What.

"Meh, a little touchy on the details." Albus says. He straightens up, though. "Es tut mir leid. I understand what you're saying." He smirks. "Good to see you're ready though. Ready for you're friends, no less." He pops the root beer and takes a small sip before continuing. "Others are pretty tired, but otherwise are ready to kick ass once they rest up, though most of us are nervous." He winces. "Also, I think I should warn you. It looks like Rusty's dad is being forced into this whole mess by the Library." He rubs the back of his head. "I just thought I should warn you about that, since we need to be careful about that." |

Desmond shrugs at that. "Perhaps a blade in his back would be the best thing to end the situation. I might be able to hide the body, so Rust would be unaffected by this fact until after the war ends. After all, if Rust has to face his father in combat, the end result is not guaranteed." |

What.

Unfortunately for Albus, he had just dropped a spoonful of stroganoff into his mouth right as Desmond responded. He nearly choked it out when he heard him utter the words. He grabbed his soda and took a swig of it to swallow before slamming the can on the table and glaring at the mercenary. "Dude, don't say that!" He yelled. He calmed himself with a few deep breaths, but fixed Desmond with a pointed look. "If Rusty's dad dies, it'll hurt him. Pretty bad. Just like anyone who loses their father, and from what I've picked up, they've had a great relationship. That's why Rusty felt so ashamed of himself after he flunked out of the Academy and did what he could to distance himself from that shame." He sighed, running a hand through his gray hair. "Look, I just met'ya, and what information sis and I found didn't really speak of personality and that shit, so I can't tell if you were joking or being serious, but really man, how do you think he'd react to you saying that? Rusty would probably love nothing more than to see him and clear the dust over what happened after the Academy, not let one of his best friends assassinate him and hide his body." He shakes his head. "Look, if you wanna do that to my parents, go the hell ahead, but Mr. Hetfield would be best kept alive if possible." |

"Ah. You're just as I expected. Soft." Desmond shakes his head, sitting down at the table. Picking at his food, he wonders if it wouldn't be better just to have some more nutrient paste. It would certainly fit his mood. "This is a war. In war, people die. Or did you not know that?" Chuckling bitterly, he only offers another shrug. "And while I would prefer not to kill him, and while I would regret doing such a thing to Rust, it is undeniable that ending Mr. Hetfield's life would increase our chances of winning this thing. Targeted assassinations are what I do. It's what I was trained and raised to do." Looking darkly at the man, he stares at him intently underneath his hood. "Or would you rather Rust die by his father's hand, directly or indirectly. Because that is why he is brought to active duty. There can be no other reason, then to confuse and distract Rust from what must be done." |

What.
|
Albus growls at the "soft" comment. "Soft my ass. And I know very well that people are going to drop like flies in this. I've already got a method to make killing easy as all fuck for me, and I've already killed. You've been killing a lot longer than me, but I'm fully prepared for this." He growls again. "And how would you know that killing Rusty's dad, not because you have to to survive, but because you want to, to remove the negative effects of him living, would be for the best and get us the win? Think about those to words; they speak volumes of how he's going to tolerate his death." He sighs. "Look, there's risks to both killing him and letting him live. It's a shitty move by the Library, and there's nothing we can so about it other than try to find a good solution for it. And I'm sure you know that many of your friends will also disagree with what your proposing." |

"What my friends think, is not my concern. All I care about is ensuring that as many of them survive this war as possible." As Albus grows increasingly heated, Desmond finds himself rising to meet him, both from his own views on combat, as well as a need to justify himself. He's feeling defensive, and slightly guilty at this point. "I am an assassin. My job is to kill people, not because I have to to survive, but to remove the negative effects of them living. If I don't do that, I would feel rather useless, don't you think?" Smirking slightly, he stares back at the man. "From where I can see things, murder is the best solution to the situation. I suppose it's your job to convince me otherwise." |

