for obvious reasons. ![]() ![]() We'll be going over the following items:
Now, for starters, let's explain the title of the game. Metal Gear Solid: Pride and Joy. Pride is in reference to the pride of a lion, or tiger. A pride is a collective group of young males and females, often cubs, that are watched over and protected by a single female lion or tiger. This leads us to The Joy, who plays the role of the watchful mother, much like is explained in Metal Gear Solid 3. I understand the title is simple, and straight forward, and a bit detached from the series usual ''deep'' and often foreboding sub-titles. But I had thought of this name quite some time ago and it indeed sticks, in my opinion, and draws a very simple line to definition. At any rate, this is the reason for my choosing of this title and I feel it fits very well. Moreso than ''Metal Gear Joy'' or simply ''Metal Gear Solid: The Joy'' as a lot of people seem to suggest. Though I had thought ''Metal Gear Solid: Voyevoda'' sounded neat at one point. On another note, you may be wondering why the timeline is so long. 1941 to 1962 is a span of 21 years, surely this game would be one of the largest in the franchise, no? No, it wouldn't. The Joy has a long career under her belt, sure, but it wouldn't need to be included in its entirety. It could indeed cut, or ''jump'' ahead a few years between acts to speed things up. I feel the timeline is needed though, to fully understand and appreciate The Joy as a solider in her decisions leading up to her role in the events of the Virtuous Mission. It is also important to note The Joy will be referred to as nothing but The Joy in this game. Right then, with the timeline in place, what kind of events can we expect? Well, if you know even a shred of history, you'd know 1941 is the year World War II had taken place, and as I know you all know, The Joy was there on means of capturing important Germanic soldiers to gather information after being invited to the SAS to serve as a special advisor. The importance of this information is these events, the captures, were the very basis for her development of the hand to hand close quarters combat we know as CQC. So, naturally, the game could open up with her either in training; a simple tutorial perhaps, as different as that would be for the series. This portion of the game would introduce very basic CQC techniques. And I do mean basic. Things such as the stable 3-hit melee attack the series is known for, and maybe one or two added moves but nothing more. I'll explain why later. Once the player is comfortable with these controls and understands how to utilize CQC, they move on. The player is treated to a 72 hour long cutscene in true Kojima fashion and is given their objectives to capture a high profile Germanic officer, or Gestapo, that holds information about the development of a specific weapon. No, not a Metal Gear. Yes, I know you're probably thinking ''But Scotia, this is a Metal Gear game, it has to have a Metal Gear in it!'' while it would be logical, it can't be done due to the franchise's storyline. So, yes, this would be the first Metal Gear title without a true Metal Gear. But this doesn't mean there wouldn't be some form of ''mech'' or anything. There will also be a point in the game in which the player can seek out and recruit members for Cobra Unit. These members are none other than The Fear, The Pain, The Sorrow, The Fury and The End, naturally. Once recruited and formed, Cobra Unit would accompany the player on missions, but only as ''background'' AI so as to not impose on the player's participation. The game is about The Joy, so naturally she should be the only one on screen and or being controlled. Generally, the game will follow the events that The Joy took part in, starting with the year 1941. have a middle ground to establish her connection to Cobra Unit (after she forms the unit of course) as well as when she meets Jack and ending during the year of 1962, two years before the events of Metal Gear Solid 3. And of course, the game should also feature the birth of Ocelot, and later the Death of The Sorrow. The player would also experience the creation of Unit FOX. Whether or not some of these events will be cutscenes or forms of gameplay, I'm unsure. That is something we can all discuss, hopefully. One particular event would be the infiltration of Los Alamos and assassination of John Von Neumann, a scientist involved in the Manhattan Project which results in The Joy being struck by a bullet and ending up in a coma, a key moment in the game that could serve as a time gap to lead into the year 1944 during the time of D-Day. The player would also take part in a gameplay segment of the development of the HALO jump. And how cool would it be, to take on the task she is assigned during the Mercury mission in space? Over the course of the entire game, your CQC attacks become stronger, are more effective, and allow such things as a short-distance sprint, much like we see The Joy do in Snake Eater, in order to run up on opposing soldiers and field strip their firearms to simple things such as knockouts and taking a soldier hostage and or placing them under submission with ground holds via CQC. Unlike past games, in order to perform CQC attacks, the player must unequip any firearm they have. This frees up the R1 button, to allow a ''stance''. Outside of this stance, the simple CQC attacks detailed earlier are available, but within this CQC stance that is toggled by tapping R1, the player can perform stronger and more efficient CQC maneuvers. I am getting real tired of typing ''CQC'' by the way, lol. At any rate, R1 would be a ''hotkey'' of sorts. You would use it to enter and exit the dedicated CQC stance, and you can tap then hold it to perform a short-distance sprint, as mentioned earlier. When a firearm is equipped, R1 acts as it does in all previous games of the franchise. In terms of other weapons outside of your typical standard issue handgun you can procure weapons on site, just as you do in all Metal Gear Solid titles. A new mechanic that I think would be rather neat is salvaging materials. Seeing as The Joy is very capable of field stripping any firearm, I feel this fact coupled with scarce ammunition and or degradable firearms could prove to be quite neat. Say you are low on rounds for your Colt 1911, you could perform a field strip on a soldier, and take the ammo from his handgun afterward, rather than throwing it away. This would provide ammo for the player, though there would be the traditional ammo caches we all know and love. You could also salvage suppressors this way, if you were to run out of your own. This is, of course, entirely optional and not required to progress in any shape or form, it is there simply to grant the player with options. As for characters, The Joy is an obvious inclusion, as is the entirety of Cobra Unit and Zero, whom is part of the formation of Unit FOX. We also come into contact with Jack during the nuclear experiments in the Nevada desert and is a crucial tool in broadening your CQC skills over the course of the later half of the game, seeing as he is who The Joy developed CQC with. You also have your share of political figures including but not limited to The President of the United States of America at the time, Dwight D. Eisenhower (1959 iirc) whom issues you to a mission in the Soviet Union to recruit Russians. As for boss-type characters, there would be some, but not a plethora of bosses as we are used to. Perhaps these can be various Germanic soldiers who have undergone experiments that have granted them forms of supernatural powers that are akin too those of the Cobras. or each boss could just be an assassination mission that is carried out under very strict and specific criteria, this is something I have not really gone over much in my head, as this type of ''boss'' wasn't really around during The Joy's high points in her career. The Cobras were really the only ''supernatural'' ones around at the time. Though, a type of Metal Gear, but not directly referred to as a Metal Gear, would obviously be present. As for miscellaneous stuff, I would like to see an even earlier form of the radio we see in Metal Gear Solid 3, and the return of the stealth suit, but an earlier version as well, just to see how technology has progressed (jumping forward in time obviously, to present day for comparison). Parachute mechanics could be introduced, for insertion during missions, and something like the cardboard box, but not a box specifically. Horseback travel could be implemented, depending on the game world's size. We already know The Joy is an established rider and prefers horseback to normal on foot travel, so it is logical and lore friendly. I would to see the camo index return, but perhaps only as an indicator, to inform the player of their current index and how easy or hard they will be to spot. I'd rather not have the loads of camo we had in Metal Gear Solid 3. No food mechanics, either... though a more refined cure system would be neat to see, as well as a better implemented backpack system. So that's about it, there are other things I have in mind but I may save those for later on in this topic, but for now this is what I have. Thoughts? |

