Are we in the near future going to see an "age gap" of Ch show judges in our chosen breeds, purely due to the fact that they are trying to achieve a criteria set decades ago when to get the required "hands on numbers" was a fair bit more realistic?.

What needs to be changed whilst trying to maintain an achievable standard of qualification, ie class No's, hands on dog No's, club shows etc?

As a mere mortal trying to gain my numbers within Staffords I am finding it increasingly difficult due to the falling numbers at the Open and Club shows. It seems people would rather save their money and go to the Champ shows. I think the hands on critieria should be dropped slightly, to enable new up and coming judges to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Speaking for myself I have been in my chosen breed for 11 years and passed all the relevant KC exams, 6 Stud Book No's and judged up and down the country the last 4 years and I have worked it out I will not under the current trend be able to be passed for CC's until I'm nearly 60!! So definately numbers should be dropped or at least looked at as things have changed a lot on the show scene since the critieria for Staffords was set.

Of, course it's up to each breed club to set the criteria. I thought it was a good idea for breed clubs to hold limited shows as well. These count as open show classes for judges.

I agree to a certain extent Lorraine but, in a breed with 18 breed clubs they (nearly all anyhow) all set a different criteria, what good is that?

What about joint judging / apprentice judging? To get numbers a c/b list judge could perhaps accompany the main judge in the ring, go over the dogs separately, discuss their thoughts / decisions before the main judge makes the placements (similar to one CC). These could then count towards numbers but the main judges decision would be final.

Do you not have a Breed Council who could set the criteria for all clubs.