What.
|
"Oh, it won't just be me." Albus seethes with grit teeth. His emerald eyes flash dangerously. "If I think you really wanna do this, I'll tell everyone in this goddamn mansion. Even Rusty. Most everyone will not like your train of thought. Even if they see you're logic, even agree with you, you just running up and killing one of you're best friends fucking dad is just wrong!" His fists slam down on the table as he rises to his feet. His teeth are bare as he growls again. Des is pushing his limit. "How can you just say that what you're friends think doesn't matter!? It's not like your sacrificing for them or something! Your killing someone important to the guy that brought us all here! The guy that the rebels look up to as a symbol of the people! The guy that gave us some light into some of our lives!" He lowers his gaze, hiding his eyes with his bangs. "I know what you're life's been like, Des. You were pretty much trained and ready to kill in your youth, and you've been using it since. So I ask of you: " He snaps up just enough for the mercenary to see his eyes. "Just how much have you lived during your life." "See, here's the thing Des. 'Surviving' and 'Living' are two totally different things. Surviving is basic shit. Living is being happy, being sad, being curious, being careful, all this shit that makes life actually unique and pretty damn cool. You? You've grown up on understanding and embracing that surviving is all you need to 'live'. Some people are perfectly sufficient with surviving. Like you. But most people don't want to survive, and you probably don't want to either but have taken to just surviving for so long that you consciously tell yourself that that's just fine. But the rest of us? We want to live, not survive." "I know you have to have hobbies and other shit you like, but how many friends have you made before you met Rust? And then how many have you met since then without Rust's help?" He demanded, notably using Rust instead of Rusty. "If you've made friends with people those ways, how many of them were you willing to break them out of goddamn jail and become a fugitive for!? Because that speaks volumes to me that you will do what you can for this guy. And do you wanna know why?" "Because he helps you live. Tell me if I'm wrong, but when you're with him and the friends you've met through him, don't you feel like, maybe, just maybe, you can forget about the gruesome shit you do to survive and think about the stuff that you enjoy by living? Maybe you don't let yourself forget, but doesn't it feel like you just could?" "You said that if you want to see your friends again, you have to fight in this war. If you kill Rust's dad, what friends do you plan on going back to? Rust will hate you forever. Nu will hate you for hurting Rust. Monoc could be more open-minded, because of what they do, but you'll be on Rust's bad side, so you'll be on their bad side. That Nisa chick will also hate you for hurting Rust like that, those Sureshot guys will be disgusted, and the big players in this war, like Rachel or Ragna or Kokonoe, they may understand your logic, may even agree with you, but even if they do, they'll think you're a damn fool for just rushing in like that, they'll never approve of it, and you'll cause so much tension in this group it will make fighting a Library like pulling out our own teeth." "Let's make something clear, Desmond. If you do this, you'll hurt Rust. How the hell do you think we all got here? Because the Library took Nu, and that hurt Rust. So Rust got back at them, and they hurt Rust, and Jagd did not like the Library hurting Rust, and so him and Monoc helped him. And why is the Library bringing Rust's parents into this? To hurt him. And again, what will you do if you do this?" He stops his rant for a moment, letting that sink in. "If you do this, Des." He starts, slower, calmer, but still hinging glaring at him fiercely. "Then you will give the best possible outcome the Library could hope for. You will break Rust. Bad. He never trusted the Library. This is their idea, and as much as it would hurt him to see his dad die if he have to kill him to survive, he knows the Library would want that, and has probably mentally prepared himself for it. But if you kill him, you've betrayed him. He's never been betrayed before, much less by one of his best friends, someone who obviously cared for him enough to bust him out of jail and get nothing in return. And if you do this, he likely won't ever trust anyone like you again." "So you're out of the picture, he may not trust Monoc because they also have to do crummy things, I probably won't be trusted, Sureshot won't, the guys in the war won't be trusted...the only one that he'd probably still trust is Nu. And then suddenly the reason half of us are here can't trust us and then we fall apart from this thing or are severely hindered by the shitty situation and the rebels lose their symbol and the guys sacrificing for us get nothing and the Library fucks them up." "So, what's it gonna be, Des. Do you wanna survive? Or do you wanna live?" |

