Earthbound was a bizarre SNES game, known as Mother II in Japan, in which you play a boy out to save the universe as with all Japanese RPGs. The climax to this game, is you would get to fight Giygas, who appears as an eldritch abomination. This is a two-part oddity, so two posts: Firstly, Giygas himself. A swirling mass of colours, it doesn't really look like anything other than a distorted scream if you look carefully... however, if you look in the space between shapes (like the 2-men/vase illusion), you will clearly see that it makes the shape of a foetus. Add that to the fact he's constantly saying creepy things, quoted here:
and the creator of Earthbound has admitted that he was inspired from when he was a kid and accidentally walked into a porno that involved rape, and you'll see why a whole generation was traumatised by this game. Here's a video showing the Giygas-foetus: |

...and the next story, is concerning the anti-piracy protection on Earthbound. Because piracy was already a big issue on the SNES, companies were often trying to find ways to discourage pirates, but none did it as expertly as Earthbound. Everything would seem normal, although they made random encounters much more difficult and more frequent but that's relatively normal for anti-piracy (they've done similar with Pokemon before), but the main thing to screw you over is right at the end of the game. You've made it all the way to the fight with Giygas, who is creepy enough. I also forgot to mention his only attack is to 'attack with a power you cannot comprehend!', which is semi-important. As you enter the final battle... the game freezes, apart from the swirling form of Giygas. You reset, thinking it's just a glitch, and your save file's been wiped! So yeah, Giygas really does attack with a power you can't comprehend... Spoiler: click to toggle
