Oligocene Epoch Rupelian age July 8th 12:00 PM Middle of the Atlantic and South American coast Midnight, as the last of the serpent-like mosasaurs cruises through a group of ammonites It calls out for a mate. Just like the basilosaurids in our time, some mosasaurs will be replaced by more fish-shaped mosasaurs just like the ichthyosaurs before them. The water is cooler but the climate is still the same as it was in the Eocene. The serpent-like shape of the mosasaurs will not truly die off as river mosasaurs will take advantage of this shape within their swampy domains. As the snake-like relic swims into the gloom of the sea, a few miles down lights dance while others disappear. Early Ichthyosaur-shaped Mosasaurs attack bioluminescent fish and cephalopods. They click and squeak as they coordinate attacks on their deep sea bait ball. Though less intelligent then their dolphin equals, they are still graceful and smart predators in their own right. High above the sea a pteranodontid glides over looking for a quick night time snack while still being careful that he does not end up as one himself. He catches a encodus relative and flies off toward South America. When he gets there he is greeted by others of his kind along with a few predatory Thalassodromids at the edge of the pterosaur colony harassing mothers for their hatchlings. Further down the beach we see a few creatures about the size of a large house cat playing in the shallows while others bask in the moonlight. These are not dinosaurs, in actuality they don't belong to anything that has ruled the earth before, a mammal. A early lutratherid mammal. One day these furry creatures will be as big as crocodiles and be the top predators where top predators of this world could not reach but for now they are cute cat-sized predators of small fish.
