Ellen and Portia Buy Brody House — Next to Playboy Mansion http://www.zillow.com/blog/2014-01-15/ellen-and-portia-buy-brody-house/ DATE:JANUARY 15, 2014 | CATEGORY:CELEBRITY REAL ESTATE | AUTHOR:LAURA VECSEY Ellen and Portia’s home is located at the A marker above and ir right next to the Playboy Mansion. And the winner is … Ellen DeGeneres! The well-liked entertainer and host of this year’s Academy Awards ceremony show has apparently spent some of her handsome fees on one of the most prized homes in all of Los Angeles. Posted Image Source: IMDb According to the Los Angeles Times, DeGeneres has made off with Brody House, a classic modern residence in that has long drawn the “oohs” and “ahs” from art, architecture and real estate aficionados. The lover of trophy real estate and well-known high-end house flipper paid $39,888,000 for the splendidly remodeled home. The home, in the coveted real estate neighborhood of Holmby Hills (Westwood), was said to be acquired in an off-market deal, which puts DeGeneres and her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, in an exquisite new abode right next door to the Playboy Mansion. While the home was not officially listed for sale, Brody House was sold in 2010 to a mystery buyer for $14.8 million and then refurbished. Private previews took place back in Oct. 2013, when the Los Angeles Conservancy held a benefit at the exclusive address. Brody House was commissioned in 1949 by art aficionado Frances Lasker Brody, who had architect A. Quincy Jones, interior designer Billy Haines and landscape architect Garrett Eckbo design the masterpiece in 1951. It has stood as the pinnacle of modernism even in a sprawling city studded with modern homes. The home is set on 2.3 acres in Holmby Hills and has been called “an essay of modernist glamour. “ The home is flooded with light thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass windows that integrate interior and exterior spaces. There’s a living room with library area, pristine kitchen and formal dining room. The entire second floor is made up of a master suite with family room, study, terraces, plus twin dressing rooms. There are 3 additional bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, plus 4 rooms for staff. A 1-bedroom guesthouse can be found on the garden grounds, which also features a large motor court, swimming pool and lighted tennis court. DeGeneres and de Rossi recently bought a $26.5 million spread in Montecito. The couple have also bought and sold homes in Thousand Oaks and Malibu (Brad Pitt’s “old” modern.) In 2012, they sold their Hollywood Hills estate to Ryan Seacrest for $49 million. Edited by Teresa, Jan 20 2014, 09:17 AM.

My favorite Real Estate Stalker has a picture. The last paragraph has a link to some pictures. http://realestalker.blogspot.com/2014/01/ellen-degeneres-buys-bigagain.html http://la.curbed.com/archives/2013/10/the_best_house_in_los_angeles_is_about_to_be_flipped.php Sorry T! I know they asked you but I immediately go to Real Estalker when it comes to Celebrity houses. That's where I found the funny article about the bunny house. Edited by Teresa, Jan 20 2014, 09:18 AM.

Annon posted this in the comments lol : Anonymous said... Terrible location. Now granted, from recent pictures it would appear that Hef is not at the height of vitality, but he's not dead yet. Presumably when he does die the company or his estate (not sure how the ownership of that place is structured) will sell it off. And presumably it will revert to a private home at that point. Btw, does anyone know how these parties at the mansion are handled? Where do all these people park? Are they allowed to have music blaring? Do they have to shut everything down by a certain time? Actually can't believe any of this is allowed to go on in that neighborhood -- that the property owners around there haven't been able to shut it down. |

OK, if you go to the batch of photos of the house, the 9th and 10th ones down so a walkway, appears to be between the main house and another building or section. I LOVE the plantings! I'm not a Cali girl so I may be a bit unfamiliar but the palm trees with the bulbous bottoms, SO cute! And I love the stepping stones and the rest of the area...my favorite part of the house! |

They have the majority of guests park at a parking garage near by and then they shuttle people in on buses. If you are famous enough or whatever they will let you park at the mansion, but they have very few spaces and will just parallel park cars on the road in back of the property. A few people also get dropped off in limos and the limo will leave the property and return when they are called on. I don't think Hef has a ton of neighbors that would be bothered and I know many of them attend his events. I met some old guy who is ALWAYS at the mansion. He told me that he was one of Hef's neighbors, had been attending the parties for 40+ years, and he's the REAL player of the PB mansion (lol). Anyway he was telling me that getting invites is Hef's way of keeping him from calling the cops for noise disturbance. Honestly the noise is really centered to the back yard. If you are standing in the front of the house you barely hear the music so its not likely that a house kinda far away will be bothered. |

While I love the design of the house, I don't like all the colors. Mainly the black and white. I like the warmer neutral tones. Other than that it is swoonworthy |

Those pics are from before the renovation...2010, I think. I think the furnishings look uncomfortable. There are no current interior pics. |