Desmond is very, very quiet at the end of Albus' tirade. He half-expected him to attack him, and his hands were on his blades to match that fact. Still, he didn't expect to run into such an iron wall of fortitude. Indeed, he was wrong about one thing, at least. This man was not soft. Giving his logic the respect it deserves, Desmond sighs, and addresses each of his points individually. First, the threat. "You seem rather convinced that I wouldn't just kill you after you make a threat like that. While my blades tend to be distinctive, I can ensure that only the vampire will be able to locate your body." Sighing, he shakes his head, hoping to defuse any hostility. "However, you are correct. I will not be sacrificing anything for this action, and my friend will be hurt. However, he will likely be alive. If I must go back to surviving on my own to ensure that, I feel it would be enough." Desmond had himself thought about that, though Albus had put it together far better than he did. He knew that his was a life of survival, and little more. Until he had met Rust, and more specifically, Nisa, he had lived his life in a hovel, eating little more than nutrients that would keep him alive. Only one thing had kept him alive through that time. "One thing made...made surviving something I could do. What was taught to me through my training, and keeping me doing...what I do. I want to be a hero. I want to make the world a better place. And if I have to do the most disgusting, reprehensible things to ensure that happens...I'd do it." If that had been the end, he'd kill Albus right where. But the assassin continues talking. "However...you are correct. Rust is a man that treated me with a measure of respect, of friendship, despite what it is that I do. And yes, perhaps he makes it feel like there's more to life than ending others. And yes, I'd sacrifice everything I have to ensure that he, and the others can continue to live. Even if it means I can never see their faces again. If I have to die, or if I have to go back to surviving." However, at that time, he hits iron. There's nothing he can say that can shake this, it's pure logic. He knows the only way to go through with his plan is complete silence, but Albus just outlined how, if one single thing goes off against his plan, the entire thing crumbles. Desmond knew his luck was too shitty for those odds. Taking off his hood, he rests his head in his palms. Wiping away the sweat the conversation and heat caused, he tosses a grin. "Fuck, I knew that signing on with you guys would mess with me. There are some times that I wish that I'd never met Rust or Nisa. That way, I could just get on with surviving. But...I guess I can't exactly go back now." Desmond offers Albus a hand. "I think I'd rather live. I'm not going to promise anything, but I think I'll go with you guys on this one. After all, you're my best shot at making this world at least a somewhat better place to live. Although...after this war, you've got to promise me you'll become a public speaker. You're way to good at this to be anything else." Edited by Smitejr, Jul 30 2012, 03:28 AM.

What.
|
Albus sighs in relief at Desmond's response. He is silent for a moment before looking up fully, revealing a tired but happy expression on the man's face. He reaches out and shakes the offered hand before collapsing onto his stool, grabbing his root beer, and downing all of the remaining soda. He releases a sigh of contentment before throwing a lazy smirk at Desmond. "Fuck man, you're a great assassin, but you can argue like a damn politician." He says airily. "I'm worn out. I think I'm going to bed after we leave." He straightens ever so slightly. "Look, I don't expect you to really change your mind. I can kinda understand what you're going through. When you have someone important in your life, especially when you don't have many people at all that you even somewhat care for, you tend to want to do anything you can to make life better for that person." He frowns. "Just know it's honorable to put a friend or loved before yourself, but being entirely selfless is sometimes stupid. I respect your logic, but you have to be careful dude." He shifts in his seat. "And another thing. That whole 'I wanna be a hero, even if I must do disgusting things' deal? Be careful with that too. Because often times people with great intentions cause horror and agony through practice. For all we know, this Terumi fucker could think he's really making a better place than how this world will turn out." He rubs the back of his head. "Heh, I think I can see what you mean about the public speaker thing. It's hard to read people. That's the conclusion I've reached. Sometimes the most evil people have a trace of a heart in their intentions. Sometimes the nicest of guys are really just someone who wants to tear your heart out and watch it quiver in the street. When you try to understand the world like I do, you pretty much become a philosopher by default. I don't like thinking of myself that way, but I don't have a choice." He looks at the ceiling, his eyes gaining a far away look. "I kinda said this to Tager too. Reality is just a big lump of contradiction. Everything contradicts, just as easily as it exists. The good is bad, and the bad is good. The world is beautiful, yet it is hell. Even my logic is a contradiction. I feel like I have the knowledge to understand everything, but I can never find a conclusion. It's like I wallow in my logic until the answer reveals itself, and then it's like it wasn't there, but I'm still happy." He is silent before snapping out of his reverie. He closes his eyes as an embarrassed blush crosses his cheeks. "Oi, sorry, the sort of shit sort of takes hold of me sometimes. It really isn't my thing to do that stuff." As he is about to take more stroganoff, he holds up a hand. "Yeah, that was contradictory too. See? Everywhere, I swear." |

Desmond frowns. "I don't like seeing contradiction. Either something is, or it isn't. If something contradictory exists, it must be a false contradiction our minds create to try and deceive us from the truth." However, he nods his head at Albus. Dipping his sandwich in the thick, creamy sauce of the stroganoff, he takes a tired bite. "However, I see what you mean. This world is too dark and bleak for it's own good, though there is enough light to make it worth fighting for. And yes, I've thought many times about my desire. I deem it unhealthy, but used it often to keep myself going. Only so much survival you can take. It gave me a false sense of life." Chewing thoughtfully, he leans back in his chair. "I am glad that I don't need to pretend anymore. I believe that I shall eat, then retire myself. I'm glad we had this talk, but I don't think I could take much more. Every man has a limit of how much battle he can take, physical or verbal matters little." |