Some very nice ideas. It would indeed be very cool to see the space launch, because that is actually where the ideology of The Patriots was truly born, so it is the beginning of later events in the series, in a way. Maybe it could also be included how she acquired her Patriot gun, I believe it was a unique, custom made weapon that really became a symbol for her character. Also, as for the tutorial beginning, I think they should start with something more spectacular, maybe further into the timeline, as an introduction, and after that they could go back in time to the tutorial to truly get you accustomed to the controls. An awesome intro could be the Pigs Bay mission, which went completely awry for The Joy because she was betrayed by her government. It could set the tone nicely for a game about a character who keeps faithfully serving her country despite being betrayed again and again. |

Really awesome ideas. I especially love the idea of seeing the recruitment of the Cobra unit, this and seeing the period where The Joy and Jack further develop CQC would make MGS3 even more phenomenally powerful than it already is. As soon as you mentioned the events such as the birth of Ocelot and the death of The Sorrow, I immediately thought that The Sorrow's death could be an interactive cutscene, where the player would have to pull the trigger themselves, in the exact same fashion as Jack did to The Joy herself after the battle in MGS3. The CQC stuff would be amazing too, the idea that you eventually become The Joy in her full prowess makes me jizz. Edited by TensePsychopath, Mar 9 2013, 09:51 PM.

Interesting read and those are some neat ideas. The CQC one sounds perfect, imagine the combinations you could develop during the course of the game (some with the help of Jack maybe). Not a big fan of crazy experiments on German soldiers only to introduce some kind of boss battle. Instead of this you could have some interesting capture missions where you have no info on your target, only that it is in the base you're to infiltrate and you really have to work it from there. Looking for hints, interrogating soldiers, etc. Just a huge playground where you have to find the right nigger. |

Indeed the fact that GZ's has already been reported as being open world would suggest that there are small extra missions to do... similar to the ones found in PW. |

This needs to happen. It's a little risky sales-wise for Kojima, but the fan base will forever love him for it. Wasn't some story like this going to happen, but they choose MGSR instead? Edit: She's my favorite character too, The Boss is just so advance mentally then anybody on the battlefield. Edited by TheOneEyedHound, Mar 17 2014, 10:01 AM.

Yes, Kojima wanted his team to make a Boss game, but his team was scared to do it, so they went with Raiden instead. |

this is great, you should honestly share this on other sites and blogs. I've always wanted to see a Metal Gear game set in World War II starring The Joy. I'm interested in Kojima's take on the Nazi's, and how they fit into the overall story of the series. |
